Run-on sentences are formed when 2 independent clauses are joined together. 2 Independent clauses can be joined by semi-colon, while here comma is used, and is wrong. coming to your question "and so too are modems" here "and" actually playing it's part. "and" is a conjunction and is joining the 2 clauses and that is grammatically correct.

I am lost in this one....If I look at the meaning it makes perfect sense to use "its collections" but if I go by grammar rules, I am not able to understand. the pronoun refers to the last noun, in this case the last noun before pronoun is "collectors". why should we use "its" here ?
