  1. COngratulations!!! Indeed, you have been admitted to Tufts University. Great school. And 20% tuition assistance doesn't hurt either. The department has approved your application, however, the graduate school @ Tufts probably has to finalize all the decisions. You should receive an official letter soon[banana]:D Good Luck!!!
  2. Is the answer B-13? I used lil logic. 2^256 is going to be an even number, so I just tried to divide 2^6 by 17. And came up with 13
  3. I think the answer should be "D" because Y can be any number. We know what "x" can be (9, 12, 15, 18, 21...) But, "Y" can be 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, ..... So, just plug in the number.
  4. Carly, I was actually recruited out of college by several government services, but I need couple of more years so that my parents meet the security requirement. Naturally, I decided it was the perfect time to go back to school because I always had inclination to pursue a higher education. Besides, yes, many government agencies are generous when it comes to tutition and stipend, but they told me that if I do deicde to work for the government after graduate school, they will pay off most, if not all of my loans (even undergraduate loans). In essence, whether I start working now or after graduate school, I don't think I'll be getting the short end of the stick. For the competition for IR schools, it definitely has become notoriously difficult to gain an admission. This is just my opinion, but I think two events triggered such spate in IR programs. First, the events of 9/11/01--inspired many individuals to pursue a career in the field of IR. I would probably assume that applications from U.S. candidate shot up after the incident. Second, the economy surely had undeniable impact of the number of applicants. I'm sure the economy triggered college graduates to go back to school beccause they simply can't get a job! Now, having said that, there are many individuals who just apply to see where they stand. So, many of the candidates don't have the work-experience, international experience, and most importantly, a definite goal and desire to pursue a higher education. Their ambivalence will definitely transpire through the application. Since your first choice is SIPA, I have an interesting stats. about the Columbia's graudate school admissions in Excel(how many applied/admitted/rejected/enrolled,etc). It's very comprehensive. If you like to see them, e-mail me at toshibauser011@yahoo.com. Bye
  5. Carly, Thank you very much for your input. After I post, I didn't expect much replies since many on this forum are engineering and computer major. Anyway, good to hear from someone who has similar interests. :) Like engineering, therer are slew of speific area of concentration. Lately, I have met and networked with many individuals who are interested in international economics. However, my area of concentration is in international security/national security. That's why I decided to conduct some relevant research and study in terrorism and the Middle East. In addition, I completed my honors thesis on international terrorism. There are several areas I would like to pursue my career after graduate school (PhD). I'm little relucant to say what organizations they are, but all of them are in the government sector. As far as your recommendations to schools such as GW and American, I was in the stages of pondering whether I should apply there or not. I would love to attend GW if I get in with a sumptuous financial aid. I don't mean to sound like a pessismist, but I just don't feel confident about the whole process sine the competition has increasingly become stiff for IR schools in recent years. Honestly, who wouldn't want to attend top tier IR schools such as JHU, Columbia, Tufts? I will exhaust my bank account and apply to those schools, but I'm really not keeping my hopes up. Like you suggested, I check out the site and came across Univ. of Pitts. They seem to have a program exactly tailored to my needs... As far as languages, I read, write, and speak Korean and Spanish. My parents are also teaching me Chinese. Since my parents were educated using Chinese characters (in Korea), they seem to know a lot about their language. Anyway, thank you very much for your input. Carly, what area are you intrested in? You seem to know a lot about schools. It'll be nice to keep in touch with you!!:D Good luck with your admissions process!!
  6. Hey guys, Here is my current situation. I'm in the process of finalizing my applications for a master's degree in international relations/affairs. Most of the applcations are due in January. In addition, I will be applying to about 10 schools. I know most of you in the forum are either comp. sci, engineering, and business majors, however, if there is anybody out there who has a slight or a lot of knowledge about IR schools, please help me with the selection of the schools. I really don't have much of money, so I really need to husband my resources, and would like to avoid spending needless application fees where my chances of acceptance are small to nil. I graduated from a school in New York City with an honors in International Relations and History. However, my cum. GPA is not good. It is 3.2. Well, I was fortunate to graduate with honors because of my relevant GPA in the majors and upper division courses. Plus, I had couple of extra-curricular such as honor society, etc... After school, I took about 5-6 months traveling throughout Europe and Asia and gained some international experience (I have gone abroad several times before). After the trip, I was hired as a research assistant for a respected think tanks in NYC and Washington, D.C. conducting Middle East and international terrorism studies (received an award). Yes, I don't have extensive work-experiece and only been out of school for a year. One more thing, besides Englsih, I speak two other laguages with fluency. As far as my GRE scores, they are not that good. I received 550V, 710Q, and AWA-still waiting. However, my recommendation letters are very good. One of the reco. letters from a professor who I've worked with for four years and is recognize person in the field. The other is from an ambassador to Denmark (former professor),and the final letter is from my boss at the terrorism think-tank (also a professor). Two of the recommenders even gave me a copy of the letter even though I waived all my rights to review the letters. That's about it. It is true that I want to go to the best IR school. However, my funds and resources are very limited, so I think it'll come down to which school gives me the most aid. To me, it really doesn't matter where I go; as long as I do what I like to do! Now, can anyone recommed me schools? Cheaper the better, or should I say, what schools do I stand a chance???? Thanks guys!!
  7. Thank a lot guys, and wish you the best. Yes, I put a lot into the exam and am content with the scores. Indeed,I have a lot of things to be thankful for this Christmas. To answer you question Carly, most of the IR schools are very elsuive to let the students know what their GRE scores are. However, I'll tell you this. If you go to American University (Good IR school, but not the best), they say that a "successful" applicants have mid-to-high 600 in both sections. Now, that doesnt mean that they don't accept students with lower scores. However, it is kind of depressing to find out that second rated program has such a high standards... BTW, I don't know what area you plan to concetrate on, but for my concentration (interntional security), Georgetown "claims" that their students also received in the high 600 on both sections. If you have the scores, bravo:D Let me also stress that IR schools value, even require relevant work-experience. Besides GPA and GRE IR schools are also finicky about many how languages you speak, international experience, and recommendation. I could only imagine the stats. for Kennedy, SAIS (johns hopkins), and SIPA (Columbia). I'm pretty sure their stats. are similar to Georgetown... Good luck with your admissions process!!!
  8. Thanks a lot guys. I wish all receive a great scores too. You know what. I do need to relax. =) I decided not to worry too much about the score and take the exam with confidence... Again, Good Luck to All
  9. Hey guys, Some ppl on this forum probably recognize my sn. My exam is on this wednesday. I'm really getting the jitters. I don't think I've been this nervous about academics in my life. I guess I adequately prepared for the exam (2 months). But, maybe I'm just putting too much pressure on myself knowing that a good score can carry me far in terms of admissions. Anyway, I just wanted to let out some steam! If there is anyone taking their exam next week, good luck!! Bye
  10. yes, it is B. Look it at carefully. mathematicians present their idea and result... dictated by beauty-"aesthetics" and logic...
  11. In a problem wit the aforementioned variables, I tried to pick different sets of numbers to prove and/or debunk the given equations. Thank goodness it worked to my favor. And yes, picking numbers can get really messy and tedious, but it gives an alternative option for the problems like this.... Bye
