For the first one, draw a perpendicular from pt C to meet it at say pt E. Now angle ADC=125 so angle CDE=55(180-125) the perpendicular CE=cos 55*6.Cos 55= which is between 0.707 and 1.732(cos 60=1.732,cos 45=0.707) lets take it as 1.5 .So Ce=1.5*6=9

area of parallelogram=4*9=36

hence answer should be A:whistle:

For second one,for retirees annual income spent =40-37=3

Total income=40.

Percent of total average annual income=(3/40)*100=7.5%

hence should be A.

(See the housekeeping supplies of retirees .See the first graph .)

Tabman, I am still looking at the 2nd problem.

Look at this picture me and a co-worker who is an Aerospace Engineer from Texas A&M made:

http://img523.imageshack.us/img523/8519/paraexee8.jpg

If you draw a line out from C all the way down, that line represents the height of the Parallelogram. It also forms a Right Triangle. Now, based on the theories we know about Right Triangles, the Hypotenuse, which is the side opposite the Right Angle is the largest side is the biggest side. So H has to be less than 4 and since you know the Area = BH or Area = 6xH, you know the product will be less than 24, so B is the answer.

You do not have to know SINE/COSINE to get that problem correct and I don't think the aforementioned will even be tested on the GRE.

Here is the answer to the second question:

The table gives that 23% of the amount spent on food & household expenditures is spent on meat, poultry, seafood.

The graph gives that retirees spent 40% on food and non-food items.

The non-food items in the graph that are not included in the table are Gasoline and Other fuels.

So you need to subtract the 11% that retirees spent on these 2 from 40%.

That means the retiree spends 29% of his income on food & household expenditures.

23% of 29% is 6.67 so 7 is the answer.

You can also do it this way.

From the table, retirees spent 66% of their food and household expenditures on food at home.

23% of the food and household expenditures was spent on meat, poultry, & seafood.

So 35%, or approx. 1/3, of their food at home was spent on meat, p & s.

From the graph 19% of their total income was spent on food at home. 1/3 of that is 6.33 or approx. 7%.
