  1. Students in recent past have gone on to UPenn and Yale if memory serves me right after taking the first year at uwo. If you're strong in the courses you have a good shot at going elsewhere for a PhD if that's what you want. Very good program overall if you decide to stay. Especially in labor, applied econ and money/macro is getting very strong again.
  2. I would say it gives you excellent preparation and signalling provided you do well in the program of course. The program at uwo requires you to take all PhD courses. Most of the content in such courses is standard across most mainstream schools thus if you perform well you have an excellent shot at going elsewhere. Recent students have gone on to Upenn (2015) and I heard yale a couple years before but not sure who or when exactly.
  3. Hey easternlance, my decision came down to western and UoT but I ultimately decided to attend western for reasons related to funding and how the overall program fit with my interests. I also really liked the idea of being in a class with a group of 12-20 people max and having access to faculty pretty much anytime. But I'm sure you'll do great at UoT they have a really great program there! Best of luck and feel free to stay in touch I will start doing some math at some point this summer and I'll be close to Toronto.
  4. Congrats EasternLance that is great news! If it makes you feel better there is no more Doctoral-Stream program at UoT any longer I had that confirmed by Ettore. Some people will be pre approved to take Core PhD sequences however they will be awarded the same degree and not receive the same levels of funding as previous years from my understanding. I was confused as well when I received my offer letter..
  5. I have heard McMaster is a great place to go if you want to use it as a stepping stone to UBC and or UoT! I would also consider Queens as well as they are currently third ranked in the big 4 and have a solid track record for getting people in those places as well. But honestly, the impression I get from speaking with professors is that either one of those terminal masters can get you into some solid institutions provided that you perform well in the program!
  6. I heard McMaster has a pretty solid program especially if you're trying to use it as a stepping stone for a higher ranked program. Apparently its on the outside looking in for the Top 4 rankings. Queens would probably be a really good spot to use as a stepping stone as well!
  7. Oh cool, well best of luck to all! If you hear back from them definitely shoot me a personal message we can meet up before the summer sessions! It will be a really intense year so we should find some people to form a study group
  8. Toronto is beginning to roll out its second round of offers. Western will likely send out second round offers if they dont have the numbers they're aiming for at this point in time. Keep in mind Western sent out around 45-50 offers and expect to get 15-20 total MA's & PhD's so it is unlikely you'll see an offer from them if you have not already. Don't know about the rest of the schools.
  9. PhD or MA? I haven't heard anything from them regarding the MA either way. A rep from the school told me they were going to have offers out by the end of this week (Mar 17) lol. Anyways, I won't be going there regardless of what they offered. Anyone in here planning on going to UWO? If so we should meet up before the math camp starts!
  10. It's official. There is no longer separate streams (doctoral or regular) for UoT. People will only have the ability to get pre approval to take core PhD squences.
  11. It appears all first rounds went out March 3 pocketecon. Its possible you may get a response after march 19 or earlier depending on acceptance rates!
  12. Everyone that I know of that received the option to take PhD sequences had the exact same funding as regular stream. There is an option in the letter to submit offer letters from other programs to the grad director. Perhaps that may increase funding packages? That's what I did at least so lets hope for the best.
  13. Yeah I get the impression they are eliminating the Doctoral Stream all together. I personally was not offered the ability to take PhD sequences but I know someone that was offered admission and had the option to take sequences. However there is no additional incentives for doing so aside from not having to take them again. It appears everyone has received the same funding for the most part which is unfortunately very little considering cost of living and tuition.

  15. I am not too sure. I did not apply there to be honest. Maybe give the grad coordinator or grad assistant a call during normal business hours?

  18. First round offers went out around Feb 9, I already received an offer of admission. I believe second round offers go out after march 6! If you get accepted direct message me to let me know and we can meet up for beers!
  19. Has anyone else been accepted to UWO PhD Stream - MA yet? If so, what is your decision? Trying to get in touch with potential future classmates.
  20. Thanks for the reply ecomath. That is definitely helpful. If you don't mind me asking how much math did you take in your undergrad?Would you by chance be able to share with me the background of some of your fellow class mates so I can get a better idea of what to expect?
  21. Thanks for the reply ecomath! While you were UoT how did you find the course load for the doctoral stream? Were the core PhD sequences you had to take doable? And if you don't mind me asking how many people in your DS MA cohort move into the PhD program the following year and what kind of averages did they need to maintain to get in?
  22. Hey ecomath, is that something that is listed on Queens website or is this something you only find out when you arrive there? Are you by chance familiar with what they're looking for when making those sorts of offers to applicants?
  23. Hey EasternLance, from what I have discussed with my professors they think I have a good shot at all the programs I applied to above. However, I still need to finish strong in my advanced micro course and do decent in Calc 3/Math stats to really solidify my chances. I know a couple of people at Queens this year and the year before that came from my school and they were admitted with out taking any extra math at all. Of course they had very good grades in the core micro, macro and metrics courses in addition to math for economists. I also know someone that just graduated from the doctoral stream MA in Toronto that did not take any additional math on top of the standard math for economists courses mandatory in the program and he managed to do reasonably well in the program. But again, he had a very good GPA and some really strong LOR's. I really think the LOR's play a big role in these schools especially if your profs are graduating from these programs and are reasonably well known in those crowds. I have 2 LOR's that are grads from Queens, 1 from Western and 1 from UBC. In summary, I really think it is a case by case situation for admissions. If you have taken a good amount of math, one well in the core micro/macro/metrics courses and have decent LOR's I think you should be competitive at most schools. But who knows what the competition will be like this year! CanadianEcon I have heard some similar stories. The job market out there is kind of what is discouraging me from applying out west. I think SFU would be a great program to use as a stepping stone into a top PhD program but then again so would any of the top 4 programs so we will see. I will probably end up choosing a school that is best ranked/gives me the most funding.
  24. Hi guys, thanks for all the feedback. EasternLance I am currently in my last semester of my undergrad so I don't plan on staying any longer to take any more math. I have pretty much taken all the math that is recommended for an MA in Canada with the exception of real analysis and have done reasonably well so I am not too worried about that. According to my professors that are giving me references Real Analysis would probably be overkill for an MA in econ in Canada anyways. I am aiming to get admitted in UoT's doctoral stream or Westerns PhD Stream-MA but we will see what the competition is like this year. CanadianEcon I think I may throw an extra application in to SFU because I heard they have a good program as well but I am hoping to stay on the east coast.
