  3. 2 The following appeared in a letter sent by a committee of homeowners from the Deerhaven Acres to all homeowners in Deerhaven Acres. "Seven years ago, homeowners in nearby Brookville community adopted a set of restrictions on how the community's yards should be landscaped and what colors the exteriors of homes should be painted. Since then, average property values have tripled in Brookville. In order to raise property values in Deerhaven Acres, we should adopt our own set of restrictions on landscaping and housepainting." The committee suggested(suggests) that all homeowners(community) of Deerhaven should put some restriction on the landscapeing and the housepainting(the exterior paints of houses) to raise their property values. They refered the neighboring community --Brookwille's restrictions as an example. However they only focused on one side of the cube(coin), there are some loopholes in the argument. First at(OF) all, as a community, its property values relies on many facts(property value at a place depneds on many aspects), the land price(propery values include land price) is the most significant. Though the two community is nearby, but it is quite possible that the land values between Brookville and Deerhaven has great gap. Maybe the former facing(HAS) a road to downtown, the convenient transportation improved the increasing of the land value(REDUNDANT), or itself(IS) located in(NEAR) a commercial area, many shops or offices are here, but the later is a pure resident area or more obscure than Brookville.(REDUNDANT) The surrounding environment should also be concerned. The one is hush, natty, has more lawnS and more excellent(better) LANDscape to appreciate, which will be more expensive.(a reason in higher propery prices) No evidence supports that the houses in the two communities are absolutely identical.(A survey of houses at the two communities would have been helpful) As a house, it's outlook is not the only ingredent THAT decides it's value. The architecture's style is good or not, the building is new or old, the nature(NATUAL) light is enough or not, the facilities(INFRASTRUCTURE) are(IS) comfortable(good) or not, all above(of these) should be considered. Most of houses in the Deerhaven community maybe need(needing) completely(redundant, remove this) repair instead of restrictions. The committee culture is an important part THAT influents(influences) the whole(redundant, remove this) community's(LOCAL) property values. When a person choise(chooses) a house for the whole family, each member's benefits(needs) should be cared for. If the atmosphere is harmony(harmonious), the residenter(residents) will get(be) more happiness(happier), which is good for children's growth. So the satisfied community culture help increasing the property value. Yet the Deerhaven committee did not analysis this point at all. (REDUNDANT REMOVE THIS) Lots of background informations(INFORMATION) is(HAS NOT BEEN CONSIDERED) negelected before they drew an reasonable conclusion. So if the Deerhaven committee wants to raise the community's property values, they should think over the outside environment and the inside situations, then make a practical plan.(about a number of other factors also)
  4. Please give a brief intro to the problem at hand at the start. The conclusion stated in the memo that production of deluxe alpaca overcoats should be resumed seems logically flawed. While a cursory glance at the reasons seem to be logically convincing a thorough review of the argument brings out some of its weaknesses. Firstly, the argument states that since the Sartorian company has a new fabric supplier so they should resume production. Is there any guarentee that they will not have the same problem that the company had with the old supplier(rewrite, its needlessly long) or if anything else goes wrong(what anything else are u talking about)? Then they will have to stop the production of overcoats again. Secondly, the argument assumes that the coat will sell very well.Just on this basis that since they have not offered an alpaca overcoat for five years and also since there major competitor no longer makes them is not good enough to say that the demand of overcoats will pent up. The argument does not give any reseach evidence to prove this .The major competitor might have started selling a different overcoat which is new in style(i think its a fibre and not a coat we r talking abt, a coat made of alpaca fibre) and better than the alpaca overcoat. What then? The company will suffer loss again.(it is never mentioned that company suffered losses earlier) Thirdly, there are other reasons as to why the coatt will sell(why the coat wont sell). There should be a survey done of the kind of coats which men today will buy and if they will even prefer the coat which was sold five-years ago.(redundant)In five years style, clothes and fashion has (might have) changed drastically. Moreover, price is just one of the small factors as to why some one will buy the alpaca overocat. How much is the price of the overcoat? Is it really that low or just a few dollars here and there? And if its so cheap then why should a customer buy a cheap product? So one can not really assume that the company profits will increase with the sale of the overcoats. (kya likhe he yeh, mujhe to kuch samajh nahin aaya) Thus the argument is not completely sound. The evidence in support of the conclusion that production of the overcoat should be resumed does little to prove that conclusion,(please reframe)since it does not address the assumption already stated.Ultimately the argument might have strengthened if the authour could have shown a survey as to what type of coats do men like currently and a research work on why the demand of overocoats will pent up and not just one reason.
  5. I wud go with chanda, ur incentive thing is not very clear. Try to reframe that. Also a anecdote, that might help in an essay--- Last yr,medical students of state of Orissa went on a strike ! Reason 'No Cheating' was put into force strictly by Orissa University Administration. And students were fighting this. Reasoning 'For the past 3 yrs we have passed by cheating only, we never needed tp study and how expecting us to study in 4th year is too tough for us and also harsh,so please allow us to cheat'.
  6. Thanks a lot chanda and vinod. I was able to pin point what was lacking in the essay, but u have surely helped me out in doing so.
  7. PLEASE REVIEW MY ESSAY......41.Such no mainstream areas of inquiry as astrology, fortune-telling, and psychic and paranormal pursuits play a vital role in society by satisfying human needs that are not addressed by mainstream science." Man's obsession to know the future and the supernatural has lead to development to a number of fields like astrology, palmistry and has also lead to a number of psychic and paranormal pursuits. I firmly believe that these methods of inquiry and pursuits satisfy a number of human desires and needs which the mainstream sciences have not been able to fulfill. Astrology is one of the mainstream areas of fortune-telling and it is clear that it does have an effect on satisfying human needs. In India, at the time of marriage the birth charts of the bride and the groom are matched so as to know whether they will be able to live happily or not which is what every couple desires. Special rites are carried out to nullify the effects of certain unfavorable planetary positions according to a individual’s natal-chart. Another example is 'Remote Viewing'. In this a person claims to have the psychic capability of seeing what is happening at some distant place while just sitting in his room.Infact, till 1994 CIA had a special 'Remote Viewing Cell' in which people with these capabilties were employed for spying purposes. Point here is, humans have inherent curiosity and tendency to find answers to every phenomenon that happens drives these sciences and activities. Main Stream Science has no way of letting a man know his fortune or answers to questions like 'Whether god exists or not ?' or 'Do humans have soul? . Conventional Science has not advanced to the level where it can quaff all human curiosity.
  8. In this ultra-modern world imbued with plastic relationships(How is this linked with issue at hand ?) the need for ethics has its due importance.I agree with the author, in part, because ethics is important for any individual to prosper in the society but at the same time i will not support that there should be a decreased emphasis on academic subjects for the sake of it.(He is just asking for a single course, will that decrease the emphasis) Before further dwelling into the discussion on "ethics" we first need to know what "ethics" mean.We can define ethics as a set of moral principles that every individual should follow for the best interests of himself and society as a whole. These principles help an individual to maintain cordial relationships with other members of the society. When we are cordial to others they would definitely try to be cordial to us.(is this the sole purpose of ethics what abt mental peace, respect, no guilt feeling) Unfortunately in today's world, people are not paying heed to these moral principles and are only chosing ways and means that would benefit them ,not caring how it effects the society around them.(are u talking specifically abt 'material benefits' do mention it then, as ppl are getting materialistic)This selfishness , every individual has to know , might help them in the beginning with a whiff of success but in the long run it has adverse effects on themselves.Because "we are society".If we donot pay our respect to the society , then it is us who have to pay for it finally.(Ethics do have an effect on society also, but i believe they also have an effect on our mind/heart/soul,dont u think so)Analogous to the age-old maxim "Save the trees and they will save you" ,if we treat our society in a good way it will reciprocate in the same. "Why ethics for students ?",one would ask.The need for teaching ethics to students early in their age (we are just discussing whether to teach or not,we r not discussing when to teach)is very important because it is in this age that whatever they have been taught makes an indelible impression on their minds. Its easy to teach a child ,the ethics he should adhere to than to teach an adult as "Its easy to bend a tree when it is a plant rather than when it grows to be a tree".Children had to be made to understand the role ethics play in the life of a man.Without ethics man is nothing more than a mere animal.(animals also do have a few ethics i suppose esp those living in groups) Also, students had to be taught the importance that ethics plays in the personality development of an individual. If it was not of ethics the world would have been long ended in chaos.Ethics is a conglomeration those principles that binds one individual to another and develops a healthy environment for the people to live. All these calls for the emphasis of having "ethics" in the academic curriculum. When it is taught to children as a subject then children will have proper exposure to its relevance in one's life. (all theory,u shud hve discussed how it wud help them by giving a few examples and points where they wud need it). But, this emphasis shouldnot be so stretched that children have to pay less attention to an academic subject for its sake.Academic subjects are as important as ethics for a child.(so if they r equal they shud get equal wtg, correct ur sentence)Without academics what will a student do , after he comes out of school with an ethics subject to his credit.Definitely , organisations do not want employees who are poor in academics to work for them.Academics is essentially the "bread-winner" for the student when he moves onto professional life and ethics teaches them how to behave in the society.(and author says atleast a course,he is not demanding too mcuh for it and ur para seems like acads shud not be compensated a bit) Therefore, we can say that placing "ethics" in an academic curriculum definetly is a positive approach but proper care has to be taken to place it in the right slot so that it doesnt affect the academics of a student."Ethics" and "Academics" are essentially like two sides of an individual, one helps to go higher in the society and another helps to behave in a correct way with our society.(again the same pt society is not the sole stuff for ethics)We have to remember that no matter how high we have reached in the society , its always ethics that we follow that gains respect for us. GUD SENTENCE CONSTRUCT AND GRAMMER BUT I AM NOT THAT SURE ABOUT THE CONTENT SOME WORK NEEDS TO BE PUT IN THEIR

  11. For first one, it is clear that the two parts will be in opposition. I am unable to explain but somehown when I read only E seemed to be fit in. Others did nt seem to make any sense at all. For the first blank itself u can eliminate (b),© and (d). Now only (a) and (e) are left, word 'obscurity' in second part can go along with 'articulated' so we have only (e) left which is the answer. U dont have something called 'conventional' meaning. U may tough have a 'indefinite' or 'precise' or 'achaic' meaning. This is easy. It says that though many findings were similar, atmospheric were nor. So what do we do for that, we chnage the intrepretation method of the results so that the two results reconciled. It cant be (A) as we are talking abt comparison of data and not how its obtained.
  12. Your View Plz.........:) The following is a recommendation from the dean at Foley College, a small liberal arts college, to the president of the college. "Since college-bound students are increasingly concerned about job prospects after graduation, Foley College should attempt to increase enrollment by promising to find its students jobs after they graduate. Many administrators feel that this strategy is a way for Foley to compete against larger and more prestigious schools and to encourage students to begin preparing for careers as soon as they enter college. Furthermore, a student who must choose a career path within his or her first year of college and who is guaranteed a job after graduation is more likely to successfully complete the coursework that will prepare him or her for the future." A good job is what everyone wants at the end of their studies. For some people it is the upshot of their effort and time spent in education. Keeping this point in view dean of Foley College has made a recommendation to the college president that they can increase enrollment by promising students a job after their graduation. Besides, this he also claims that a student who chooses a career path at the start of his or her course and is guaranteed a job is more likely to complete the coursework. The argument, though may sound convincing initially, has a number of flaws. Firstly, the dean assumes that just be giving a job guarantee the number of students enrolling at the college will increase. This assumption seems dubious as a student considers number of factors other than just a job before enrolling at an institution like Infrastructure, Faculty Quality, Funding etc. Infact some of these parameters have a much more weight age then a job assurance. For example Asian Institute of Management doesn’t have a placement cell but still its ranked highly by students because of its quality of education and infrastructure. Secondly, no mention has been made about how will the college try to provide a job to ever students ? What will be the quality ie pay, perks etc of the job ? From the memo it can be understood that the college is not exactly the best in the locality so it can be inferred that currently it will be tough for its graduates to get the best job. So even if the college guarantees a job, students might not favour joining it as they will feel that by studying at a more prestigious college they will get a better job then what the college will offer. Thirdly, the dean never gives any evidence for his argument and claim. Results from a survey carried out what students expect from a college would have made his memo more comprehensive and convincing. Besides it would have allowed the president to get a better picture. Also a comparative study of the college alone with the other colleges would have helped greatly. In all, though the argument and the conclusion made by dean has a good reasoning behind it,but it is insufficient. This is because his assuming that a job guarantee will make more students come to the college is unconvincing. Besides, he never discusses how and what types of jobs will the college provide. Also, results of a survey on students expectations and nearby colleges would have helped.
