  1. "However, if this is indeed the case, why wouldn't all dept require interviews." lcculus is clearly a non-behavioral economist. :-)
  2. To (maybe) remove much of the speculation here about the Yale interviews, one of the profs that did some of the interviewing asked me to post the following message: the interviews were new, something they were trying for the first time. they were targeting both language and ability to articulate research questions. so yes more intl's were selected than americans, but it wasn't exclusively about language. no, it was not a field experiment (although they did smile at the thought!). not getting a call does not mean bad news. nor good news. many folks on both sides of the line were called. there was limited time, and uncertainty in the process on how they were going to be used exactly, and so not too many calls were made. but it has helped them think through a bit whether to do more, same but longer, or none, of them next year. and lastly, one would be surprised how much you can learn in 3-5 minutes, beyond mere language. and they apologize if it felt like torture to folks, certainly was not the goal. lastly, decisions likely emailed out in about 10-12 days (it takes time to go from the admissions thru the university protocols, so the 10-12 days prediction is based on prior years timing).
  3. Grad school reminds you of them 24/7 :(
  4. We haven't been told and we're usually told about this as soon as it's confirmed.
  5. I know at the very least Mailath has an offer out to him. I don't think they'd have one out if there wasn't interest on the other side given that he just left a couple of years ago and Larry Samuelson is now here too.
  6. I applied but haven't heard back. Made other plans in the mean time. I think they inform people in May. At least that's what I remember the website saying.
  7. Wow. I remember reading an article about Wisconsin losing everyone since they didn't have the money to hold on to people. I wonder how they pulled this off.
  8. There is a difference between a department and a grad program. Chicago has an amazing department. Easily top 3. Their grad program isn't top three. It's definitely top 10 but that's all I'd commit on.
  9. I'm gonna bite but do mine a little different based on Placements over the past 5 years: 1 MIT 2 Harvard 3 Princeton 4 Yale 5 NWU 6 Berkeley 7 NYU 8 Stanford 9 UMich 10 Chicago That's right. UMich made it. Take that conventional rankings!
  10. Yale made the rankings twice! Damn we're good.:D
  11. Those of us from "unknown state schools" have to stick together ;) Congrats on hitting the jackpot! I'm sure you'll make the best of it.
  12. By all means schmooze away. There is nothing wrong with it. Not only will you show an interest in research but professors will realize that you're one of those serious undergrads who wants to do economics. This will show in the LORs they write you. Don't expect someone to write you a letter just because they saw you at a seminar but when your writers do write they will remember you were there. Also as per your earlier question about the optimal distribution of field interests I think it really comes down to not mentioning a field that a school doesn't really have. Theory at Yale is huge. The Cowles foundation made sure of that. But what you wouldn't do is say I want to go to Yale to do straight public finance or neuroeconomics. Personally I said that I like applied micro and think I might want to do labor but realize that might change. They can't discount you for that. Good luck Harry Lime and congrats Jeeves. I was kinda bummed when you didn't get into Yale but I'm happy to see you'll be going somewhere just as great. Now to wait until tomorrow morning to find out where :)
  13. There is no reason not to wait until the last possible second. If you have until April 15th at midnight I would think you should hold out until then. I don't know if schools are more likely to give someone funding if they have accepted already. It's possible but I don't see the reason they would.
  14. Good catch. They say: But they don't list them Edit: Apparently they do. See next post.
  15. Most schools will give out their list when you are admitted but Yale keeps it open to the public which is kind of what he's talking about.
  16. Yale ranked 30? Hmmmm makes me wonder how a place like that could have placements this year like this: Recent Placement Outcomes ;)
  17. I can say from experience- Yes! :D It's all about showing interest and getting killer LORs. As your GPA and GREs are good enough already all that is left is if your writers take a stand for you. If they do then you're set.
  18. I was thinking about this thread for a while but when I saw this post it made my decision clear: If I couldn't be an economist I'd be a dinosaur instead.
  19. Your determination of who is interesting is endogenous so lack of data isn't your only issue ;)
  20. I was half-kidding but you're right that one has to continue to produce if they want to become a full-professor (and to increase your salary which is important if you have money in your utility function ;) ) but the option is there.
  21. True, but that is pre-tenure ;) LOL. yeap! MIU!
  22. Me too! But don't forget the drama! This board has been better than TV this year, thanks in part to economics. I'm not sure if that's a compliment :hmm:
