  4. OA is E I had chosen C as well, but narda is right (see his/her explanation), this is a meaning thing.
  5. OA is B Yeah Parallelism and comparisson (See ihsuw explanation) Thanks for the replies guys.
  6. Historians have long debated whether the spectacular rise and fall of Napoleon in the decades after the French Revolution was the necessary outcome of the political vacuum having been created by the toppled monarchy. a) was the necessary outcome of the political vacuum having been created by the toppled monarchy b) was the necessary outcome of the political vacuum created by toppling the monarchy c) were the necessary outcomes of the political vacuum that the toppled monarchy created d) was the necessary outcome of the political vacuum created from toppling the monarchy e) were the necessary outcomes of the political vacuum created by the toppling of the monarchy I'll post the OA after few responses...thanks!
  7. Researchers have discovered a new species of sparrow that lives only in cypress groves, almost wholly dependent on the berries of a certain type of vine that grows on cypress trees and whose coloring is completely different from all other sparrows. a) that lives only in cypress groves, almost wholly dependent on the berries of a certain type of vine that grows in cypress trees and whose coloring is completely different from b) that lives only in cypress groves, is almost wholly dependent on the berries of a certain type of vine that grows on cypress trees, and has coloring completely different from that of c) living only in cypress groves, is almost wholly dependent on the berries of a certain type of vine that grows on cypress trees, and whose coloring is completely different from d) that lives only in cypress groves, almost wholly dependent on the berries of a certain type of vine that grows on cypress trees, and whose coloring is completely different from that of e) living only in cypress groves, depending almost wholly on the berries of a certain type of vine that grows on cypress trees, and having coloring completely different than
  8. Another and simpler approach that get rid of the absolute value is squaring both sides of the equation. If we square (1), we can remove the bars because the square of something is always positive so: (1) (|x + 1|)^2 = (2|x - 1|)^2 x^2+2x+1=4x^2- 10x +3 x=1/3, x=3 --> NOT SUF (2) x3 --> NOT SUF (1)+(2) --> SUF ©
  9. I agree with A. The rest of choices are too broad or can not be infered from the premises.
  10. oh man I took about 2 mins too...the above one is a great and very simple approach! .. Sometimes we just need to get out of the box and think a bit more.
  11. There is something wrong on this question. 2x/y is integer and prime, as the stem says, and it's also a multiple of 2 or even number. The only even prime number I know is 2, but the stem also says it's greater than 2.. So an even integer that is prime and greater than 2??...doesn't make sense.
  12. ok, chess is a game of two so let's divide the tournament in rounds of 2-people games: round1: 431/2 = 215 games + 1 player remains round2: 216/2 = 108 games (included the remaining of the first round) round3: 108/2 = 54 games round4: 54/2 = 27 games round5: 27/2 = 13 games + 1 player remains round6: 14/2 = 7 games (Included the remain of the previous round) round7: 7/2 = 3 games + 1 player remains round8: 4 /2 = 2 games (Included remain of previous round) round9: 2/2 = 1 game Sum games = 215+108+54+27+13+7+3+2+1 = 430
  13. ok, chess is a game of two so let's divide the tournament in rounds of 2-people games: round1: 431/2 = 215 games + 1 player remains round2: 216/2 = 108 games (included the remaining of the first round) round3: 108/2 = 54 games round4: 54/2 = 27 games round5: 27/2 = 13 games + 1 player remains round6: 14/2 = 7 games (Included the remain of the previous round) round7: 7/2 = 3 games + 1 player remains round8: 4 /2 = 2 games (Included remain of previous round) round9: 2/2 = 1 game Sum games = 215+108+54+27+13+7+3+2+1 = 430
  14. I vote for C though It's a little confusing: The idea is to compare: % students in England that take exam in college vs % students in Northern Ireland that take exam in college For example choice B Compare % students taking the exam in college vs % students taking the exam in Northern Ireland...no sense, so out. For similar reasons I ruled out choices A and E. Not sure but it sounds to me like choices that contain "In England, ....." subordinate the sentence that follows and changes the meaning in the comparisson. As if everything happened in England. Between C and D, the comparison in C sounds better. Hope some expert can jump on this one. So what's the OA?
  15. Hi Bob, Would you please elaborate on this? Regardless of the original underlined portion, how well will the follow sentence be?: The effectiveness of many antibiotics is declining because of their overuse, causing bacteria to develop resistance to the drugs. Thanks!
  16. Are you sure the values in the stem are 512 and 513?. It looks more like 5^12 and 5^13. Assuming these two values, we are in front of an aritmetic serie. So: xn = x1 + d*(n-1), where xn is the n term and x1 is the first term. x8 = x1 + 7d (n=8) Let's identify terms: x8 = H = 5^13 x1 = A d = 5^13 - 5^12 = 4*5^12 Replacing terms: 5^13= A + 28*5^12 => A = -23*5^12 (choice B)
  17. 360 + 0.06 (S-1000) = 0.08 S => S=15000
  18. P(at least 2 hits) = P(2 hits or 3 hits) = P(2 hits) + P(3 hits) P(2 hits) = P(p, q, not r) + P(p, not q, r) + P(not p, q, r) P(3 hits) = P(p,q,r) Resolving: P(2 hits) = 4/5*3/4*1/5 + 4/5*2/3*1/4+3/4*2/3*1/5 = 13/30 P(3 hits) = 4/5*3/4*2/3 = 2/5 Then: P(At least 2 hits ) = 13/30 + 2/5 = 25/30 (answer) Is there an OA?
  19. If choice C had 'and' connector at the begining of the sentence, it would sound better. So I'd rule out C and keep E as well. The other choices don't use the idiom correclty. So x That y
  20. Idiom: Not only X but also Y Also, X needs to be parallel to Y. C
  21. A,C and D are out because the incorrect use of "which". E is redundant and wordy. "December" doesn't need to be mentioned twice. So B wins for me as well
  22. I go with B If we use like in the sentence, we are saying that the cuts were done in compensation areas that are SIMILAR to those mentioned. like is used for similarities, not to list examples. 'Such as' should be used to list examples of something. So - D and E are out. - In choice C, 'those' is not necessary... wordy. My choice is B
  23. E makes more sense than C. The choices say: ....helped create what had become known as the Underground Railroad...... ....helped create what would become known as the Underground Railroad.... He actually helped create something that later would become known as the underground.. This creation could not be known before being created. So E is better. Also, the rule is that past perfect should be used only when two different points in the past are involved.
  24. I'm getting D: PQR=y PRQ=z PRS=x Since PSR=90 then SPR=90-x 1) QPR=30: Internal angles of triangle PQS: 30+90-x+90+y=180 --> x=y+30 --> Then x will be always 30 degrees greater than y --> SUFFICIENT 2) y+z=150: From triangle PQR, angle QPR=30 (180-150) Surprise..same condition as 1) then we'll conclude the same x=y+30 --> SUFFICIENT
