  1. My cohort is 2. It was supposed to be 3, but that person decided to go back to public accounting before he enrolled. I echo what Radcliff said. Your fellow cohort members can help you slog through...we are doing some things to potentially help each other with preparing for comps later on. Also, seminar classes are a lot more interesting when it's more than just you and the professor. I'm archival tax, and my cohort is behavioral financial, so we're not going to be competing against other at all.
  2. My PhD will be in accounting, and I plan to do archival tax research mostly. I'm at the University of Nebraska.
  3. I am 46 (and I turn 47 in 2 weeks), and I am starting my Ph.D. program in 2 weeks as well (on my birthday, actually). I did not have public accounting experience, but had over 10 years experience as a small business accountant, plus I had experience on the board of directors of a 15,000 member nonprofit. I also got my masters degree in my early 40s. I applied at 13 schools, got 2 interviews and 1 acceptance, and I am very happy with the school I got accepted at. I had a 720 GMAT (48Q, 41V). The head of our program is well respected in research circles, and he seemed to think he could get me placed at a good program after graduation, although he did say it would be more difficult. So, I haven't actually finished (or started) yet, but I am excited to get started and I think my prospects of getting placed well are good.
  4. Football is king here. Big 10 country.....basketball, however, is hit and miss.
  5. I second what YaS said. I have a bit of a nontraditional profile as well, and I applied more broadly, but my profile is a bit different than yours in that I have the accounting degrees (and an econ BS as well), but I'm likely quite a bit older than you. Also, I'm interested in tax research, so that narrowed down my list quite a bit, but I still applied to 13 schools, and only got accepted by one. That one is an up and coming program with an established star researcher, so I'm really happy about where I ended up, but I didn't end up have any other options. Apply as broadly as you can to places you feel might be a good fit for you. Definitely check out the BYU rankings. I agree that you should add Texas A&M, but I would also add Georgia, especially if you are set on warmer weather. You might also add Arizona State, Houston and UT-Dallas to the list.
  6. Same here. I was similarly 0-3 in my schools making the tourney. One did make the NIT, however, and promptly lost in the first round.
  7. I am not an expert here by any means, but I think such a reply would help to indicate to the professor your high interest in that school's program. I would think that if your family is happy, then the probability is higher that you will be an interested and productive student. That's my uninformed opinion, perhaps someone else has a different take.
  8. I don't think FSU has made offers yet. .....I just got a basic informational email from them today.....neither a rejection nor acceptance. Also, I thought their deadline was February 1, but I could be remembering that incorrectly
  9. I'm not saying don't apply there.....they have some good researchers and it's a good program. Harvard it isn't, though. With the turmoil, you should really investigate the program and ask a lot of questions, should you apply there again.
  10. The UMKC Entrepreneurship program is actually a pretty good one, but they have been accused of inflating their ratings and unduly influencing Princeton Review, among others. Princeton had them as the #1 program in entrepreneurial research, even over Stanford and Harvard. Here is a link to an article: UMKC’s misleading march to the top | The Kansas City Star The Kansas City Star Their director of the program just resigned as well: UMKC entrepreneurship professor resigns - Kansas City Business Journal The program is in a bit of turmoil, so I'm guessing this may be why there are no admits, but that is pure conjecture on my part.
  11. I agree with Endrist. This affects the rest of your life, especially the next 4-5 years. Make sure you gather all of the information and make the best choice you can. You should only eliminate a flyout if you are 100% sure that you are not going to accept that corresponding offer.
  12. Institution Name: University of Nebraska Concentration: Accounting Date of Notification: February 13th Type of Notification: Email Notification: Skype Interview Posted on GradCafe?: Yes Comments: Excited!
  13. Just the one interview here, and I've heard nothing from anyone else. No news is not bad news.
  14. I might talk to a realtor about it. The main issue would be selling the house after your doctorate is complete. You would likely save money over the 4 year span, but there is risk if the market tanks again like 2008 and you have to take a loss
  15. Tax. I expect I will interview with McGill and Asare at least.
