ShalomFang
I choose A as my answer. First, we need a "which" after the comma - B, C can be eliminated. Second, D is redundant and awkward, eliminated. Last, "and it is" in E is redundant but "and is" in A is concise - E can be eliminated. Left A as the answer. Strong
Can anyone explain whether 'as big as', or 'grow to be' is idiomatically correct ? As far as I know, grow is the "to be" verb form, similar to appear, become and feel wherein we usually omit "to be". For e.g. we say "You appear normal" rather than " you appear to be normal". Which one is more idiomatically correct here?? Any verbal gurus??
Neo750
IMO : A A. include the animal known as the killer whale, which can grow to be 30 feet long and is ---- "grow to be" not correct B. include the animal known as the killer whale, growing as big as 30 feet long and -- the subject of previous sentence is species, but killer whale is the one that grows big C. include the animal known as the killer whale, growing up to 30 feet long and being -- same as above D. include the animal known as the killer whale, which can grow as big as 30 feet long and is -- correct, grow as big as 30 feet long and (which) is E. include the animal known as the killer whale, which can grow to be 30 feet long and it is -- "can grow to be 30 feet long" - doesn't sound good
yoda_ngen
For D, grow and big are conveying the same message. Hence redundant. The construction as big as is usually used to compare two things. In D, it is used to compare killer whale to 30 feet long. ... that's why D is incorrect.
