  1. What the heck is your problem shoaibakram? He's just presenting his perspective. Nobody's asking you to lap up whatever he says.
  2. if you get a 4.5 on the essay, your struct-writing score will be 26. (24+26+28)/3 = 26 X 10 = 260. A 4.5 on the essay will give you 260. All the best.
  3. I dont know if you can contact them via e-mail. I was also getting anxious and was planning to call ETS. Check out their website, I'm sure find the e-mail address.
  4. Hi folks, Got my score report today. 280 :) with 4.5 essay . Mamu, essay mey vaat lag gayi ! ! (thats Hindi for 'I screwed up in the essay section'). I was expecting this because my rhetoric for the essay was bull**it. The grammar and senctence formation were good enough, so I guess that saved my arse. The topic was really stupid - 'people remember special gifts they receive - why?'. Does one have to write a friggin essay on this? Anyway, test takers, remember this - a good essay = CONTENT + PRESENTATION. Listening is also an important section in the GRE. Get used to the standard American accent(s) used in the powerprep tests. Good luck magicians.
  5. Oct 31, and mine hasn't arrived either.
  6. I didnt specify the department when I took the GRE, only the institutions. I wasnt sure whether each college had a computer science department. What do I do? Shoild I request ETS report scores ONLY to the dept. since the scores have already been sent to admissions office?
  7. As derrex said, the old analytical section was the best. It truly measured the test taker's logical reasoning. Dunno why ETS chaged the pattern.
  8. Well, Analytical Writing IS the most challenging section in the GRE(imho). This is because Verbal is donkey's work (cramming hundreds of words) and quant is basic math. The professor has a point.
  9. Yes, the dummy section still exists. It appears at the end of the test and is usually the 'analyze the argument' section. Kaplan's CD's are very very useful. Barron's book is reliable. I would suggest a combination of these two.
  10. Hello Alex Covoy, it's nice to hear from you. Your TOEFL score is good enough for almost all American Universities. Most have a minimum requirement of 213. About the GRE, one can understand that you dont have the convenience of a nearby test centre, unlike most of us urban lazy-bums. Also there are quite a few universities that do not require the GRE. However, not taking the GRE would complicate your admission. I suggest you take it.
  11. Hi all, please help me with my list of universities - I've considered 4. 1) U Mich, Ann Arbor (Lofty, but I'm hopeful) 2) Bowling Green State University, Ohio 3) University of Cincinatti 4) NJIT My scores - GRE 1480/1600 - Q790, V690, analytical awaited TOEFL 237-297 (expecting around 280) B.E. Computers, Mumbai University with GPA of around 3.4 H.S.C (12th) - 85.5 % aggregate (Topper - 91%) Thanks in advance :)
  12. that's good to know, thanks and all the very best SK !! Also a HAPPPPPPPPPPY DIWALI TO ALL TEST MAGICIANS !!!!
  13. Hey Milith, Only the really and I mean REALLY good universities have their deadlines in mid November and mid December(Moreover, these are deadlines for financial aid consideration, not admission). Most fairly good universities have their deadlines in early to mid February for admission AND aid. eg- U Cincinatti, BGSU, some of the SUNY colleges just to name a few. My friend's sister gave the GRE in MARCH 2002 and got admitted for Fall 2002. The point is - U STILL HAVE TIME!! :)
  14. Does anyone know the final score for 237-297 and 5.0(my estimate) on essay?
  15. Dont worry pal , my first practice scores were 660Q and 400V. The advantage of the GRE is that you can get MUCH better in a very SHORT period of time. I do believe you can cross 550 in Verbal if you retake the test. Give your self a short crash course period of about 8-10 days and just learn as many new words as you can. That's ALL I did. My verbal went from low 400 to high 600's in two weeks.
  16. Well to be honest, I didn't really prepare for the TOEFL test in the sense that I didn't learn anything new. The only thing I did was practise - the two powerprep tests. I have observed that even if you retake Practise Tests 1 and 2, you will learn something new. This is because some NEW conversations appear in the listening section. Like I said earlier, work on listening as much as possible, get acquainted with the American accent(s) used by the speakers.
  17. What's up magicians!! Gave my TOEFL today. pretty much what I expected. I think it'll be 285-290. I messed up a little in the listening section. One of those longer conversations was a darn biology lecture with a lot of techincal details. Tip for test takers - pay attention to the DETAILS DETAILS DETAILS !! I've observed that most longer conversations on some science topic include some categorization. e.g. "These animals are classified into a,b,c" or "This is done in three ways - a,b,c". There will definitely be a question on this. So pay attention to the catergorizations. Conversations on some historical event include a chronological narration of events. This is followed by a question saying "arrange the events a,b,c,d in the order they are mentioned." Unlike the ones in the science conversations, these events will be spread across the entire conversation. The first question after each reading passage is always "What is the central issue of the passage?" or "What does the author mainly focus on" etc. Look for a phrase or word that is used at the beginning of each paragraph or a majority of the paragraphs. Well that's all 4 now, all the best!!
  18. Thanks everyone!! I do know that the GRE by itself isn't a sufficient criterion. However, most Universities mention them in a conspicuous manner. The questions, well - verbal was easy, some antonyms were salubrity X unhealthfulness, pariah(outcast) x lion(celebrity), loath(reluctant) X willing. Quant was tough, some twisted word problems. Also, there were was one summation series problem involving use of 1+2+3+...N = N(N+1)/2 I would recommend a quick scan of all summation formulae. Analytical was irritating (of course this was my fault). The issue topic was simple but a royal pain in the arse. issue - "will tv and internet make tourism redudant since people can learn about exotic places from their homes" another thing that has left me scratching my head for a while - how the heck does the percentage average of a four year course get converted into GPA? Another tip - when asked to compare, for e.g. 2 raised to 3 with the SQUARE ROOT of 2 raised to 6, choose D as square root can either be +ve or -ve.
  19. A big HI to everyone at Test Magic. I've visited this forum many times and have found encouragement and hope. Just finished my GRE - 1480 (unofficial) -690 verbal & 790 quant. Do I stand a chance for admission to U Michigan - Ann Arbor ? From my experience I will definitely say DO NOT, ABSOLUTELY DO NOT ignore analytical writing. Most test-takers (including me) tend to devote the least amount of time to this section. Give equal time and effort to all three sections !! ALL THE BEST TO EVERY GRE/GMAT/TOEFL/IELTS TEST TAKER !!
