  1. Hello Your credentials look very impressive. My sincere suggestion is that you can aim for the best schools of your choice. Definitely your research exp. counts a ton. (I am not a person who give suggestions with out facing them, I got admitted in to pretty good school though my gre score is awkward because I have exp. in research. I got the opportunity to talk with them and explain them how much I am interested in their program. Regarding TOEFL, its not so much to worry when you are preparing for GRE and if you are in US. I think you should not loose any of your choice just because you don't want to give TOEFL. Good Luck!!

  4. Hello Friends I have a doubt about the Sop. I read some sample essays in the admission essays and I understood that Sop should concentrate mainly on why you want to do Ph.D,what motivated you towards research, what is your research interest for graduate program etc. But I have seen my friends(2 of them, already in the graduate school) Sops' and they are mainly concentrated on what projects they did, what awards they achieved etc. What is the better approach. Please help me out in this matter,I have to complete writing the SOP by this week end. (I am applying for Ph.D in Pharmacology.) Thank you in advance Bujji
  5. Hello friends I was really down since I gave the exam yesterday. I was really really tensed once the verbal started. I could not focus my self and my eyes are blinking. Once I saw the time when I was in my 12-13 qestion, I had only 9 minutes to go. Thats it. I didn't read any passags, I know what the passages,my favorite, astronomy is one of them.I didn't even expect that only because of the tension, I will ruin the exam. Verbal 550 Maths 620 4 months of 3 people's effort(me, my little one and my hubby) is fruitless. All the time I concentrated on verbal and ignored the maths section(My major is not maths) I realised that my prep for maths is bad when I took PP2 3 weeks before, I scored 600 at that time. So for the rest of my prep. I started focusing on maths and in the meanwhile I lost the grip on verbal.I know this happened because of the lack of proper plan in the prep. But I could not do any better than this. With a little toddler to take care,I was always tired by the time I start studying. Somehow I focused on the studies, but I am really down as my hard work didn't pay off. I know the only option I have is to retake it. But I am not brave enough to that now. I think I have to improve in maths big time. I don't know how! Anyhow friends, Thank you very much for all your support and my only request for all of you is that all of you should be co-operative and friendly to each other always, just like this , where ever you go. Good luck to all my dear friends:tup: Bujji

Hello friends Can someone provide me with solutions to these questions !! In a box of ten electrical parts,2 are defective 1. if the two parts are randomly chosenfrom the box, without replacement, what is the probability that both are defective(Ans 1/45) I thought that the first chance is 1/10 and second chance is 1/9so the total is sum of the 2 chances.??? 2.P(A or B)=0.6, P(A)=0.2 Find P(B) given that the events A and B are independent As it is said that they are independent,P(Aand B) is 0, P(AorB)=P(A)+P(B)-P(AandB) 0.6=0.2+P(B)-0 P(B)=0.6-0.2 =0.4 The answer is 0.5 Please correct me where I am wrong Can someone provide me with the details of standard playing cards, like how many hearts, how many jokers....(Sorry friends,I really don't have idea about them, please don't laugh at me.Even my hubby-Ph.D doctorate don't know exactly.May be thats why everyone says we are made for each other as we are equally dumb:D Thank you so much friends Bujji

  11. The following appeared in a memo from a budget planner for the City of Grandview. "To avoid a budget deficit next year, the City of Grandview must eliminate its funding for the Grandview Symphony. Our citizens are well aware of the fact that while the Grandview Symphony Orchestra was struggling to succeed, our city government promised annual funding to help support its programs. Last year, however, private contributions to the Symphony increased by 200 percent, and attendance at the Symphony's concerts-in-the-park series doubled. The Symphony has also announced an increase in ticket prices for next year. Such developments indicate that the Symphony can now succeed without funding from city government and we can eliminate that expense from next year's budget. This action will surely prevent a budget deficit." In the presented memo from the budget planner, the speaker provides the alternative to prevent the budget deficit for the city of Grandview. He stresses on the withdrawal of the support to Grandview Symphony as the main alternative to prevent budget deficit next year. This may be one of the remedies to prevent the budget deficit but the speaker failed to consider some of the very important points which has more vital influence on the budget. Firstly, the speaker emphasizes that the support of the Government should be withdrawn to the Grandview Symphony. He did not provide any statistical data about the percentage of the budget the Govt .is providing to this Symphony. Is the share provided to this Symphony too high or is the percentage of the total budget provided for this symphony too minor? The data involving this information will make the claim to some extent. Secondly, It is clearly mentioned in the memo that Grandview Symphony Orchestra was struggling to succeed in the last year. It is the Government’s responsibily to prevent the arts from extinction and the Government of Grandview is doing the same. The budget of the city should give fair importance to all the issues in the city of which the support to arts is one among them. Thirdly, The speaker supports his statement by further stating that the private contributions, no. of attendents and the ticket price are increased and so the Grandview Symphony Orchestra must be able to meet its own financial demands. But he failed to include the data including the details of the rise in the income in solid figures. The percentage increase of 200 percent is able to compare the details with the previous year but cannot give the exact idea if the amount is well enough to self support itself. Fourthly, there are many other factors that affect the budget of a city like the percapita income of the people, the income of the Govt. agencies, employment status of the people, technological development etc. In conclusion, I would like to state that the memo can be more convincing by looking into all possible reasons instead of stressing on a single issue which is not logically convincing.
  12. The following report appeared in an archaeology journal. "The discovery of distinctively shaped ceramic pots at various prehistoric sites scattered over a wide area has led archaeologists to ask how the pots were spread. Some believe the pot makers migrated to the various sites and carried the pots along with them; others believe the pots were spread by trade and their makers remained in one place. Now, analysis of the bones of prehistoric human skeletons can settle the debate: high levels of a certain metallic element contained in various foods are strongly associated with people who migrated to a new place after childhood. Many of the bones found near the pots at a few sites showed high levels of the metallic element. Therefore, it must be that the pots were spread by migration, not trade." The report appeared in the archaeology journal was supposed to clarify the doubt regarding the ways how the pots are widely scattered. Though the report is capable of providing support for one of the two possible beliefs, the points that supported the conclusion are not convincing. Firstly, it was said that high levels of a certain element contained in various foods are associated with people who migrated to a new place after childhood. No data is provided to support this conclusion. On what basis did the archaeologists come to the conclusion that the bones found near the pots belong to the pot makers? It cannot be generalized that all the migrants moved in their childhood are pot makers with out proper supporting evidence. Secondly, if we can accept the assumption that all the migrants are pot makers, the bones found near all the pots must contain the metallic element. But the report clearly states that only very few places have many bones of this kind. It might be possible that this high amount of the metallic element is the result of the industrial contamination or any explosives, which had killed massive amounts of the people in that certain area. This cannot be generalized to all the places. Thirdly, not all the people possessing the pots are pot makers. How can the archaeologists’ come to the conclusion that the bones present near the pots belong to the pot makers and not to the people using them? In conclusion I would like to say that the reasons provided in the report to support their view of the spread of pots is not convincing. The report has to provide more evidences and data to support it and the archaeologists’ must do more research before coming to any conclusion regarding this issue. Suggestions please !!!

  16. This is one of the very few essays I could practice before my exam. Any suggestions in improving my essay writing style will be very helpful.Thank you "Many of the world's lesser-known languages are being lost as fewer and fewer people speak them. The governments of countries in which these languages are spoken should act to prevent such languages from becoming extinct." The speaker asserts that many of the worlds lesser known languages are being lost and the Government of countries should act to prevent such languages from becoming extinct. The statement has two claims. The first one is the realization that the prevention of languages from extinction is necessary and the second is that Govt. has to act to prevent such extinction. While I agree with the first claim, I disagree with the second claim. Firstly to start with ,Language is regarded as the chief means of communication and this capacity of human beings along with his intellectual ability make him an advanced living being. The language has developed and has been developing by its usage by the people. If the majority of people do not use it, it cannot survive anymore. The main basis for any language to be alive and to be known to everyone is to be in usage by many people. So it is always in the hands of the people to keep a language alive or to make it extinct. Secondly, I cannot agree with the speaker saying that the support by Government alone will stop a language from extinction. Government may encourage people to use a particular language but it cannot force the public to do so. Mainly in Democracy one of the important rights that a citizen can enjoy is the freedom of speech. So in democratic countries the Govt. cannot impose any such rules in favor of a particular language. More than that the Government has many crucial problems to concentrate and which need immediate attention. By turning back to the point mentioned in above passage, it is not my intention to say that restoring a country’s culture, heritage and language is not at all the responsibility of the Govt. On the other hand people has to play a major role in doing so. People should realize that they should restore their identity in this world based on their very own language, culture and heritage. There is no scope for the Govt. in succeeding its actions if the Public is unwilling to respond positively. Admittedly, in this modern era, where globalization has caused the world to become so closer, the dominance of a particular language is inevitable. It is very important that there should be a particular language that can be understood by everyone and used by everyone effectively to express themselves. But it does not mean that one has to forget his or her own language. The parents should make their children understand the importance of preserving their mother tongue and encourage them to learn it and pass it through the generations. In sum, I strongly admit that there is a need to preserve the languages from extinction and people and Govt. should work together in reaching this goal.
  17. Thank you for your critics,I will try to rectify them.
  18. “BOTH THE DEVELOPMENT OF TECHNOLOGICAL TOOLS AND USES TO WHICH HUMANITY HAS PUT THEM HAVE CREATED MODERN CIVILIZATIONS IN WHICH LONELINESS IS EVER INCREASING.” During the last few decades technology has improved by leaps and bounds. Though it has improved the lifestyle of humans significantly, I think that the technological development has a belittling effect on the social lives of the people. ‘Necessity is the mother of invention’. It is this necessity and the natural enthusiasm of human beings, which lead to plethora of inventions from the fire to the microchip. It cannot be denied that technology has refined the quality of life. Life has become much easier with sophisticated equipment. The transportation facilities are improved and a person can travel from place to place with not much difficulty. Communication facilities improved and the news can be reached to every nook and corner of the world. The Internet facilities made the world to be united as a spider’s web. The machines made the people’s work easier and the physical stress on the person has reduced. These are the bright side of the technological development. But all this development made people to be so independent of each other. The important consequence of tech.development is that it promotes the economic inequality. Rich people are becoming richer and richer. The fear that others will capture the idea of his business secret makes a businessperson to avoid the crowds and eventually he starts leading a hermit life. Actually it is only through the discussion and interaction with others, can a person develop new ideas for the great innovations. But the feelings of jealousy and selfishness became so dominated that people never like to share their ideas to others with a fear of plagiarism. The other side effect is too much of TV, music, cinema and Internet. The person gets temporary happiness and comfort from these sources and could not realize the value of true friends. The impact of TV can be directly seen on the kids. Kids of these days prefer to play and talk with the dummy TV characters and robots that are lifeless but cannot express themselves to their friends and have trouble in sharing and playing together. In conclusion it can be inferred that too much of anything is dangerous. People could not realize how important it is to work together. People are forgetting that humans are social beings and help and co-operation among each other are very essential for their survival. If this continues and people prefer to lead the reclusive life, human beings cannot be called as social beings any more. Then the technological development is not so blissful anymore. Can some one review my essay too... Thank you friends !
