  1. Hi All.. I have seen a couple of postings regarding Manhattan GMAT test. Here is my two-pence ( i.e my opinion): 1. The mgmat CATs are quite different from the real test and the powerprep/gmac practice tests. For example, the math questions on the real/pprep/gmac tests seem to be more wordier than the mgmat CATs. 2. the SC and RC are pretty similar but when one really thinks about this, they are easy to replicate. The CR section seems, to me, to be trickier and less wordier. I keep emphasizing wordier b/c I believe that is how the testmakers can make a question more difficult My conclusion: take the MGMAT CATs (after alll how can it hurt..). If anything the tests can be used as a timing training device. However, be sure to take the free GMAC tests. Also, if you have taken the GMAC tests a cple of times and you are hitting the same score level, then you may be seeing the same questions. If you purposely miss the first 3-4 questions in the quant sections, you will, of course, have to get more questions right in succession to get back to your regular score level. However, even if you don't, so what. You will now see an entirely new set of possible GMAT type questions. Moses
  2. A certain roller coaster has 3 cars, and a passenger is equally likely to ride in any 1 of the 3 cars each time that passenger rides the roller coaster. If a certain passenger is to ride the roller coaster 3 times, what is the prob. that the passenger will ride in each of the 3 cars a. 0 b. 1/9 c. 2.9 d. 1/3 e. 1 ANSWER this one is driving me nust -- can anyone explain it to me. thx.
  3. Are X, Y both >0 1. 2x-2y=1 2. x/y > 1 st. 1 2x-2y=1 become x-y = .5 plug some numbers -- I only had to do two sets x y x-y AreX,Y both >0 3.5 3 .5 yes -4 -4.5 .5 no INSUFFICIENT st2 x/y > 1 - who cares about the number 1 -- we only need to know if x,y are both positive In a similar manner to analysing the signs of x,y in x/y > 0, x/y >1 only if x>0,y>0 OR x TOGETHER -- You can use the two rows from statement 1 to start. However, the second row does not satisfy st.2 -- cant use it -- try another one x y x-y x/y >1? x,y both > 0?? 3.5 .5 .5 yes yes -4 -4.5 .5 no ------cant use this data 3.0 -.5 .5 no --------cant use -.5 -1 .5 no -----cant use see the pattern -- to satisfy both stments -- x,y both have to > 0 answer is C. I know this seems a little long but this is the best way for me to solve these probs. I can make up time in geometry very quickly.....
  4. I don't know if I am right but I believe that the 'trick' in this question is to recognize that one does not really care about the numbers only the "x's". Staement 1: x^3[1-x^2] x^3(1-x^2)(-1) > 0(-1) -- remem. to change the direct. of the ineq sign x^3(x^2-1) > 0 -- you could break this down but why bother this equation can be approx. as x^5 > 0 --> x has to be > 0 - sufficient statement 2: x^2-1 approx. equal to x^2 -- x can be neg/positive -- insufficient answer is A As I said, I am not sure if I did this 100% correctly -- any input welcome msadani@comcast.net
  5. yeah.....I don't even know what lunch is anymore. In my case, the commute actually ended up working out. I would some on the way home but, as I said, minimal studying. if you are using the subway in nyc, getting a seat might be a tricky but if you have to be at work at 7-7:30, then you prob. have a good shot. At the very least, I think you should make some flashcards with gmat material/formulas, I think I even found a zip file on this forum. You could flip through these cards standing or sitting or doing anything. Also, the gmac practice sware has 30minute drills. Other than that, you gotta hit it on the weekends. sux but what are you gonna do. def. pick up the manhattan gmat sc guide -- really good.
  6. I work in nyc and have a long commute from jersey -- actually its fifty minutes by train but I was obsessed with finding a way to use that time and I finally did. this may be extreme but what the hell. First, I tried, and even noticed others, who would try and study for the gmat with the og book. can you imagine what pain in the *** it can be to try to work with that huge book. I am an engineer by training and I was deteremined to find a better way. The first thing I did was cannibalize the og, verbal guide, and quant guide. I tore out the pages, as much as possible as once with a utility knife, and then xeroxed them with only one face rather than a double-sided copy. I then started using a legal-sized clip board and legal-sized paper. I found that even when I three to a seat(meant for three) and if sat on one of the corners, I could tear through the sections without a lot of turning pages, flipping, etc. and I made damn good use of the fifty minutes. Additionally, it was pretty good for my concentration. the most important thing to realise is that you are fresh in the morning. I did do some studying when I got home but absolutely minimal. hope this helps
  7. Hello I need to find more practice tests. I have already done the four tests (old and new) from the gmac and even have a pprep cd for trade. I was hoping that someone might have the kaplan CATs. I now they are harder but I want to use them to build up my speed and endurance.

    Scratch paper

I have taken the test once with the erasable board. I actually even built my own scracth board to practice with. You can do this by taking 5 legal pages, laminating them, and wirebounding them at one of the shorter edges. This can be easily done at Kinkos. I actually just phoned in the order. One thing to keep in mind is that I picked the hard laminate as opposed to the soft one. In the real test, it appeared to me that they used the soft one and they used yellow graph paper. Additionally, the pens they use in the real test turned out to be the exact type that I bought to use in practice. The brand is Staedtler Luminocolor non-permanent. These are pretty high end as far pens go. The pens come in a variety of "widths" denoted by a letter on the cap of the pen. F=Fine, S=SuperFine. There were many others but I bought these two widths. Bottom Line: The eraseboards really suck. My pen would not mark properly on the board and I changed it. It takes some getting used to and I recommend at the very least one should practice with a pen and paper. hope this helps.....
  9. I agree with the earlier posts. You really only need the kboard for the awa. I found that I could write my notes on the scratchboard and when ready to type the essay could move the kboard back to a position that is more centered with the monitor. during the q and v sections, I believe I pushed the kboard nearly to the left wall of the cubicle. My complaint was with the pens. they were of good quality but it seems, because of the scratch board material, that they wouldn't write on the first stroke -- kind of annoying but not a killer.
  10. Hi.. I have been practicing with the powerprep tests (old and newer version). My question invovles the reviewing of the questions after the test is completed. It seems that the GMAC sware only shows some of the questions and often they are not in the order in which they were originally displayed. Has anyone come across this issue msadani@comcast.net
  11. Ok... I worked out the %tage on B and it came to 62%. With this number, it cannot be determined if the total change was greater than 100% and therefore, B is insuff - you do have to eval. both stmnts However, this question could have been even nastier if the amount on b worked out to exactly 100% and since we know that the total change is a continious increase, then the %tage change from stmnt A must be some positive amount and make the total change greater than 100%. In this case, B also would have been sufficient
  12. Am I missing something here????? Isn't the abs. value of anything positive>0 I think I just got it... They are not asking if it is "positive" but whether it is greater than 0....right?
  13. I picked 'B' -- I also am confused....
  14. problem solving quest: At a certain health club, 30% of the members use both the pool and sauna, but 40% of the members who use the pool do not use the sauna. What percent of the members of the health club use the pool? - I get hopelessly lost with these and they eat up so much time. I have tough time "seeing" where to go. Is there some pictorial way of doing these equations -- I tried a venn diagram but I don't think that really works well. Thanks, Moses
