  1. I think ETS loves to ask these kind of questions because it has a trick or a basic concept in it. My theory is that any question that take more than 1-2 min to answer is equivalent to "you are missing the trick". They are out there to test your basic concept plus presence of mind and not hard/labor work. Try to spot trick or trap in every question u see at least that is the approach I am taking.
  2. a2=a1+c similarly a3=a1+2c, a5=a1+4c =>a1+a3+a5=>3a1+6c=27 => a1+2c=9 -----(1) a2+a4=> a1+c+a1+3c=2a1+4c or 2(a1+2c) -----(2) substituting the value for a1+2c we get 2*9=18 The trick is to convert everything into any one number with constant c.
  3. I think they are collecting all the results right now so that they can generate a percentile report later since the test is new they do not have enough data to generate percentiles. Remember these results matter most when used in percentile. So what would actually matter is what percentile u get into... just my 2 cents....
  4. I have collected few interesting mixture problems. I do not know the original answers to these but I solved them using my technique and would like to verify my answers with yours. I am including my answers in spoilers so that you don't see it right away :) 1. Mixture A is 15 percent alcohol, and mixture B is 50 percent alcohol. If the two are poured together to create a 4-gallon mixture that contains 30 percent alcohol, approximately how many gallons of mixture A are in the mixture? 2. A chemist needs to mix a 10 % acid solution with 35% acid solution to end up with 1000 milliters of a 25% acid solution. How much of each solution is needed? 3. If 3 liters of 40% orange juice and 1 liter of 50% orange juice are mixed which of the following is the percentage of orange juice in the mixture? 4. One liquid solution of 7 liters contains 40 % water. A second liquid solution of 18 liters contain 20% water. If these two solutions are mixed, what percent of the mixture is water? 5. Dr. Tik needs to make a solution that is 60% alcohol. if she has 4 liters of a solution that is 25% alcohol, how many of 80% solution will she need to add? 6. A mixture of 12 ounces of vinegar and oil is 40%n vinegar by weight. How many ounces of oil must be added to the mixtue to produce a new mixture that is only 25% vinegar? 7. Two solutions of 90% and 97% purity are mixed resulting in 21liters of mixture of 94% purity. How much is the quantity of the first solution in the resulting mixture? 8. A mixture of 20ltrs of brandy and water contains 10% water. How much water should be added to it to increase the percentage of water to 25%? 9. A cistern contains 50 liters of water. 5 litres of water is taken out of it adn replaced by wine. The process is repeated again. Find the proportion of wine and water in the resulting mixture.
  5. What are the answers? I got these. Can you please post the answers as well? Thanks... I will post my method once I see the answers.. 1. A chemist needs to mix a 10 % acid solution with 35% acid solution to end up with 1000 milliters of a 25% acid solution. How much of each solution is needed? 400, 600 2.if 3 liters of 40% orange juice and 1 liter of 50% orange juice are mixed which of the following is the percentage of orange juice in the mixture? 42.5% 3.One liquid solution of 7 liters contains 40 % water. A second liquid solution of 18 liters contain 20% water. If these two solutions are mixed, what percent of the mixture is water? 25.6% 4. Dr. Tik needs to make a solution that is 60% alcohol. if she has 4 liters of a solution that is 25% alcohol, how many of 80% solution will she need to add? 2.5 lit 5.A mixture of 12 ounces of vinegar and oil is 40%n vinegar by weight. How many ounces of oil must be added to the mixtue to produce a new mixture that is only 25% vinegar? 7.2 ounce
  6. IMO D Two reasons: 1. need singular verb "provides" 2. "support for" is correct idiom
  7. my 2 cents Yes this is the correct usage. However, if we don't follow the above given pattern and use "so as to" given below then it is wrong usage. Her debts are extreme so as to threatern the future of the company (wrong use of so as to here)
  8. I meant to say M+W=60,000x+60,000y => W = 60,000x+60,000y-M where W & M are the total salary paid to x & y number of Women and Men I think the question is saying 60K(x+y) as total salary and not just 60K as you pointed out in your second argument. 68K is the Average salary for men and 60K(x+y) as total salary for both y number of Men and x number of Women. with this I still think that the reasoning I gave leads to choice C
  9. 3 admits as members women who can prove lineal descent for singular subject which is a singular phrase "The Daughters of the American Revolution"
  10. C, OA please P(EUF)=P(E)+P(F)-P(E)*P(F) on the second thought should it be E because we don't know whether it is mutually exclusive??
  11. Why not C? 1 & 2 individual are insuff Lets assume the total salary for women is W and men is M hence the question is W/x>50,000 => W>50,000x 1) M+W=60,000(x + y) W=60,000x+60,000y-M 2) M/y=68,000 => M = 68,000y by 1&2 W=60,000x+60,000y-68,000y W=60,000x+8,000y ---- (i) since x and y are the number of men and women they are always +ve (or at the most 0) hence W can not be less than 50,000x it will always be greater than 50,000x by equation (i)
  12. Like usage is wrong here. It has to be such as which makes me think answer should be from D & E.
  13. This looks like a subjunctive verb problem because of "that ..believe" and hence I think the answer should be from B & E. I will go with B
  14. I am getting 648 Running at the same constant rate, 6 identical machines can produce a total of 270 bottles per minute. so the 1st equation goes like individual rate is x bottles per min and hence 1/x+1/x+1/x+1/x+1/x+1/x = 1/270 => 6/x = 1/270 or x = 6X270 At this rate 10 machines will produce Y bottles per minute again 1/x+1/x+1/x+1/x+1/x+1/x+1/x+1/x+1/x+1/x = 1/Y => 10/6x270 = 1/Y Y = 6x270/10 = 6x27 bottles per/minute hence in 4 minutes 6x27x4 = 648 Can someone please post the OA?? (as my answer is different from everyone maybe I am doing some obvious mistake)
  15. IMO between C & D. I will go with C concise and clear.
  16. concur with ptandon B is crisp & clear. All other choices have incorrect use of which
  17. humtum0 what is the source of this question? because I saw in one thread the OA is C http://www.www.urch.com/forums/gmat-sentence-correction/52715-school-board-2.html However I am leaning towards C too because of past tense in the first sentence "The local school board after extensive research discovered" My understanding is that sentence needs to maintain same tense.
  18. 33. A substance derived from the Madagascar periwinkle, which has proved useful in decreasing mortality among young leukemia patients, is cultivated in China as part of a program to integrate traditional herbal medicine into a contemporary system of health care. (A) A substance derived from the Madagascar periwinkle, which has proved useful in decreasing mortality among young leukemia patients, (B) A derivative, which has proved useful in decreasing mortality among young leukemia patients, of the Madagascar periwinkle, © A Madagascar periwinkle derivative, which has proved useful in decreasing mortality among young leukemia patients, (D) The Madagascar periwinkle has a derivative which has proved useful in decreasing mortality among young leukemia patients, that (E) The Madagascar periwinkle, a derivative of which has proved useful in decreasing mortality among young leukemia patients,
  19. yes Agree with A Can I explain the problem like this The sentence starts with "Although" hence it is a subordinate clause and we need at least one independent clause in the whole sentence. In choice A they also accelerate the destruction of the ozone layer by reacting with chlorofluorocarbons (CFC's). represents independent clause. Other choices B, C and D fails to provide independent clause as they begin with "while also" and "even though" Choice E has sentence fragment problem because of ", they act ..." and ", but they also ..." Hence choice A is the best. Any feedback on the explaination is appreciated.
  20. Agree with choice C One more thing I would like to point in choice E is "were not only able to transform the gas into a solid, but they were also able to create" here a presence of comma (",") represents a conjunction but and not correlative conjunction not only ... but also hence, the two statement from choice E doesn't seems to be standalone or equivalent statements. "Scientists were not only able to transform the gas into a solid" "they were also able to create a semiconductor similar to silicon" The conclusion can be derived is both are valid correlative conjunctions as long as X and Y are parellel. Not Only X ... But Also Y Not Only X ... But Y Can DJValentino or Legolife validate my explaination given above.
  21. IMO C Comparision "as stringent as those for" seems to be correct in option C.
  22. A, C, D are out because of present tense verb "take" However I am sort of confused between B and E. For some reason I am not convinced with the Independent clause of B "the Oxford English Dictionary was Born" Can some one please explain between option B & E IMO E
  23. A,B,C are out because of spins and were. Out of D and E I would choose D for brevity. E also has "result of" idiom which I think is correct but D seems more concise. IMO D
