I would go for E. B and C change the meaning and hence ruled out. D is in past tense and hence doesnt fit here. (position is more of) Between A and E, I picked E because it made more sense as a whole sentence. The fact (hidden) that the new managing editor rose from X to Y is more of a landmark in the industry than the fact (hidden) that she is a woman.
