title:(summary form ets practice test 1) Interview centered method is more valid than dr Fields observation because while he observed children in Tertia, village in a group of island to be reared by all the adults instead of biological parents, in my interview with graduate student as helpers the children talked more about their biological parents.
The author’s point of view cannot be validated unless it is verified on certain aspects such as the type of interview, environmental settings and the type of children interviewed.
The author here blatantly dismisses the other scientists’ approach in studying child rearing. However before it can be agreed on that his own view are correct certain question about the scientific method has to be asked. First and foremost it is important to know whether his approached has been peer-reviewed by others. As in any scientific filed, without a peer review, not study can be validated. The next issue about his approach is the type of question that he asked the children. Obviously if he ended up asking probing questions about the children’s parents and focus less on adults then their answers will be directed towards their biological parents. Thirdly, it is also important to consider whether the interviewers were properly trained for the experiment. An inexperienced interviewer will not be able to ask the right questions and so correct information cannot be extracted. One of the most important aspects of this approach was that the interview setting itself was artificial. So whether the method was valid or not depends on whether the author actually saw the child rearing mechanism in action as Dr. Field has through his observation study. Moreover, the results also depend on the number of interviewees, and type of families. If only a small number of children with a stay home family were interviewed, it could be that the biological parent had more time to send with their kids so the child will talk about them more. As a result, this could skew the data. Furthermore, it is important to know whether the author interviewed all the islands or some of them. If he sampled from only some of the island, then this would not represent the correct population and so will skew the data as well
Thus, all of these aspects need to be considered before any method can be rejected.
