  1. [h=1]From NYU Stern:[/h]Q: How does your program differ from a traditional arts and science economics program? A: The content is the same. You'll take the same core courses and comprehensive examinations as your colleagues in NYU's Graduate School of Arts and Science economics program, one of the elite programs in economics. Q: Then why should I apply to Stern? A: We have better resources and give more personal attention to our students than most arts and science programs. Our placement record reflects this. Q: What fields can I study? A: In principle you can study most fields of economics, but we emphasize two: industrial organization and applied micro theory (including applications to strategy) and macroeconomics (including applications to finance). NYU has unusual depth in both.
  2. Guys, I have this stupid question, but there's no use starting a new thread, so I'll ask here. Does anybody have an idea how an assistant professor can be appointed as an associate professor? Is there any specific requirement on the number of publications and/or the reputation of the publishing journals? Any other requirements? There are several associate professors in the Econ department at my school, but they vary so much in terms of everything - age, number of published articles, frequency of appearance on field journals, teaching experience, etc. In particular, there is one fairly old professor who did his Ph.D. at a Top 1 Econ program in the nineties. He has published only 4 articles ever since (the journals are very well reputed - American Economic Review, etc.). Another professor publishes pretty regularly (has had ~20 publications to date) but at less-reputed journals. Any insights? Thanks! :)
  3. Is it time we stared a "Profiles and Results" thread that we did in 2014, guys? If yes, can a moderator open such a thread, please? I think the offers are in for almost everybody.
  4. Boston U surely knows the best way to remind me of how incapable I am. I have just received the second rejection letter from BU (first from the department, now from the grad school). I thought this was understandable until I found that the attached letter was password-protected. To make me feel "better," BU also did not forget to promise me that an overseas official rejection letter is coming in the mail. Hmm well-done, BU!
  5. Oh man. That rejection email from CMU hurts so so bad :(
  6. Congratz! Hopefully I'll be able to say "this process is officially over for me" anytime soon. @all: does anybody have an idea when waitlisted applicants typically hear back from Minnesota? Thanks!
  7. Re: CMU Someone has posted this email message sent from CMU on Gradcafe: ""We have made a first round of offers in all areas. We do not have a formal waitlist. I expect to have decisions on any remaining applications by the end of March." I guess it's the end of the road for us - who are still waiting :( Goodbye, CMU!
  8. Thanks to everyone for your great input! I have emailed the Grad Director and I am keeping my fingers crossed now.
  9. Anyone else still waiting to hear from Carnegie Mellon? Do you guys happen to have any insights?
  10. Thank you, ColonelForbin. Will Pitt give my offer to someone else because of my indecisiveness though?
  11. Dear all, I have recently received a personalized email from the Director of Grad Studies at Pittsburgh asking whether I am still interested in attending (anybody else received a similar letter?). If I am, she may make a funded offer within a very short time. Pitt is one of my top choices and I would very much like to be part of the program. The thing is that I am currently sitting on two waitlists from UMN and UVA, whose results won't be released until mid-April I suppose. I do not intend to fake my interest in the program at all (I'm genuinely enthusiastic about Pitt), but at the same time I would like to wait a little more to see how my results at UVA and UMN (my dream programs too :upset:) will be. Could you guys advise me on what I should do and in particular how I should respond to Pitt, please? Thank you all very much. P.S.: My interests lie in development economics and international macroeconomics.
  12. I'm not sure what you mean by "genuine." Most people use the US News Rankings to determine the Top 10/20/30/etc. programs (Best Economics Programs | Top Economics Schools | US News Best Graduate Schools). US News also ranks subfields of Economics, including Macro/Development. These rankings are just for reference anyway, I believe.
  13. Thanks a lot for your wish! :) By the way, has anyone admitted to Pitt heard from the department regarding the Visitation Day? I have not received any email from the department for three weeks.
  14. Waitlisted by Minnesota. After having received so many rejections and having been so depressed over the past few weeks, I was actually pretty relieved to (finally) receive their notification email :). Though the waiting game is still not over yet for most of us, I hope things will work out well for me and other fellow applicants in the end.
  15. Seems like it. More posts have been coming... :( Yet another implicit rejection. This process is so cruel!
  16. Minnesota has sent out admission, rejection, and waiting list emails, but I have received nothing. The status on my application still says "Awaiting Program Decision." Is this an implicit rejection for me, guys?
  17. Hello all, As far as I am concerned, it may help if an applicant on the waiting list attends the Open House and shows interest. But I wonder if not being able to attend the event gives a negative impression, which will eventually result in a rejection. I have received an invitation from my dream program, where I got waitlisted. I am an international student living in Europe. A round-trip ticket from where I live to the school costs around $1,000. I also need to obtain a visitor visa as well. It is stated specifically in the invitation email that the department will reimburse, but just a very small amount (a few thousand dollars divided equally among visitors). So I think it is highly unlikely that I will be able to go. Is there anything I could do to convey my interest in the program while being absent, still? I am fully aware that I am not their priority, but again, this is my dream program and I would very much like to be part of it. Thank you guys for any input!
  18. Mine still says "Awaiting Program Decision." :( (Yet) another rejection I assume. This process is soooo cruel.
  19. How many more schools are you waiting for, guys? :) By the way, do you find it strange that Rice hasn't released admission decisions yet? I remember last year someone getting his/her decision in the middle of February.
  20. Just out of curiosity, what are you going to do if the worst scenario happens, phd hopeful? Hope you do not mind me asking this question. So far I'm completely not sure what the future holds in store for me. Everything is up in the air.
  21. Exactly, Michalz! I am not sure what to make of Chicago's quietness either :(. I was also surprised to see someone's post about his/her rejection from Chicago on Gradcafe. There's only one post so far though, making me think twice about its validity. But still, a completely silent mailbox is the worst thing ever! Can somebody please shed some light on the case of Georgetown for me? The school is very well reputed, and its Economics department is extremely selective (~10%, which is roughly equal to Duke's acceptance rate, and surely lower than, say, Chicago's, Minnesota's, Madison's, and UCLA's). What are the main reasons for its Economics Ph.D. program ranking only in the vicinity of 45th? Thanks, guys!
  22. I am so sorry, guys. I didn't mean to push or pressurize anybody. Maybe my nervousness just got the best of me. Lesson learned and advice taken.
  23. Accepted but waitlisted for funding at Pittsburgh (will 100% go there if awarded full funding) :(. I am sorry I may come off as a desperate pest, but in case any Pitt's admit has already had or will have a better offer or has decided not to stay on the waitlist, please kindly notify the Department at your earliest convenience so as to expedite the process a little for those of us still waiting. Thank you guys millions, and best of with the rest of your applications. :D
  24. Waitlisted by my dream program Virginia :(. I know this sounds desperate, but in case any UVA's new admit has already had or will have a better offer, please kindly notify Professor Ciliberto or Ms. Futrell at your earliest convenience so as to expedite the process for us a little. Thank you guys so much, and please receive my sincere congratulations ^_^
