  1. Hi everyone, Well, the answer is [pi*sqrt (3)] / 6. Sorry for the confusion. I meant to say that sqrt(3) represents "square root of 3". Anyway, the way I solved it (that is, the LONG way) is that I split the hexagon into two triangles and one rectangle in the middle. I then took the triangles to be 30-60-90, and added up the areas of the triangles and the rectangle, and took the ratio of that with the area of the circle. I did end up getting the answer. Tina
  2. hi ksan, That's pretty weird, huh? I would have thought that if B) were true, then A) would be also. What do you think? Tina
  3. hi McKinsey, Which mini-test are you referring to? Did you mean the Princeton Review online tester? Tina
  4. Hi everyone, I found this question on the PR online tester. It took me a while to figure this one out. I was wondering if there is a shorter way: :shy: In the figure above, a circle is inscribed in a hexagon (i.e. 6 equal-sided polygon) in which all the sides are equal. If r is the radius of the circle, what is the ratio of the area of the circle to the area of the hexagon? Ans: [pi*sqrt (3)] / 6 sqrt(3) = square root of 3 Thanks. Tina P.S. I hope the description would suffice. There was a diagram given, but for some reason, I couldn't paste it on here.
  5. hi ccll11, Grazing is feeding on grass or pasture, e.g. a cow or horse grazes in a field; foragers search for food. Say the foragers are horses. They find grass and feed on them. Hi eagle, I think for Q2, the answer is C. Just as foragers feed on the food they find, gardeners pull out the weeds they find. Does this make sense? Tina
  6. hi Vinay, "On the inside edge" means that the border of the land is untillable: (1000 x 20) + (1000 x 20) + (2000 x20) + (2000 x 20) = 120,000 ft squared Then there's another untillable part that cuts the field into two squares: 30 x 1000 = 30,000 ft. squared Total untillable land = 30,000 + 120,000 = 150,000 ft. squared Total land = 2000 x 1000 = 2,000,000 ft. sq % tillable land = (Total land - untillable land) / Total land = (2000,000 - 150,000) / 2000,000 x 100% = 92.5% Hence, 93% Btw, Vinay, are these questions from the 800score tests? Tina
  7. hi vinay, There really isn't a formula for question 2. Let p = number of ponies, and let h = the number of horses. Question says 5/6 of the ponies have horseshoes ==> (5/6)p 1/2 of those ponies with horseshoes are icelandic ==> (1/2)(5/6)p = 5/12. This means, 5 out of 12 ponies are icelandic. There can be a minimum number of 12 ponies. Now, number of horses and ponies differ by 3. Therefore, there are a minimum of 15 horses. Total number of horses and ponies = 12 + 15 = 27 Hope this helps Tina
  8. hi ksan, I think the answer is E). Since a could be 6 or -5, A and C can be eliminated immediately. I think -6 What do you think? Tina
  9. hi Kuriang, 1. When I saw him the next day, I noticed that he had had a haircut Explanation: You need to make the time order clear. The haircut action happened before another past event, so you need to put it in past perfect. 2. I have had lunch already. Explanation: This is used to show that the event has recently passed. Hope these examples help :) Tina
  10. hi Olin, D) is an extreme answer. You cannot assume that ONLY wealthy people would donate money just because they can get tax deductions. Similarly, you cannot expect ALL wealthy people to donate, either. The safe assumption is therefore A), where "at least some" wealthy people will donate. Hope this helps.:) Tina
  11. hi ksan, Wouldn't the answer just be B? The number of hours worked by the salesmen is irrelevant to the question, so that statment alone would not solve the problem. If we look at statement 2, we see a ratio of salesmen to cars. salesmen:cars = 1:10 = 14:140 Therefore, the number of different cars sold on Monday is 140. Tina
  12. Hi sujayath, If that's the case, then do you know what the answer is? Hmm, according to flounder's answer, the area IS 3.5. Tina
  13. Hi kuriang, Sorry for the late reply. It sounds right to me. The problem is that it's not in any of the choices, right? :shy: Tina
  14. hi kuriang, Well, there is definitely nothing wrong with the usage, "...or firms will face significant fines..". I just think that this doesn't go with choice B. That is, it wouldn't make sense to say, "the legislature proposed a bill requiring that all accounting records be retained by firms for at least five years, or face significant fines". Do you see what I mean? Tina
  15. hi flounder, Does Q1 have anything to do with similar triangles? What I did was draw the square CEFA (clockwise, as written). Then I put B anywhere on line AC, and point D on line CE. F runs diagonally to C and the intersection between BD and CF is G. From my drawing, it looks as if CD is the same length as BG. Hence, we can say that triangle BCD should have the same area as BCG. If we draw a line from B to CF, then we get another point, say H. This gives us a triangle similar to triangle CDG. We already know that triangle BCD = BCH = 1; therefore, area of triangle BGH must be 1/2. That's only part of the quadrilateral BGFA we are interested in. We have another trapezoid to worry about. With this, we can draw three similar triangles to that of BCD, each with an area of 1. So we have the total area of BGFA: 3 + 0.5 = 3.5 That's what I have. Please let me know if this makes any sense. Tina
  16. hey kfree, Yes, that's what I did. I just factored in the primes to get the answer. Is it right? Tina
  17. Hey kfree, The answer's C, right? They are both the same. Statement A simplified is just 255. I just plugged in and the highest prime I got was 17. Tina
  18. hi GRESWEDEN, n = 7q + 4 2n = 14q + 8 (14q + 8) / 7 = (2q + 1) + 1 Therefore, quotient, in terms of q, is 2q+1 Tina
  19. hi GRESWEDEN, Let x be the number of people eliminated: 1) 27 - x 2) x 20 x Therefore 20 Therefore, x = 21, 22 Hope this helps! :) Tina
  20. hi kfree, I totally agree on your take in paragraph 1. For par. 2, I think the author is just trying to praise Verdi for his ability to portary the politics of bourgeois life in art. I'm sure you're familiar with the saying "Life imitates art". I think in this case, it's more so "Art imitates life". The politics seen in the opera is really the politics we see in real life, that is, in the nineteenth century. As for the third paragraph, Verdi does not want the characters to just sing and show off their voice. He wants his characters to mean something. And that's the main difference between his works and those of other famous composers. I think Verdi wants the audience to open their eyes to the life in the nineteenth century bourgeois life, and he wants people to think about it, not just mindlessly watching the opera itself. Yes, inference questions can be hard. It means you have to find clues before and after the sentence of interest. For Q27, I made the mistake of what Verdi was thinking, not what the author was inferring. Well, Verdi wanted the opera to be reality, so when the author mentions what the opera was like before Verdi, it had to be the exact opposite, hence answer B. Anyway, kfree, I'm not very strong in RC's, either. But I hope my post helped you a bit. All I can suggest is to practice, my personal motto :) Tina
  21. hi kuriang, I think in this case, B is wrong. The reason is that the phrase that follows the highlighted phrase is "...or face significant fines". This is equivalent to "....or firms will face significant fines". The best answer would be E. The bill is requiring "firms to retain all accounting records for at least five years or face significant fines". Hope this helps. Tina
  22. hi ebpp0, I think the first choice is correct. You usually plead guilty for a certain action. In this case, the bank is pleading guilty "for failing to report" something. The "its" in the second choice might refer to the federal court. That's why I think the first choice might be better. Hope this helps. Tina
  23. Hi everyone, Here's something I learned about oxymorons. In case you don't know what an oxymoron is, it is a phrase formed when two contradictory words are brought together. For example, "pretty ugly", or "little giant", etc. etc. Well, here's a kicker: The word "oxymoron" itself is an oxymoron (if you break it up into the original meaning, that is). "Oxy-" is Greek for "sharp", and "-moron" is Greek for "dull". So there we have it. It's just an extra lesson I learned in my Latin/Greek undergrad course. Enjoy! :D Tina
  24. hi pojang, 13. The answer is D) . The investigators are asked to analyze airplane design, airline management and pilot-training programs. For what reason? To make sure that the same error does not occur in the future. Choice D) therefore sums it up nicely. 14. The answer is E). D) cannot be correct because it does not answer the question. The plan already assumes that quality standard can be measured, not that it "cannot be judged". Since the officers want the standards to be the same from year to year, the plan assumes that all of the 300 chosen should have the same quality. That is the criticism, as we can't predict that all of the papers have the same quality. 15.The answer is E). Sales - expenses = profit. You may have increased sales, but if your expenses are also very high, you won't have much profit. In this case, the expenses include the cost of mailing the catalogs to new clients. Therefore, choice E) is the right answer. 16. B) I think this is a question that deals with scope. The least relevant question to evaluating the choices would therefore be the one that is most out of scope. Choice B) is the only one that asks about the benefit of people living elsewhere. Since we should only be dealing with how the local people benefit and how it will hurt the wilderness, this statement is most out of scope.
  25. hi Malegria, Even though I think there is something wrong with answer C), it is still the best answer. Perhaps there should have been an apostrophe on scorpions (hence, making it "scorpion's head"). As for the "body" vs "bodies", I think we should treat body as singular. This is similar to us saying, "our body", rather than "our bodies". I hope this explanation is sufficient. If anyone else can explain better, then please do so :) Tina
