  1. I am currently reading 'Guns, Germs and Steel'. It is a must-read non-fiction book.
  2. I would suggest a formal shirt, pants and maybe a jacket (that depends, you can probably ask the school/firm where u are interviewing and they should be able to tell you if its a formal or semi-formal event.). I would not suggest a chudidhar. A formal shirt and pant are usually enough.
  3. PhD EE, University of Virginia.:) Anyone else heading there? PM me.
  4. gforce is right, I would definitely pick OSU.. OSU is a very very good school.. NCSU is very low on funds... the program is very good, and the location is great for computer science graduates, but the funding scene is not too good. There is a yahoo group ('ncsu-fall-2005', i think) where u can probably find more info on this.
  5. there are some more Indian Student Associations listed here, if anyone needs them: http://garamchai.com/indassc.htm#New%20Mexico
  6. Congrats, Markiv81!!! UMCP is indeed a great admit!!!! Correct me if I am wrong, but the advisor mentioned in the admissions letter is merely a graduate advisor ( who would be the one you report to when you get to the university, and who would be helping you with your course selection, and your plan of study), and everyone is assigned one. Are you sure this person is your research advisor as well?? :hmm: Just a doubt..
  7. Hi everyone, I am a new member to TestMagic. I am an international student applying to PhD programs in EE, Fall 2005. I have been admitted to Va Tech (TA, most probably), Univ of Virginia (TA) and NCSU (financial aid package not released yet). Does anyone have info on the EE program (In controls) at any of these univs?
  8. Has anyone heard from UMCP? I had applied for a PhD in EE (have completed my masters) I called them and they said the decisions would be out by the end of the month, but I saw that someone on this forum had an invite to their open house (I dont remember who).. so I guess some decisions have already been taken.. Has anyone heard from them??
  9. Hey Everyone, I am a new member at this forum. This is with regard to EEPHDWANNABEs question about invitations to visit the school. I have also been invited to visit a school for a one-day orientation session (all travel, lodging expenses , etc paid for) next week. (I am also an EE PhD Wannabe, by the way). The email that I got was kinda vague (I was told that I was among the top 5% of applicants and that since I was an international student, they could only offer me an official admit after identifying the proper financial aid package for me). So I am not sure. Though the grad coordinator I spoke to said that they usually invite only people that they have admitted and so she said I had nothing to worry about. I mailed a fellow TMian who had this to say- "I'm told that the purpose of visits for admitted students is for them to "sell" you on the school. Take tours, meet professors and current grad students, learn about the research programs, attend a few classes, etc. Some schools (like Washington, at least for physics) even base their fellowship decisions on who visits and what they think of the student. I guess the thinking is that a student that attends the open house is more serious about attending and saves the school from giving a fellowship to an applicant who is only using them as a safety school and has no plan to attend if they can get in anywhere else. That's just my thought, though." Anyway, I think you can rest assured that you are definitely among the top applicants and are a very serious contender. All the best!!
