  1. Hi, the scholarship is the Knight scholarship... it gives $20k for CS program and if i apply for MBA and go to Cornell later, it's another 20k :) I don't think I will want to do a PhD.... I'm interested in game development/graphics... i think i'm better fitted in the industry. Thanks for your reply!
  2. Hi, thanks for replying. JHU is MEngineering and NYU is MS CS. I'm still waiting for Columbia... Though I'm leaning toward Cornell b/c i get a scholarship there, it's a short program, it also becomes a disadvantage given the economy is still bad and the job prospect a year from now might not change much.... Any insightful input would be greatly appreciated! thanks
  3. Thanks to everyone's answer... now i have to decide between NYU vs. JHU vs. Cornell, and i have a scholarship from Cornell... can you give me some advice about these programs? job prospects, especially (since this economy is really bad...) thanks
  4. Hi, I just wonder what you guys think of Cornell MEngineering program? I just got accepted there and stlil waiting for others but I want to hear the strength... I want to work on graphics stuff... thanks

I"m not sure if Columbia had trouble filling quota because my class is standard - 23 people :) my classmates got into upenn/nwu/stanford/berkeley/nyu and still decided to come to Columbia
  6. This year placement is said to be better than before. The restructuring began a few years back and as far as I am concerned, the result will be shown in the coming years (the first to benefit is this year job market people). The restructuring was when a lot of new hires were coming beginning 2005 (i think) I believe that things have changed here since all the upperclassmen I talked to are generally happy. Last year there were only 5 people who were on job market. This year there are a bunch. I guess you can email Jody and ask for placement. - but i talked to one of them and she was really happy and got a lot of offers. Anyway, goldenrule knows more and will reply to you guys :)
  7. Jody meant not to ask too many questions to her b/c she's really busy. I think you'll get a packet with links to the resources in a week or so... Congrats to everyone!
  8. traditionally, they sent out acceptances first- everyone accepted with funding got the same emails, at the same time.... Good luck everyone!
  9. I think Jody always sends an email to all admitted students at once (1 for admitted with funding, as far as i know).... so once some people got an email and you dont, 99.9999% that you didnt get accepted... I have no idea how they do admissions but about fields, half of my class is interested in macro (at least 8-9 out of 23) although our stated fields in the application were not the same...so i doubt if they care a lot about the field choices...
  10. I know a friend in MIT got an internship from IMF but he's 4th year already
  11. source? i'm a student here.
  12. well supposedly the deadline for admission is this Friday.. so i guess you guys may know early next week, or even this Friday!
  13. We in Columbia live perfectly fine with the stipend.. we have enough to go out sometimes. Some of us live off campus with their friends in downtown area... of course, the stipend is not enough for the whole family whose main income is the stipend only, or to go out every night or fancy places. We are in Columbia housing and it's reasonably priced and ok enough. I don't know anyone having loans.
  14. is it a master program? and email? when did you submit your application? thanks
  15. I know 2 IMO's gold medal recipients. both of them went to polytechnique, then to Harvard and MIT for Econ PhD. so i agree with Golden Rule, it'll enhance strong applicants. I think IMO does not just reflect regular high school math. :D
  16. FYI: none of the 2nd year or 3rd year who didn't get funding at the beginning is going to get funding this year. I am sorry to say that...
  17. because there were 2 special circumstances and one just confirmed :)
  18. At Columbia, there are 23 (now). 5 females 18 males :D geographically, i think there are 5 americans and the rest are international.
  19. Professors in initial school are more supportive than you may think. As in my case, the profs that I talked to were really understanding and wrote LORs for me. I don't know how great it was but it definitely helped me this year. Also, I agree that getting good grades should be your main target. I think you will be able to move to a better program if you get straight As in all classes you take. I am not sure what TruDog means with superstar but IMHO, you need to show to the profs that write for your LORS in the initial school that you are active and want to do research. The prof that wrote to my LORs asked me to come to his office and asked me about my interest and my plan for the future. And since I had free time, I also asked him to take his RA job voluntarily and since he didn't have time, I became an RA for another professor I knew outside of class (I didn't get LORs from him though). So I think it's desirable to do well in your class, and to demonstrate to your LORS professors that you want more than what is given in the current programs and transferring is a right choice.
  20. I havent seen anywhere else that has computer as cheap as in the US :D
  21. I just voted for thinkpad and now I want to return/replace mine, which I just got 3 days ago!!! this computer became non-responsive when I just played music and installed MS Office!
  22. There is still 1 more pending for macro from Princeton to Columbia, isn't it?
