Issue: I've got a confirmed admit from both of these schools... Tippie (U of Iowa) - Grad Asst with salary of 8K per annum and In-state tuition (10K per year) Baylor U (Texas) - Full Fellowship (waiver of entire tuition fees for both years) + Salary of 4 K per annum Which wud be better? need ur help, i've got other offers as well but these are the two i can't pick between...both seem good, though tippie seems to be the better school, Baylor has offered better funding, now what is to be DONE??? Thanks a lot for spending ur time reading this.. [clap] Hope u reply!!! Yours Coolly, The One and Only, TheRock.

  4. hey guys...my bro did his MS in CS from ia state u.. (no wonder) he says its better than U of i, atleast as far as CS is concerned... but on a more serious note, ia state u is better for funding, my bro got a TA since the start !!!!! but then he has always been brillant ... overall iowa is a nice place to augment formal education, ranked as one of the safest in the US, has one of lowest crime rates, its cold though, really cold around dec/jan...bone-chilling cold, but then u win some, u lose some... all in all an excellent prospect...good research options, if u read their mails (even the automated ones) they're nice-sounding. :-)
  5. dudes, im a novice here but bear with me, i have previous experience in these matters... i believe u need to treat this tactfully, most schools have this philosophy that once they decide to recruit u (on ur academic/ professional merit) only then do they look at the financial condition of the applicant...ofcourse there are those that only look at the financial statements and then give u admits based on that (u wud wanna avoid such schools if u ask me)... ... anyway coming back to the issue on hand, MOST schools do NOT offer NEED-BASED financial aid to international aid...(sad but true!!!) but they do offer MERIT-BASED aid (graduate / research / teaching assistantship) or tuition scholarship (some call it fellowship)...so ur financial statement is just a means of them ensuring that u have enuf funds to pursue and complete ur graduate education should u not be awarded any scholarship or grad asstn position. it isn't an indicator of ur merit or doesn't affect ur chances for PROVISIONAL or CONDITIONAL admisstion. ... basically what im trying to say is that (1) getting admit into the course of ur choice is a different issue from (2) proving that u can pursue and complete ur course by showing necessary funds in ur bank account ... if u want to know what i did, jus say sumthin like this: or sumthin to this effect: "Once recommended for admission, I undertake to provide the “Financial Statement for International Applicants” (or whatever name they give this documentation:::use their name, dont invent ur own) and the necessary bank documents. I also undertake to fulfil all the formalities concerning the issue of the release of I-20 forms from the . I believe you will find that everything else is in order." hope this helps i think this oughta do, for now sorri if this sounded like the chapter of sum finance-ur-education guide Yours Coolly, The One and Only, The Rock
  6. thanQ swetha (is that version 12 or sumthin' ...jus kiddin') ...btw i'm done with the eek*jams as of now, have got mine masters coming up in march though...but i'm cool with that :-) laterz.
  7. hey huhitachi, i took the GMAT on 16 th dec, scored a 700 (93 %tile) (Q 43, V 42) (i know, i did better on verbal than on quant!! but thats jus the way it panned out) i took the TOEFL on the 31 st of dec (297, as u know), its quite funny, coz i'd always try in vain to get a date for new years and now when i was looking for a date (for the TOEFL) i got the 31st :P take care and hang loose, OnO Yours coolly, The One and Only, The Rock
  8. Hey nopainnogain06, accept mine sympathies... If ur range is 193-250, as u say it is, then your Essay will determine ur final score, i.e. if u get a 6.0 on ur essay (TWE), then ur total score will be 250, and if u get a 0 on ur essay (not probable) then u'll end up with a 193. Mostly u might end up somewhere in the middle. Yours coolly, The One and Only, The Rock

    Phone No. for ASR??

hey minud, hows it goin... chec it out, all ur questions answered http://www.ets.org/toefl/learners/cbt/additionalscore.html no online forms, only phone OR fax OR mail options available ( i know it sux, but the phone option is automated!) hang loose Yours coolly, The One and Only, The Rock
  10. Hey, my final score for the TOEFL 297...(1 reading Q wrong, rest all were correct, Reading 29, Listening 30, Structure/Writing 30, TWE 6.0) had to pay 10 $ to ETS to get the score over the fone, they still havnt sent me my official score report...i guess they're tryin to maximize returns lol... advice: On the "Listening Section" of the TOEFL, the volume adjustment SUCKS (the "You can now change the volume" - male voice is inconsistent with the volume of the voice-over u hear on the real questions...what i suggest is that u raise the volume using the upper arrow rather than the volume control on the headphone (keeping the volume control on the headphone at a moderate level will give you the opportunity to raise the volume should u find that it has depreciated on the real test Qs) advice: if ur preparin for the GRE/ GMAT, do NOT bother about the TOEFL thats it for now Yours Coolly, The One and Only, TheRock
  11. Hey David... (this is a BIG one, accept my thanks from the beginning itself!) First of all let me say I appreciate the work you do here, day in and day out...how do you do it? i suppose the intangibles must be far more gratifying than the tangibles. I wonder though whether the intangibles are as satisfying as the tangibles :P Well...i'm an Economics grad (Bachelor of Arts, B.A.) from the University of Mumbai, India...I graduated with the "Second Order of Merit" in the entire University, securing the First Rank in my college. Thereafter, I received the National Scholarship of the National Scholarship Scheme (N.S.S.) and will be completing the sixteenth year of education (Master of Arts in Economics) in June 2005. Even though the fees were nominal, I was honored that the state would take interest in my further education at the masters level (in India, ofcourse!) I took the GMAT for the first time in Dec, 2004 and my overall scaled score is 700. I took a one year break after my 10+2 ("A" levels in vocational Science C.S.) to work with All India Reporter Pvt. Ltd., the premeir Law Reporters and Publishers of India. I had to do this because there were financial responsibilites that I needed to shoulder. AIRPL procures judgements and publishes the same as patented citations and case-law. All India Reporter is the first and most widely subscribed to Law Reporter. The brand is numero uno in its industry and has been around for more than 83 years now. AIRPL currently sustains India's largest postal sub-office with more than 70 employees (just postal dept) busy round the year, running up a postal bill of approximately a quarter of a million dollars for 1.2 million copies of patented publications. (i said all this jus to impress upon u that the company isn't sum two-bit ABC propeitorship firm) I worked with AIRPL for one year as a "Business Development Representative" with independent charge in the area of Mumbai.I was one of only two authorised reps in Mumbai. So it wasn't just-another-brick-in-the-wall- sorta position. I have filed income-tax returns and have documented proof to support these claims. The professional recommendation I have procured from no less than the M.D. of our firm is also one of the positives. While pursuing my graduation in Econ, i continued to work with A.I.R.P.L. on similar terms and since the position was of an entrepreneurial position, there were no promotions, but yes, the income does show an incrementing curve as the years passed by. I'm not applying to any of the top ten schools. I'm not even applying to any of the top twenty or so schools, since I don't have the financial capacity to bear this burden; moreover I can't afford to expend all my life's savings on my own education since I have siblings and need to support their education/ upbringing (My father is no more, therefore I'm the one responsible for them now) But I'm applying to some of the middle-tier schools, like UMass Amherst, UW Madison, UI Tippie and a couple of others such as these. I would like your insights regarding my chances at securing a favorable recommendation for admission to any of these schools. I would also like your professional opinion about my work experience and especially whether the schools will take it on record since I have done most of it while still at school. Thank you for the time spent in perusing this message. Needless to add, I appreciate your involvement. In anticipation, Yours Coolly, The One and Only, The Rock.
  12. hey mba05applicant... ur message stem leaves me with two options... either i cud sugarcoat mine reply or i cud give it to u straight, the latter might seem harsh but i prefer it since it'll save u a lot of hassles later on... so its better u undergo the heartburn rite now... ur gmat scores aren't good enuf if ur looking for any sort of merit-based financial aid in a decent business school (decent = ranked in the top 100). but then theres an upside to all this, if ur academic grades during ur undergrad coursework is EXCEPTIONAL, u cud make up for ur somewhat low GMAT scores...it all depends, the business school will consider ur application in its entirety. still GMAT remains the only common gradient for admission officers to measure how down the slope we really are, or how many points do we have to "scale" yet... so think about it, if ur gonna self-finance ur tuition fees then go ahead, this score is definitely good enuf to get u admit into a decent school (UNorthCarolina sounds a bit unsure though UMD (UmassDartmouth) sounds alright, i'm not sure what UVA stands for: Vermont, Virginia? if its Virginia, then its gonna be a lil tough) well thats about it...consider everything before u arrive at a decision, don't act in haste. and dont bother too much about ur GMAT test score. it isn't a reflection on ur academic or scholastic ability ...not even ONE LITTLE BIT. take care and good wishes. 13. dude, the schools u've selected all seem nice...they all have a great rep and provide excellent professional pedigree. basically the thumb rule to follow here is that u have TEN schools 3 - above ur expectations (not an exceptional chance of acceptance) (say u cud take, Chicago, Michigan-ann arbor and UCLA), 4 that are consistent with ur expectation (good chance of acceptance) (say Stern, Cornell, Emory and Fischer) and the last 3 that are a bit below ur expectations (sure-fire chance of acceptance, barring any unforseen circumstances (say, Purdue, Maryland and Kelley) And when u say Michigan do u mean ann arbor or twin cities ? coz that'll change the above categorization a bit. Also please look at U of Washington, i say this to any business applicant who wants a decent management education from an excellent school that offers good merit-based aid. Focus is the key: do not even consider LBS or Queens, and forget about ISB... i kept carnegie mellon out coz i think its too darn expensive for mine taste (the RoI isn't too high); agreed its amazing in tech, but ur goin there as a business masters, not as a tech student. u've got the right attitude, now u jus gotta translate it into action... good luc and aim for the skies, maybe u'll become a *star* some day! 14. Hey guys... this forum absolutely rocks and many thanks to Erin and his staff for the same. I've got a overall GMAT scaled score of 700 and a TOEFL score RANGE of 240-297 (dunno the official score yet). My undergraduate major was Economics six papers (B.A.) from the University of Mumbai, where i secured the Second Order of Merit in the university... i got one year work ex in the legal media sector as a Marketing Manager in Mumbai, India i need to know which are the schools of management in the US that give graduate assistantship positions and substantial tuition scholarships/ fellowships to deserving INTERNATIONAL students... i know this question is the million-dollar question but i wud appreciate the collective insights of this group of intelligent people...coz as someone once said, two minds are better than one and about a hundred cud only mean much Better! thanQ and hang loose The One and Only, The Rock

  16. Hey manasi4gre, thanQ for ur regards, 1 Q for u though... how do u get the time to congratulate every1 that ever posts a message on the board ? ... (continued...) how've u been doin on ur tests, ne luc on the GRE ? " fearless n hopeless, wine n bread - i need it more n less; talkative, working at pretence, envious of love, consumed of hatred; may all your things be mine! (u can have mine, since they're all junked newys) " --Proverb--
  17. hey guys... gave my toefl today, got a range of 240-297, got one Q wrong on the RC, all the rest were right...dunno how well i did on the TWE, i gave my GMAT on 16 th dec, haven't recd the AWA scores yet, so dunno how ETS grades my essays. if ur prepared for the GMAT, then u don't need to do much for the TOEFL, its a breeze. I have to second most peoples' opinions about the volume adjustment on the "Listening" section...what i suggest is that u raise the volume using the upper arrow rather than the volume control on the headphone (keeping the volume control on the headphone at a moderate level will give you the opportunity to raise the volume should u find that it has depreciated on the real test Qs) besides that, keep cool and take one Q at a time! (there isn't an option!) laterz Yours Coolly (it does have a double L) the One and Only, The Rock.
