  1. Does anybody has them? Listening is one of weakest areas and need to practice a lot. I think some websites in China used to have them some years ago but the links are not working anymore. I do not mind listening to tests 10 years or more old, I just need to practice real test questions. And it would be even better if transcripts were available but if not, it is still good if I you can send links to files I can play in my laptop (MP3 or otherwise). Thanks a lot and good luck in your preparation!
  2. My verbal score seems suspicious given that I was certain I was answering most of the questions correctly. The words that I had to choose from were familiar (from my word list) except for 2 questions and was always able to narrow the choices down to two possible answers and then further analyzed the nuances between the terms. Same for the reading sections, those passages are easier than the ones in he TOEFL! I know I cannot do anything about it but still, I feel frustrated with my verbal score (glad I got that math score though). AWA went okay-ish as far as I know and do not know if that counts for much in the admission process anyways. It crossed my mind to give it another try in December but I am not sure if it would be worth it. Thanks. PS: Please, anyone else who took the test recently, especially today, did you have the same awkward feeling those verbal scores do not reflect what you actually experienced during the test?
  3. Could someone solve these and explain, please? A k-number is a positive integer with the special property that 3 yimes its units' digit is equal to 2 times its tens' digit. 1) The number of K-numbers between 10 and 99 2) 3 Answer= equal - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - If (1/2^m) + (1/2^m) = 1/2^x, then x expressed in terms of m is 1) m/2 2) m-1 3)m+1 4)2m 5)m^2 Answer = 2
  4. Wow! Well done Annabel. I am not sure if you already answered this somewhere else but how relevant do you think are the GRE/ETS materials for the actual test? are the math problems similarly difficult as those offered in those prep materials? Thanks.
  5. Hi, I will be taking the test on the 18th of October. I have previously taken the test twice (in 2003 and 2005). Now, I noticed ETS has made some changes to the test and was wondering if anyone in this forum knows whether the levels of difficulty for the quantitative/math section are higher, or if the type of questions are the same as before. Also, did the expectations for the analysis of an issue/argument changed? Or else, can someone provide some insights as to whether the materials and sample questions in the GRE/ETS website are a good representation of the type of problems/topics I will encounter on my actual test? The prep materials for the math section seem a bit too easy, in my opinion, so if someone knows of some materials that offer a bit more challenging problems (useful for the GRE test, of course) I would appreciate you sharing the links or the titles if referring to books. Thanks,
  6. Hi, I found this problem in a GRE prep book and since they give only the answers (but not the explanation of ho to solve it) I decided to post this in this forum and see if any of you guys have a method that can be used to tackle this type of question. n = 7 (19*3):hmm: A) The number of distinct positive factors of n B) 10 Answer is B Thanks in advance.
  7. Thanks for your reply! Would you recommend a website or something I can find on the internet (or download it) besides TestMagic that will wrap all possible topics on Statistics and probability that will appear in the real GRE test? I would appreciate your help greatly.
  8. Thanks! So I will diversify my prep materials and use other sources as you mentioned. I agree with you that the verbal part is excellent in the Big Book. I was more concerned on the Quant part since the problems do not seem to have the same degree of difficulty as in the real test.
  9. Hi, I was wondering whether you fellows know if studying the GRE Big Book is still a good idea these days. A year ago I took the test and encountered some questions on topics (i.e., standard deviation and stuff like that) that I see now are not covered by the BB. I would not like to start studying the Big Book if it does not covered the whole range of topics that the GRE encompass now. Please, anyone shed some light on this… Thanks

  11. Thank You all! I guess I will have to look at doing a Master in Economics first and then see if I can pursue the PhD.
  12. I am considering sending an application to the PhD in Economics at a good university in the US at this time or not so that I can do research in the Urban Economics field I majored in Architecture while in college and am about to finish a MS in Urban and Regional Planning. Now then, my interests are all related to do a PhD in Economics and specialize in Urban Economics. However, my biggest fears are those concerned with my background. I have not taken Economics courses at all and took a couple of calculus courses and one basic statistics course while in college. I am aware that courses in those subjects are the foundation for advance studies such as those I want to become engaged in. I have also heard, however, that some of the admitted students do not have degrees in economics nor in mathematics. What do you consider to be the basic courses/classes one PhD student should have at the start of the program in order to do OK? Do you think I should consider doing a Master in Economics first? Thanks. I look forward to your replying to my questions.
  13. Mr Hudson (is this your real lastname? I don't think so) I suppose you are indian as well (I assumed this for the way you write you use a lot of u r instead of writing full words). Anyways, you should mind your language, do not tell me to wash my mind, wash your first. You all get too hotheaded and now I am offended and request from you an apology. I never used offensive language when I addressed that guy. He already knew what is a good or a bad TOEFL score, so why was he asking 'is this good or bad score'? It was my opinion, a legimitate and valid as anyone else's. I do have some Indian friends indeed and yes, they all boast and just try to look down on other people.
  14. Thanks Guys! I will take your advice and will start looking at some MBA programs with Finance specializations. I was thinking that an MBA would only give one a superficial knowledge of finance but from your comments it seems this is not the case. Again, thanks.
  15. mchakrain, Then you mean that I being an architect with 4 years of experience (in architecture, obviously) and 30 years age could just switch to a career in Finance even if I do not have strong math skills or related experience whatsoever? And would you recommend an MBA with focus on Finance or a Master in Finance? Please, shed some light on this, I am trying to take hard decisions. My salary is rather low (less than 30,000USD a year). Thanks.
  16. 287 would not be bad if you were not from India. But since you seems to be from that country I would say you should really get a score above 290. 287 is rather average score. BTW, I do not understand why all Indians are always trying to boast and get applauses! At least you won't get that from me....You said you did not get any preparation? What about the 15 or so years of education in English you get in India!!! Come on, do not be like that! You are trying to impress with your : "I just gave six practice tests of Cambridge TOEFL Preparation CBT". That's cheap crap! Keep on working on that TOEFL. Until you cannot get above 290, you should work harder.
  17. Hi Guys, I was wondering whether I can take the GMAT a week before the deadline for being considered for second round (at Wharton). Can I report my unofficial scores in order to meet the deadlines and can the school wait for the official reports? I have seen many people registering for the test on November and i do not understand why they do not wait a little longer and prepare some more? Is this because they want to retake the exam in case something goes wrong? Please, any thought are welcome. Thanks
  18. In general, it is an above average score (average I guess is around 7.5). It is the same score I got when I took the test three weeks ago (I also took TOEFL and got 287). It should be enough to meet the minimum score for some good schools (for top schools perfect scores are preferrable, no doubt). :2cents:
  19. Hi Ramiro, I am Jorge from Mexico. I also appreciate your recommendations for the MBA application process. I myself might are starting to prepare for the GMAT (probably I will take it in October or early November) and TOEFL (I am thinking in taking it around September). GMAT is definitely the difficult test of those two. In my case I do not have a strong math background so I am struggling with some of the exercises. Was this section also difficult for you? What did you study as an undergrad student? Also, can you tell us a bit about your work experience? Do you have 3 or more years? Which sector, Private, Public or Non-Profit? If you can share this, it would be helpful, in my opinion. And congrats in your admission to the MBA program:tup: Thanks
  20. Hi, GMATbong, I appreciate the time you took to take a look at my profile and give me some valuable comments. Now, I will try to respond to some of your questions and comments. I actually have a 5-year Bach degree. I am glad to hear that this reduces some of the age concern. Though, there are some 100% mexican indians, they are unfortunately a small percentage of the population. I am part of the majority group (mixed breed). Why do I want a MBA? Well, essentially I want to reach a position where I become the manager rather than the managee. It is likely that at some point in my career I will have the opportunity to get a position where I will need the skills learned in a MBA (I know this could be too general an idea, but that's the gist). In my opinion I believe in that it's better to get all the schooling before jumping into the job market. I have seen that some MBA candidates in this forum already have some good experience but then they want to return to school and get an MBA. I am not sure if this is the most recommendable thing to do but I guess that if you get an MBA before longer It could be actually better for your career -instead of interrupting it for a couple of years-. Also, I have somewhere here that the age factor is concerning for some of the top schools. Not only that, I think that the older you get the weaker your learning potential gets. Those are the reasons why I am considering getting an MBA right after I get my MS in Urban Planning. My goals are to work either for the Private sector (in the Real Estate business or in an Architectural/Planning of significant renown and size) though I do not discard working for a NGO. Please, give me some insights on this, I might be overlooking things. Though it would be better if I have some GMAT scores to show, at this time I am focusing on the Math part of the test (I am practising with a book called GMAT Supercourse, ARCO, 1995 and with material from this web site). I am confident in the other sections (verbal, writing) and I will practice some for those as well later on. I have taken the GRE before (V670,Q720,5.0) in 2003 but I do not if this test is comparable to GMAT (I heard GMAT is a bit more difficult). In any case, if you say I can make it into one of the big schools I will invest some more time on preparing a strong application package. Also, I might be having some more work experience in this fall (in the form of internship or voluntary work with either a State Agency or a Private company) and possibly a published article -I am not sure if this is relevant for an application for a MBA program?-. Please, feel free to criticize or add some more comments on this. I would really appreciate it.:)
  21. Hi GMATbong, My name is Jorge and I am from Mexico. I have been checking out this forum and think is very instrumental in giving some good feedback and advise. For that reason, I was wondering if you could now pre-evaluate my chances for getting into a Top MBA program. This is my profile and background: Education: Currently working toward a MS in Urban Planning at the University of Texas, Austin, GPA 3.8+ (with Fulbright scholarship) Bachelor in Architecture, GPA 3.97 (approximately) Exchange Program in Japan (1 year, scholarship from the Japanese Government). This was after I finished my undergrad studies and it was related to Japanese Language and Culture. Short courses in India, Hungary and Egypt (Both with scholarships from those governments) *Concerns: I do not know how could I best address the fact that I will be changing fields again -first from Arch to Urban Planning, and now Urban Planning to Business Adm.- I realized after my first semester in grad school that I might not want to be a city planner after all. I also have not taken any quantitative or calculus courses. Work Experience: Research Assistant for this summer 2005 PT Internship with Local Architect. 8 months FT Internship with Non-Profit Organization in Arizona (7 months) in the Planning/Design department 2-3 years in different Governmental Agencies at the State and Local level in my country. *My concern in my work experience is that, except for a short time I was working as a supervisor for some projects (building some small infrastructure and facilities for my city) and manage people and times, I do not really feel I have enough exposure as a manager or the like. Besides, my experiences have been, in the recent years, rather varied (is this a bad thing?) Extracurricular: Multilingual skills (French, Japanese and some Italian) Travel grants to a couple of conferences in South Korea and Iran. Though I was not presenting anything, they were just grants fro attending. GMAT/TOEFL Scores: I feel confident I can get some good grades in my GMAT (I have been preparing some in the past months in both verbal and math, and a little bit in writing). The TOEFL does not seem to be a problem at all (probably I will be able to get something beyond 280) Is my background in Architecture and urban Planning a bad or good thing? Also, I will be 29 years old when I send my aplication, is this of concern for the Top schools? I think this should be enough for you to assess my profile and determine whether I have some chances of getting into the top schools. Suggestions about what steps I should do to enhance this application will be very welcome as well. Thanks a lot, Jorge

  23. Meneldur, I guess you're so right in that discipline plays a great deal in mastering a language. I like it a lot learning languages and I have transformed this into one of my hobbies. I believe in that you'll get a high score in the CPE as well. Good luck
  24. Meneldur, That's such a great score (almost perfect!). I was just wondering about your Englsih background -things like for how many years have you been studying English, or if you've spent some time in an Speaking English country, things like that-. It seems almost unreachable to get such a high score but I guess it is not impossible. Again, congrats on your score. I myself took the test in Nov 2003 and got a 273. Now I am going to take it again on September and hope I can get something higher than 280 and hopefully closer to yours. Jorge
  25. Bulla Shah, I tried the Dethi.com site and look for the free download materials but did nof find any! Could you please tell me exactly where they are or can you possibly send the files to my email jormat76@yahoo.com.mx. I would be very thankful for this. Jorge
