  1. \ I totally disagree. It looks like from your profile that you haven't taken any econ, or barely any. Therefore most places wouldn't accept you for their phd, or even masters. I was rejected from Davis for my masters because I did not have enough econ courses, but was a "top applicant" after my MS with an RA position. I bet after you finish you will have a strong shot to get into all of the ag/econ departments. That is, if you do well. And yes, totally take Real Analysis, although since you have already taken proofs based maths it's less of a big deal. PS I think that Maryland is more on the level with Davis and Wisconsin. I think that those three are pretty much equal, though it obviously depends on what you are interested in.
  2. PROFILE: Type of Undergrad: BA Mathematics at a top 30 liberal arts school Undergrad GPA: 3.76/3.9 Math Type of Grad MS at top 7(?) agecon department Grad GPA: 3.8 GRE: 170V/166Q/4.5AWA Math Courses: Calc (A,A,A-); LA (A); Proofs (A-); Advanced LA (A); Abstract Algebra (A); PDE (A); Topology (B+); Probability (BC oops); RA (A); Thesis (A) Econ Courses (undergrad-level): Some silly ones for non-majors, Intermediate Micro/Macro (A,A); Agricultural Development in Africa (A) Econ Courses (grad-level): Masters: Applied Micro (A); Applied Econometrics II (I, but will have a grade by application time); Urban Economics (AB, Bschool) PhD: Econometrics I/II (AB, A); Micro Theory I (In progress); Environmental Economics (In progress) Other Courses: Art and liberal arts, Sea Semester out of Woods Hole. Letters of Recommendation: One professor I have been RAing for, phd ucsb should be very positive.. One professor who I don't know well but is in my department, editor of a good journal in my field. One professor I took phd econometrics with, well known econometrician. Research Experience: UG math thesis. RA for two years in masters program. Masters thesis. (Both on air pollution distributions and market based air pollution controls) I got a grant to do a summer project in agricultural marketing. Teaching Experience: None Research Interests: Environment. Spatial econometrics. SOP: Good. Concerns: A few bad grades. I think the BC in probability theory as an undergrad should be drowned out by the A/ABs in phd metrics. Nobody needs topology do they? Also, I don't think my letters (with one exception) will be amazing. Applying to: Reaches (for fun?): Stanford, Columbia. Others, also reaches?: Berkeley ARE, Yale Forestry, Duke, Davis, UCSB, Maryland AREC. RESULTS: Acceptances: UCSB($$$), UC Davis ARE ($), UC Berkeley ARE ($), UCSD ($$), Duke Econ ($$), Duke UPEP ($$$), Maryland AREC ($$) Waitlists: Rejections: Columbia, Stanford, Yale FES Attending: I have some tough decisions to make Comments: My results were stellar, I'm very lucky. What would you have done differently? I certainly applied to too many schools, making my decision making period very difficult. I think I undersold myself a little bit, and should probably not have applied to the lower ranked applied programs.

  4. I haven't been there, so this is just hearsay. I just meant that it is a small town and there isn't much in Davis besides the college in terms of urban public goods. I know Sacramento and the bay are pretty close though.
  5. Note: Bias because I am finishing my MS at UWAAE and I love the department. But I certainly don't think Davis dominates Wisconsin, I know people here chose Wisconsin over Davis, and many there make the opposite decision. I think it would depend on who you want to work with. I don't do development, but people are excited by the faculty here. It's a big focus of the department. In terms of location, things are complicated too. The weather in Davis is certainly better, but Madison is actually a great small city with a lot of stuff going on, while I hear that Davis is a little lacking in culture. It really depends what is most important to you.
  6. Update: I just talked to someone at Berkeley ARE, and they do not fund fly outs or have official visiting days.
  7. I was offered a fly out from Davis, so I assume that Berkeley would pay for fly outs as well, but I haven't heard anything yet. If a program pays for fly outs they would certainly pay from the east coast. In a related note, I heard Duke UPEP paid for a fly out from Singapore a couple of years ago.
  8. I also got in with a graduate student researcher position. It seems they are sending out admittances in clumps by advisor. Though judging from previous years all rejections are sent out on the same day in March.

  11. So I think that the stipend is the department fellowship plus the summer research fellowship and the department pays the segregated fees?
  12. Institution: Duke Program: PhD in Economics Decision: Accepted Funding: First year fellowship Notification date: 02/20/14 Notified through: Email to check website. Posted on GC: No. Comments: I had an interview on 2/18/2014.
  13. When I interviewed with duke they said they would send out results yesterday or today. G2g refresh my email for the hundredth time today.
  14. Anyone heard anything from Berkeley yet?
  15. I don't think it was about English proficiency, at least in my case as I am American. I think that the interview is a screening mechanism to see how serious people are about Duke. I know some applicants apply to the entire top 20 ranked schools and will go to the school they get in that is ranked the highest. My guess is that the interviews try to weed these people out to leave only those who have specific reasons for being interested in Duke. But I guess we'll see when the results come out how accurate that guess is. I bet they had a really low enrollment rate for a while.
  16. The interview went well. It was about 15 minutes and I spoke to two professors from the department. They asked me "Why Duke?", what my main research interests are, and some questions some questions specific to my background. Then they had me ask them some questions about the department. It is unclear to me how related the interviews and the acceptances are. Do they offer admission without interviews? What percentage of those interviewed do they offer admission to? Good luck for anyone else who has an interview!
  17. I had an interview with Duke Econ today, they said they will send out results tomorrow or the next day.
  18. I am biased, but I would go for Wisconsin, which I consider more prestigious. There are a lot of students and faculty studying development in AAE. The department has quite a friendly atmosphere, although I cannot compare it to Cornell. Wisconsin also has students who come for their PhD after a Masters at Cornell AEM, which is a signal that Wisconsin is preferable. However, I really agree with Icculus. The decision you will make will have to be based off some visits this spring. Good luck!
  19. I got an interview request. From scanning last year's thread not all interview requests are sent out on the same day.
  20. From what I know, they tell everyone who doesn't get a university fellowship that there's no funding at this time, and then funding details are passed out later. I think you should read that message as "funding pending..." as other schools would put it. As far as I know all PhD students are fully funded, although perhaps those who didn't receive funding chose not to attend. So in terms of chances of funding I think you should be hopeful, because I assume they haven't made any RA and TA decisions yet. EDIT: Also, congratulations!

  22. hey everyone. I am sorry if I made people angry with my comments earlier in the thread. (I even received a PM that said merely "retard"). I have strong feelings about sexism in economics that I feel are brushed under the rug and I had a perhaps overzealous response. I am sorry to imply that anyone was a bigot. I don't believe in not allowing people to say whatever they want about whomever they want. I just believe that most situations can allow individuals to call out someone making a remark they find offensive. I have many more opinions about this and if we were at a bar I would certainly share them, but I think I'm taking a break from talking about feminism on the internet for a while.
  23. Supporting so called "political correctness" and calling out people who add to culture's systematic inequalities are different. In retrospect, I will grant that I read Catguy's hypothesis of why some comments were made on EMJR I jumped to the conclusion that he was making excuses for them. Maybe he was, maybe he wasn't. And, yankeefan, as for this idea that the culture of overly policing political correctness is the cause of the behavior on EMJR, I would certainly disagree. These attitudes towards minorities and women existed long before the current political correct culture. What I was trying to illustrate in my last post is that these attitudes about women are extant in the real world, and in the workplace. It is the existence of these views that caused the drive for political correctness, not the other way around. I'm sorry you feel so persecuted for your political incorrectness, it's hard to be a poor downtrodden man. PI is a great term, by the way, because it makes it sound so much more innocuous than being a bigot. Additionally, I always find it interesting when a bunch of men say that we should stop being politically correct. (assuming you guys are male) Anonymity, y'all. Allowing us to say whatever we damn well please.
  24. With the fear of getting us off topic, I find this comment pretty offensive. The idea that these highly educated men need a place to vent and therefore it is alright to say rude things about the females in their field is preposterous. The fact is that although sexism is on the decline it is still a fact of life in economics. Just last night I had a conversation with a male friend in my masters program who described his surprise that all the women had passed a specific class while several men had failed. He said it was more evidence that women can do math. When I responded defensively, shocked that he needed evidence for that, he said that I had low self-esteem and needed to stop being so defensive. I hope gender parity will be achieved in economics. I hope that women will not have to scream louder then men to get their voices heard. Women will continue to work on this, but all men need to do their part as well. And part of that is not making excuses for misogynistic a***holes on the internet.
