What are your summer goals?

For Liberty

Recommended Posts

I thought this may be a cool topic to discuss with other highly motivated students of economics.

Without further ado, what are your goals for the summer? What things do you want to learn, what books do you want to read, how are you going to become a better economist, etc. ?

I'll start things off:

-Learn real analysis; get through Rudin.

-Go through Alvin Roth's experimental econ lecture notes online.

-Knock out the GRE.

-Read a Monetary History of the United States.

-Finish my econ thesis and math thesis.

-Narrow my list of grad schools I'll apply to.

-Begin working on my NSF app.

-Learn the ways of the "mathemagician" Arthur Benjamin.

-Silly, but know every Nobel Prize winner, what year they won, and understand contributions to economics.

-Oh yeah, relax and enjoy a few beers.

I look forward to everyone's responses.

I think those may be incompatible.

I actually had something similar in mind, but I was thinking of going by a list of the most cited journal articles. I will probably skip some of the econometric ones, though, since there does seem to be a bit of a bias towards technical econometric papers in the list I found.

I will be:

-Taking a game theory course this summer, so I'm going to focus on learning as much Game Theory as I can in the next 6 weeks.

-Doing research with the health economist and chief scientist at a major health insurance provider .

-Reading through a few journal articles per week to narrow my senior thesis idea and eventually begin a lit review.

-Reading for leisure nightly.

-Relaxing on the weekends: hanging out with friends, drinking beer, enjoying the summer.

- read papers

- do a bit of review on first-year micro i took this year

For Liberty, do you have a link to the NSF application? I wasn't aware that it is up and that we can start reviewing it / thinking about how to fill it out.

- Take the GRE

- Successfully complete 3 classes: advanced calculus, linear algebra, and differential equations

- Finish some research with a professor

- Formalize ideas for undergraduate thesis

- Start the statement of purpose for various schools

I am stuck at my university this summer in a (college town), for school and working. Don't know what else I could do... any suggestions? I'm a couple credits away from being a junior. I was looking at NSF research programs for next summer for undergrads, since my school doesnt offer any econ research... idk I am so unfamiliar with nsf and which ones to apply to. :(

-Learn to ride a bicycle

-Learn LaTex (probably just LyX)

-Make a good dent in my stack of books

-Play through a bit of my backlog of video games (and get a crazy high rank in Halo)

-Relax, etc.

I like this list. Make sure you actually follow through on the first one; I've heard riding a bike to get around is a must in Palo Alto.
