  1. You are right on the point, Stan. It's all about mental toughness. I gave GMAT this Monday (10/13) and I had a near melt down during the verbal section because I tried to guess the difficulty level of the questions I was solving. I know it sounds stupid but guessing difficulty level of questions is so difficult not to do.
  2. Essay Question: The following appeared in the editorial section of a local newspaper: “The inflow of immigrant workers into our community has put a downward pressure on wages. In fact, the average compensation of unskilled labor in our city has declined by nearly 10% over the past 5 years. Therefore, to protect our local economy, it is essential to impose a moratorium on further immigration.” Discuss how well reasoned you find this argument. Point out flaws in the argument's logic and analyze the argument's underlying assumptions. In addition, evaluate how supporting evidence is used and what evidence might counter the argument's conclusion. You may also discuss what additional evidence could be used to strengthen the argument or what changes would make the argument more logically sound. Response: The author of this argument concludes that immigration into the local community should be curbed in order to protect the local economy. This might look like a simple 'cause and effect' argument at first glance, but I believe that information that the author provides to justify his solution is incomplete and that logic that he uses to arrive at that solution is incorrect. Although the author quotes only the wages trends for the unskilled labor, he seems to infer that the immigrants are causing the wages of the entire local industry to decline. There is possibility that only that unskilled labor might be affected and putting restrictions on inflow of just that might solve the problem. Further, there is no information provided about the general state of the economy. If the economy is general is in recession, then that might be the cause of the problem. The industries in the locality might be closing or moving out which in turn might increasing unemployment. This could lead to surplus of available labor and this could be the main reason of the decrease in wages. Ironically, it’s a possibility that what author states as the cause of problem might be infact the solution. If immigration of workers with skill set that is not currently available in the local economy is encouraged then new industries might be attracted into the town. These industries might generate additional work opportunities for the local workers and thus stimulate the economy. I believe that the author needs to provide information such as the wage trend of the entire pool of local workers that is inline with scope of his conclusion. Moreover he needs to address other external factors such as state of the economy that might be playing a role before proposing the solution to stop immigration. I would conclude my analysis by stating that the argument in its current state fails to convince me.
  3. % increase would be 39.5 * 100 / 60.5 = 65 approx So ans would be D
  4. I am getting following answers 1) 1.17 2) French fries = 1.62 3) Savings for a year = 160. This matches with the answer you have provided.
  5. BTW I think that pareshpandit's solution ('for no chord, other than the diameter, can have a right angle') is a proof.
  6. I dont know the actual proof behind this, but I used the following rule 1) Angle formed by an tangent and chord and having its vertex on the circle. Tangent Chord Angle = Intercepted Arc 2) Angle Formed Inside of a Circle by Two Intersecting Chords Angle Formed Inside by Two Chords = Sum of Intercepted Arcs 3) Angle Formed Outside of a Circle by Two Intersecting Chords Angle Formed Outside = Difference of Intercepted Arcs (Larger Arc - Smaller Arc) HTH
  7. Angle ABD = 90 and A,B,C,D lie on circle. Therefore arc ACD = 2 (Angle ABD) = 180 So AD is a diameter. Don't know if you are looking for this kind of explanation...
  8. Ans : B i.e. 3 Assume each machine can complete job in x days. Therefore 6( 1/x) = (1/12) x = 72 i.e. each machine can complete job in 72 days working alone. Lets assume y machines can complete job in 8 days. So y(1/72) = (1/8) y = 9 Addition machines required = 9 - 6 = 3
  9. Wow... A study group is just what I wanted. I am definitely IN. I am planning to appear for GMAT sometime in early April. Some material I am planning to use - Kaplan Premier Program - Kaplan 800 - OG 11 - GMAT prep tests - Manhattan SC Guide Suggestions for any other material are most welcome. Currently I am trying to fit all of this in a 14 week study plan...
  10. Amazing Score !!! Congrats. Any specific tips w.r.t Quant section? How was the difficulty level compared to the problems you practiced from OG/GMAC Paper tests?
  11. hey pal...ur story is so similar to mine.. Best luck for apps...
  12. I would also like to know the same...:)
  13. Amazing score... Congrats.
  14. Hi hitzs, The main difference between GMATprep test and the real thing (that I felt) is that in GMATprep there are some sitters esp in Quant section interspersed with the tough ones...in real GMAT hard bin questions kept coming one after another...no sitters. This cost me time because I made every effort to solve them correctly. I might have defn made some mistakes though, plus I had to randomly guess last 3~4 Qs. I feel this ultimately led to a score of 47 in quant. Also in verbal section I had to hurry up in last 10 mins. I won't say that difficulty level of Qs in real GMAT is higher than those in GMATprep, but I would defn suggest completing each section in GMATprep in 70 mins instead of in 75 mins... Hope this helps.
  15. I feel that 7Th June must have been just a bad day...U certainly deserve much more than that... Will be looking foward to read another debrief from u in 'Just Finished My GMAT' forum...:)
  16. Guys, Thanks for the encouraging words…really felt better to know that.:) Herz my SOWT analysis. Things which I think, I did correctly 1)I came across Test Magic in an early phase of my preparation…so gained lot … really want to thank all the people out there…This site ROCKS!!! 2)Learnt (by heart…well …almost) SC notes of Spidey and Saahil. For refreshing my GMAT quant skills, I used notes by piyusht. 3)As advised by people here, solved all exercises under timed conditions and simulated GMAT like conditions during GMATprep test. That I missed out on last 3~4 questions in each section is another story.:( 4)Had all my Math basics right…knew tables, squares, inverses…etc. This though is not needed, helps a lot in solving math problems 5)After reading Ursula’s post, I visualized the test scenario each day for past one week. Had visited the test center last week and spent almost an hour n a half there….so had a very good idea about the place….also merlinacious had told me in detail abt his test experience. I had taken a ‘print screen’ of the result page of the GMATPrep test in which I had scored 760 and I used to see it 2 ~3 times a day. These things might seem crazy but it really helped me keep my cool today…. Things where I could have improved 1)Should have paid more attention to speed as much I did for accuracy… Cant overstate the importance of speed…burnt my fingers today. 2)Should have participated more in day-to-day discussions on forums…I just read the posts and procrastinated in replying. 3)Spent less time in office in past 2 months…but can tat be avoided??:hmm: My job is taxing n’ I used to be reach home around 9Pm each day…but nonetheless attempted to study for 1~2 hrs. Balancing work and GMAT was difficult… 4)Should have begun searching for Manhattan SC guide a little earlier… really regretted not going through it when I read about the strong recommendations for the book. Besides I had CRs and RCs under control…SCs were the only thing in which I was lacking. Well…That’s all what I think of right now. I had almost entirely shaped up my study strategies by reading posts on this forum…so nothing original on that front. PS: Pls excuse me for my sloppy grammar…am completely exhausted and I have just enough energy to pen down my thoughts.
  17. Ur right bungholio....I will defn have a look at the app process before retake...in anycase I cant re-appear for next 1 month. I believe that its better to have a stellar score or a low score than a mediocre one...it makes the decision making process very clear. Right now I am feeling like Tom Hanks in the movie 'The Terminal'...stuck in transit. :p
  18. This is SO true....I experienced this first hand today. Even though I never did that before, I couldnt stop myself from rechecking my answers on the test day....n this messed up my scores.
  19. Hi People, Just back from my GMAT…am a lil disappointed with the scores. Quant : 47 : 82%tile Verbal : 39 : 89%tile Total : 700 : 93%tile I felt that the real GMAT was much more exhausting than my practice tests even though I had tried to simulate GMAT environment (during practice tests) as much as I could. I think that in GMAT prep tests u get some breathing space…as in a couple of hard questions are followed by easier ones, saving both time and effort. But in the real thing the hard question kept coming and coming and coming. In both quant and in verbal, I had to randomly guess last 3~4 questions n’ I think that’s what killed my scores. Well… my GMATprep scores were as follows Test 1: 760 Test 2: 730. I used Kaplan 2006, Kaplan 800 and OG 11th edition in addition to Test Magic for preparing…desperately wanted to include Manhattan GMAT SC guide in my prep, but couldn’t get a copy in time. I am currently contemplating whether I should give GMAT once more. Any suggestions/advices/questions are most welcome. Thanks, Atlantis PS: Herz my profile in case it would help you to advice me better 2 ½ yrs experience in Top Indian IT company Computer Engineering degree…with average acads. I am hopeful that I will get 1 year abroad (US) work-ex before I apply.
  20. hi manu...Tats an awesome score and a v good debrief...all I can say is  Do u think apart from kaplan and OG, something extra needs to be done for Math? Also did you find the length of SCs in actual GMAT is longer than what we find in OG and TestMagic? I got tat impression from some prev debriefs.
  21. Car owners who inflate their tires properly can substantially boost their vehicle's fuel efficiency, since th eincrease in car-road friction can waste up to five percent of car fuel by underinflation. I find usage of 'their'(in bold) a little ambigious...seems to refer car owners instead of vehicle. I feel the same problem is present in the correct choice also. Because up to five percent of a car's fuel are wasted through the increases in car-road friction when the tires are underinflated, car owners properly inflating tires can substantially boost their fuel efficiency. 'their' should refer vehicle, right? Can someone throw more light on this...
  22. Ans is D... I believe that 'includes' makes choices A and B wrong. Choice C correctly uses 'which include'...but its not parallel.
  23. C. I think option E says water is a type of a Resource management problem. To bring out the correct meaning E should have been Resource management problems, including that of water.
  24. IMO E for its clarity. Is one of the reasons choice B is wrong is because it uses 'have been approved' i.e present perfect instead of a past perfect tense? (B) Promotions, retirements, and other actions which have been approved at the May meeting of the board of directors along with deaths, with be reported in the July 15 issue of the company paper.
