  1. It was great to see some of you guys there yesterday! for those who are waiting to hear about funding. I didnt get my offer until april13th last year. People got funding after and all the way through math camp. Its not unusual that you might not have heard about funding yet
  2. See I had the opposite experience from my big state school. I never really opened a textbook in any of my econ classes. Everything I ever learned was from lecture or assigned reading (articles)
  3. That's a good one! However I don't identify myself as a Wahoo as my football and basketball loyalties lie in my UG institution in the SEC However its nice to know that the stereotype of those I will be TAing will be spoiled brats Well at least the Va-tech view point
  4. Well I am certainly very happy to go to Virginia. Its a great fit for me
  5. Hey all I just got word (email) that I was rejected from Wisconsin. And its about time too! Took them forever.
  6. I think you have a solid profile and should be a strong top 20 applicant if not a string top 10 applicant. Of course you do need the 800 on the GRE quant to lock this up. My largest concern on your profile is the assistant profs for your letters. However you are from an LAC so i don't know that effects anything in terms of getting letters. The possible letter writers themselves went to top programs so you should just talk to them about it. They would be able to give you great advice on the process.
  7. you should probably try to sign up to take a math class for the fall just to show your not totally packing it in for them adcoms. Then if you are just doing menial work its not as bad
  8. I had an internship from them last year I heard back in late April Actually a year ago today was my start date
  9. The one thing i do have to add on this is it depends on your realistic target. If you feel like you are going to make it into a top 20 program then Economics advice probably applies the best. Below that however i think the value of RA is just less in comparison to grad micro regardless to program strength. The OP in a previous thread said they went to a mid ranked state school so probably not top 40 in econ
  10. 11 in econ 6 in Ag Econ done in a semester system but this includes semesters of research and the credit received and a PhD course
  11. The best advice if you have any uneasiness about a part of your profile, is make sure you pick a wide range of schools. I applied to 13 schools ranging in rankings from 8ish to 50ish I pulled down 4 admits on the lower end of the spectrum. I had people on this forum saying i should have been a top 20 person, I had one of my letter writers (who knows me well) saying I should pull in a top 10 admit. So you just need to have a good range and you will land where you should
  12. I say pick 8-10 out of the top 20 to apply to and then another 5 below that for some safeties But I will second all the previous advice on getting an 800 on that GRE
  13. My intermediate macro class had calc 1 as a prereq and we used Abel and Bernanke. But when i think back i don't know if i ever used it in the class (calculus) so i went and grabbed my copy of the text book and flipped through. It doesn't have any calc that i could find. Of course now I am kinda panicked for grad school because i have zero macro with calc experience nor any idea where advanced math comes into Macro....
  14. I concur Matrix Algebra
  15. considering taxation and the public finance side of PE Im guessing you could get lots of public sector jobs, the IRS, Treasury dept, the CBO, OMB in the white house, the CEA. Plenty of think tanks would also work well

    VISA question

Don't forget that if you take that outside summer work after year one it will start to tick time off of your visa stay after graduation.
  17. with that masters work top50 should be all but assured. Just in your SOP if you have any extenuating circumstances for your grades thats where you should talk about it
  18. If metrics is an interest of yours at all, then math stats is the way to go. 100%
  19. There are plenty of previous threads on this subject but from my own previous experience I didn't get in to any school where i mentioned profs by name in my SOP
  20. you pretty much wont get a tenured position right out of school. you might get tenure track which from there you can earn tenure by putting your time and effort
  21. I used Abel and Bernanke in my macro class
  22. Figlio is now at Northwestern I would suggest Michigan state as a safety/good fit. They are good at applied micro
