  1. My copy just came in the mail-- woo, looking forward to it. I'm hoping it will work well with the youtube lectures from Harvey Mudd.
  2. I had Abbott's Understanding Analysis recommended to me. Has anyone used it?
  3. Interesting... maybe I missed the call? In any case, I was offered some level of support at the MS programs at Oregon State and Purdue, as well as PhDs at Boulder econ and MSU AFRE. Can you put into words exactly what you didn't like about Oregon? If it was something specific to the visit, like they seemed too busy for you that one day, then I wouldn't too much weight on it. If it seemed like something that would affect you as a student there, then do take that into consideration. I wanted to add that we seem to have done the exact same thing this year-- applied to MS programs and ended up choosing between those and a PhD acceptance-- and your reasons for considering the MS are pretty much the same as mine as well, though I have always been more sure that I would reapply for PhD programs. Something you should think about is exactly how elite you're aiming for, and whether your MS will give you the boost you need to get into those. If I remember correctly from browsing websites, there's a student at UCSB with a Colorado State MS, but I'd ask around to see if that is a regular occurrence.
  4. When did you hear from Colorado State? They still haven't gotten back to me--not that I'd consider going at this point, but I was under the impression they were being really disorganized this year, which might indicate it's not the best place to go right now. As for drawbacks to leaving with an MS, I have no experience with these things, but I would guess that a main one would be potentially harming relations with professors who vouched for you.
  5. The biggest group of students, by far, are interested in development, and I think their website reflects that pretty accurately: see all their projects involving cowpea production in Africa, etc. MSU itself I think started out as an agricultural school, and much of the research that takes place there has an agricultural focus. I talked mostly to professors who do more environmental. Many of them have an interest in bioenergy and production of bioenergy crops in the region. Does that help any? What fields are you interested in?
  6. Hey, I think someone on here wanted to know about MSU. I recently visited-- feel free to PM me with specific questions, but my overall impression of the department was very good.

  9. Congratulations! I second Wolf-- just send them an honest email. I think that's the way they work at MSU; I didn't hear anything about funding until they could tell me exactly what I would be working on. Are you going to visit?
  10. All good information. Thanks everyone!
  11. Thanks bioecon! I have two PhD admits. And yes, if I were funded I would consider Davis (I, personally, think an MS would be beneficial to me, and it's nice to have options). Guess I'll be sending them an email sometime soon.

  13. Just got into Davis' MS! But there's no mention of funding in the letter. Does that mean they've decided not to give me anything, or could I possible hear something at a later date?

  15. Yes, I will visit and let you know what I think. I got my decision a little early, so I had to wait a while to hear about funding. I think professors will contact you about open RA positions-- couldn't hurt to send someone an email and ask for details on when you'll get word, though. Fingers crossed for you!
