  1. I am not sure if only the computer looks at it. 790Q and 6.0 AWA look really good. I would say having 800Q would be better. But, I was in a similar situation this fall and my profs told me that there is a trade-off. Here it is: If you took GRE once and got 790Q, then it's OK. If you took GRE twice and scored 790Q on both of the tests, then it shows that you are a 790Q person but not 800Q. So, if you are sure that you will score 800Q, you may take the risk, if not, don't bother. I know that even 760Q worked for Northwestern this year (a friend of mine).
  2. Give them a call. That was how I learned about my admission result. Good luck!
  3. I am no expert about programs in UK. But I feel that staying in academics for 2 years will be helpful for the future. I agree that MA programs in US usually prepare for the sector, but if you work a lot and show the profs that you are heading for PhD, then you will surely be placed in a good PhD program afterwards. So, if the two chances are NYU and BU, then I would choose NYU (if financially OK) and do my best. You may do very well and have strong LORs from the top economists at NYU. Good luck :)
  4. definitely! :) btw, what are doing for housing?
  5. I have a question. Suppose you had your ug in a high rank US program (1-15), and you did good. Don't you have the chance to stay at that university and continue with PhD? I am asking this because I did not see anybody doing this.
  6. Same here...I did not hear from UIUC. I definitely want my money back!
  7. Just retake the course and show that you can do it. Replacing it with some other course will not help you I guess. Plus, taking a course the second time increases chances of success. I took a mathematical economics course which covered real analysis and got A(My dept did not allow students take real analysis from other depts). I believe that the way to succeed in analysis is to get used to the math language as soon as possible and solve lots of questions in order to get used to abstract thinking. You did it once but failed it, which I think is OK, give yourself a second shoot and make it an A. Then you can explain the F in your SOP. Losing a year in this admission process is not important. I wish I had waited another year and applied next year with my thesis completed and new GRE scores. I am sure I could do better. Do anything that increase your chances into top programs. Name of the institution does matter and losing a year or two at this stage of time is NOT important at all. Good luck...
  8. Thank you midori :) Wisconsin or Upenn, both perfect!
  9. Hey I am definitely in. In addition to the forum threads, I had wonderful time with private messages. I learned a lot here and want to continue being in touch with this very bright community. Nice idea!
  10. Since you were away from school for some time (right?), I would suggest that you go with option2 and do masters first. This would look much better on paper than 4-5 math courses. Moreover m.a. for two years will be a good preparation for the phd. If you are really good, then you can raise your GPA and get really good LORs. Good luck...
  11. GT does not stand for Georgetown...All those profs are at UMD. Schelling is there of course but that is no good for any one...
  12. Hey, You still have couple of days. Relax. Did you tell those two schools that you have to tell about your decision to another school? If you didn't I think you should do so. I you already did, then wait untill April 14th and then say yes to your 3rd choice. Btw, a friend of mine got admitted to her 1st choice on April 14th last year. Wish you luck... PS: I have not replied to my schools yet. I am planning to do so on April 14th, cause I am still undecided which one to go(out of UMD and PSU)...
  13. Hey friends, I know I mentioned about my situation in some other threads. I know some of you got bored of me. But, this is my last week to decide. I still need some advice. Those bored of me, please take my apologies. Those who may still vote, thank you for sharing your thoughts with me. Any comments are welcome... "In terms of quality of the program, which school do you think is better? PSU or UMD?" I forgot to mention the most important thing: This question is for Econ PhD...Where is my brain???
  14. NYU :My love, you will always be on my mind... Cornell : I don't get your point baby!!! Rochester, UMN, Caltech: I wish I wish... PSU and UMD: Tell me guys which one of you will make me happier?
  15. Think about this. If she were in your situation, what would she do? 2 years ago I applied to the PhD programs and if I were admitted I was ready to leave him (my almost fiance) and go. I was rejected everywhere. One year later we broke up. My point is that if you guys are fortuned to break up, it will happen one way or the other. But if you go for your dream and at the end of say, one year, both of you agree that you cannot do without each other, then you will find a solution. I have friends who kept their relationship long-distance for some time and then eventually got together again. Don't panic!
  16. I have not turned down PSU. I am just trying to choose between UMD and PSU.
  17. Hey friends, I was wondering who have decided to go to PennState for economics phd. It would be wonderful if those going there could share insight. I am sure you guys read before that I am trying to choose between UMD and PSU. I need some more help...:( PS: Thank you to all who shared their thoughts with me about UMD and PSU so far... Noone? :( Nobody is going to PSU? :(
  18. Hey midori, It was me :) Thanks for your reply. Congrats for Wisconsin!
  19. Nothing has changed? Could you please post the rankings here? Especially UMD and PSU? :)
  20. Could someone please post the latest economics PhD rankings? tnx :)
  21. This list is disappointing...I guess this is why they do not announce the placements on the web site. The schools with similar rank to UMD have better placements, what is wrong with UMD? Btw, thank you very much for sharing the information...
  22. Hey guys, If you are visiting the school today, please please ask them about their recent placements... Tnx :)
