  1. Governments should focus on solving the immediate problems of today rather than on trying to solve the anticipated problems of the future. While solving day-to-day problems is a main priority for any government, planning for the foreseen problems of the future is not neglected altogether. What would become if one doesn’t anticipate a threat from a neighboring country, or for instance ignore global warming and pollution altogether? Clearly, a government cannot just center all its resources on solving problems of the present. One of the main problems facing most nations is traffic congestion. In countries especially like China and India, measures have to be taken anticipating the burgeoning population levels. The government has to decide on a course of plan – improving metro routes, increasing the reach of public transport systems, improving road transportation by widening or building flyovers – to reduce traffic based on the city’s future needs. If steps aren’t placed now, the problem could just deteriorate and become a nightmare for its citizens. Just as solving internal issues like traffic congestion and rising population have to be on focus, tackling external threats from neighboring countries and terrorist organizations should be on the lime light. The growing number of attacks in recent past has exposed the unpreparedness of many nations towards public safety. The U.S. government had no solution when several planes were hijacked and used as virtual missiles in the 9/11 attacks. Taking steps to prevent such events has now become a main agenda indicating the inclination of governments to not only care about current issues, but also prepare for similar such threats. Yet, one must also be aware of the current course of events. Preparing for the future needs a plethora of resources to be allocated and used, which cuts down the emergency stock saved for times of emergency. Any natural calamity requires aid and support; there could be a shortage of funds and resources if the government -- especially in poorer economies -- had diverted the supplies in vision of planning ahead. At these times of fatal emergencies, it may hold true to focus on the present situation rather than to profligate resources towards the avoidance of yet-to-occur events. While it is extremely important to monitor the current state of affairs, a government must also be aware that a nations overall development and safety depends on how it presages the unseen problems and puts forth steps to mitigate them. Thus, successful governance is one which simultaneously grapples with the issues of both the present and the future and hence takes its country to safety and prosperity.
