B and C are close, we dont know, for sure, abt what doctors knew and what the dont! If they mistook endometriosis for cramps or vice versa. But if we look closely then the presence of "commonly" may help us deciding what the doctors mistook. Women must be "commonly" complaining abt the cramps and doctors must have misunderstood it to be "endometriosis". I'm sure women cant be complaining about "endometriosis" (higly unlikely that most of the women knew this particular term). The presence of "endometriosis" as a term implies that doctors must be familiar (or even may have coined this term) abt the conditions (symptoms) and they considered the cramps similar to "endometriosis" (similar symptoms or something). So they "mistook the cramps for endometriosis". I somewhat agree with adlakha, but there is more room for discussion! I'll agree with the OA (though i'm still a but confused).
