  1. Here doesn't it seem odd that nuclear fusion - a process is being compared with nuclearc reactor.........somehow it doesn't sound right to me..
  2. Thanks Erin, Sorry couldn't reply earlier. My only advice & I said it earlier as well - the questions you face in examination have absolutely different flavour to that given in various books & practice tests such as kaplan, princeton etc. The only thing that comes remotely close to the real one is the ETS Book. So make sure that you have come to grips with the ETS book before you mov to other stuff (that is if you want to.....though I won't recommend). As many others have pointed out, Time management is crucial. In the Quantitaive section, I was stuck on a question for 5 minutes, then rushed through the remaining and ended up completing the test with 6 minutes remaining. The same happened in Verbal as well. This is a sin. There are no extra points for completing the test in less time than alloted. So make sure to check the clock after every 7-8 questions. After the test, I was able to recall about 25 questions of the Quantitative section. 1 very simple probability question, no Permutation/Combination...2 questions regarding coordinates( equation of line, slope etc.) When I looked at them again.....I realised they were not difficult at all....The only thing is to keep your calm & composure during the exam. Though it may look like a very generic advice but do try to follow it. In Verbal I had 2 bold faced CRs, 2 back to back RCs, the Sentence corrections were simple...but Critical Reasoning was dificult. Thats it Erin...HTH Will keep you posted about what happens, Take care, ash
  3. Hello Erin, Retook the Gmat today..............improved from 690 to 740:). Just wanted to tell you how grateful I am for all your help...couldn't have done without Testmagic.... 4. sorry I forgot to underline the relevant part......here it is: The higher productivity rate of some Japanese companies relative to comparable US companies is due not to their faster production lines, which are in fact slower in the Japanese companies, but to a greater amount of engineers and equipment per production worker.
  5. Hi, Q) The higher productivity rate of some Japanese companies relative to comparable US companies is due not to their faster production lines, which are in fact slower in the Japanese companies, but to a greater amount of engineers and equipment per production worker. (A) (B) their faster production lines, since they are in fact slower in the Japanese companies, but to a greater amount of engineers and © faster production lines, which are in fact slower in the Japanese companies, but to a greater amount of engineers and more (D) the greater speed of their production lines, since they are in fact slower in the Japanese companies, but to a greater amount of engineers and (E) ) the greater speed of their production lines, since production lines are in fact slower in the Japanese companies, but to a greater amount of engineers and more Why is the answer E & not C ? Thanks, ash

    inequality problem

Hi Surabi, The answer is right. It is indeed E. First of all, don't try to solve inequalities as if they are equalities as you have done. Now coming to the question, z² - 4z > 5 i.e. z(z-4)>5. Therefore either both z & z-4 are +ve or both are -ve(to be greater than 5) and the minimum value of z has to be at least 4 if z is +ve. z>4 is not an answer. Now if both are -ves, then the value of z must be less than -1 so that the product becomes more than 5. If you find yourself in a bind, always try to plug in some value & see the result. e.g. in this case if you take z>-1, suppose z=2. The result is 2(2-4) i.e.-4 which can't be greater than 5.I rest my case...:D HTH, ash:)
  7. Thanks Erin, Point taken....from now on it will be a committed effort.....then we will see how the cat jumps......... Regards, ash If u someday decide to run for presidency...u have my vote.. Erin for the President!!!!:o

    new to gmat please help

Sorry davvy.........you won't be able to get xerox copies of ETS in Delhi(at least I tried unsucessfully). What u can do is to get hold of a copy from a friend & get it photostated urself....but my friendly advice to u is to buy the book.
  11. Hi, I think the answer is C. At most you can place 96 glasses on the table. Circumference is 4 * 3.14. Therefore the diameter of each glass is 3.14 * d= 3.14 * 4 i.e. 4. Now with a diameter of 4, how many glasses can be put along the length of the table? It will be 48/4=12. Similarly along the width 32/4=8. Therfore, total glasses that can be placed are 12*8=96. HTH, ash
  12. Hi Erin, I know you are a very busy man......but where are other 'senior' members of TestMagic...I wish they would take some time out and give advice to us mere mortals :o ............. ash
  13. Hi Arti, We have a few things in common - GMAT, interest in General Management, living in New Delhi etc. Can you tell me some colleges that you have short listed for applying to? I thought that you would have researched by now and so was hoping to piggy back on you.:o Also please tell me whether TOEFL is a necessity for these colleges? Thanks & Regards, ash
  14. Hi Makumbeiro, Thanks for the list. But would you be kind enough to add the column headings as well? It would make the list even more useful. Thanks & Regards, Ash
  15. Hi Erin, Thanks.......I knew I could count on you. Please tell me one thing Erin...is a college ranked say 30th worth all the time & effort? Please don't get me wrong...no offence intended for friends studying in such B-Schools....but what I want to know is what are the job prospects assuming that I do get admitted & graduate from there? It is a difficult decision considering that I have to resign from my job & slog for two years....If I get a top school then there is no problem...but for a slightly lower ranked college.....it is getting confusing...... One more thing Erin - what about other options e.g other colleges- australian, european etc. are they equally good? I know that these are not straight forward questions & the answer lies with an individual...but still before I make a decision I want to get an expert's view as well.........this mail has turned looking more like an essay than a simple query...... Thanks in advance, ash
  16. Somebody...some advice....please........
  17. Hi, Here is what I can recall from my GMAT exam. The Awa topic was : 'Employees should keep their personal activities out of workplace.' Quantitive section was easy (scaled score 47). No time problems there. I finished 10 minutes ahead of schedule. 1 question about combination ( 7 women, 5 men In how many different ways one can make a committee of 2 women & i man?,2 about sequence & series- a series is defined by a given formula...what would be 7 element?; a hotel has rooms in its southeren section numbered in odds starting with 803. What would be number of the 84th room? a cople of square roots questions, a DS question involving set theory, 3 simple mensuration questions......overall not difficult questions but good ones... you have to be attentive to solve them. Kaplan tests are more difficult but Princeton's was easier than the real one. I won't advise anybody to go for them. Just do ETS... that is enough. The surprising part of SC was that I found the original questions to be correct almost half of the time & not 1/5 as was expected. So be prepared for the surprises. CR is simple... no need to do anything extraordinary for that. Ditto for RC. Got 4 passages - a couple were considerably long. All in all my advice for anybody who cares to listen is to do ETS & don't let Erin rest in peace. Study ETS thoroughly & bombard Erin with your doubts. Regards, Ash
  18. Hi Everybody, Unfortunately I came in contact with Test Magic very late. But whatever limited interaction I had, I could make out that it's a great site. I just wish I had heard of it a little sooner. Neverthless I gave my GMAt on Friday & got 690. I am not being immodest but I was seriously looking for a few more. Now Erin what do you think I should do? I am a B.Tech. with an experience of 4+. My GPA is not too earth shaterring - 3.2. So what are the odds of getting admission in any top B-school? Is 690 enough or should I go for it again? How important is the score? And what about the other components of the application i.e how important is the essay? etc I will be posting the questions(which I encountered in the exam) in a separate thread... Thanks in advance................ regards, ash
  19. Thanks a lot Erin.....you have some stamina.........
  20. Hi Erin, Pleeaaaaassssseeeeeee pardon me if I sound foolish :o but I have to clear my doubts..... From what you have explained (& it is wonderful as usual), would I be very wrong to draw the following conclusion: When one is comparing two nouns performing two SIMILAR actions than one uses ‘as’ & if the comparison is between two nouns performing the SAME action, the usage is ‘like’? I hope you won't laugh...... Thanks, ash
  21. Thanks a lot Erin.....you are a great help:):)
  22. Hi, Can somebody tell me whether the conjunction 'nor' may be used independent of 'neither' in a sentence? Thanks in advance...........:sleepy: Regards, ash

    SC

Well thanks Harbinger but I do hope that Erin will throw some light on this. By the way which sentence would you choose as your answer from the following two? 1)She is aiming at winning a gold medal at the next Olympic games. 2)She aims to win a gold medal at the next Olympic games. Regards, ash
  24. Hi Erin, could you please tell me whether the conjunction 'nor' can appear in a sentence independent of 'neither'? Thanks, ash

Hi, can you please tell me the difference between'aim to' and 'aim at'? Which one is correct - you aim to do something or aim at doing something? Thanks, ash
