I don’t think it makes much sense to choose a school that has worse advising because they have a higher rank. First of all, the US News ranking is a weird metric to use in my opinion, and if your goal is to do good economics, which it should be if you’re pursuing a PhD, then the school with better advising should be chosen every time.

Although I did not go, I know that some waitlisted candidates did attend the visit day which I believe already occurred.

Most likely, yes. If you're in Stern, then I would imagine some of your advisors should be from Stern. But I don't think the program would prevent you from working with professors in the economics department.

Ali Yurukoglu is at Stanford GSB and Eliot Lipnowski is currently at Columbia. NYU Stern has a small cohort, so I would not agree. They have 2 - 3 students a year. Seems comparable to top universities. Like @sickosaid, it should be a really good place for students interested in IO with Dickstein, Cabral, Conlon, etc.
