  1. I went from Bs in calc to A in Reals. Calc suffers because it caters to engineers and it's pretty computational. Understanding the material will net you a better grade in RA most likely. Memorizing calculus, not so much.
  2. Hot? Edit: Please, all who view this, assign a bad post rating so I can remember that this forum's personality has turned into that of a funeral.
  3. The GMU was not in the actual Econ department, from what I heard, and for what that's worth. Definitely a cool job, though. No idea on the NYU thing.
  4. Looking at NRC data on attrition rates is making me seriously consider looking into Math PhDs.
  5. Apparently this year has no sense of humor. Gonna pour a 40 out for my fallen 2009 homies.
  6. I'll guess that they might use multiple stage least squares / instruments or something for supply and demand equations. Read about the "identification problem". It's a possibility.

  8. Y'know, some people at Wyo opt to take comps as MS students if they want to do a PhD...you'd have to take the second semester PhD courses, but that's no biggie, they're enjoyable enough.
  9. Laramie is likely windier than Chicago, but I can't say for sure. Sometimes the interstates close just for wind. That said, I haven't found the weather out here to be so bad. The sun really does make a difference. I will admit that crossing the border to go to Fort Collins is like crossing to a new world, however.
  10. For what it's worth, I get the impression that UO has lower attrition, less competitive, and more stable funding. Might be worth verifying, though.
  11. Well, I've had to juggle around my plan since making that post. I have to take the two electives this summer, and add a math major seminar to the fall sequence, putting me at 4 classes, a thesis, and 20 hour RA job to handle. I think I'll do my programming in the spring, and will have to see what's offered, so I might have a chance to take C. I learned C++ in 8th grade, but have since forgotten it. Looks like fall is going to be a brutal semester.
  12. Hey guys, I've settled on Analysis, Math Stat, and Matrix Theory. Talked to the prof and asked around today about MT and was sold. Not too excited about ODE II to be honest, anyways. Now I've just got to find a way to fit in those annoying "college required" electives to actually get the degree. 1010's as a grad student here I come! (only need 2) Also need to fit in a Java class, and I'm set.
  13. ^ Thanks for the input. We're on semesters here, actually. So you think the Matrix Theory will be less helpful than ODE II ? I figured it'd help with metrics, and to be honest I really like the prof :P
  14. Yeah, the history class is basically for credit towards the math degree, but a time saver for thesis, etc. Maybe I should call it a backup and pick optimally for now, and re-evaluate in December. I think PDEs would be useful, but maybe a lot of time, too, considering RAII
  15. I'd like to know if this is a good school for me to apply to, myself.
  16. Anaylsis I (Rudin) - Definite Matrix Theory ODE II Math-Stat Will also take 3 in the spring: Analysis II (Rudin) - Definite Complex Analysis PDE (ODE II is a prereq) ODE II History of Math Currently I have the intro to real analysis and have an A, intro proofs, Diff E 1, Linear Alg 1 under my belt. My research interests are Dynamics/ENR modeling/stochastic stuff including valuation and micro fields like health, labor, etc, but I'm relatively weak at econometrics right now, to be honest, and I'd like to be solid at it, particularly if there's a comp in metrics where I end up. Would also like to self-teach stochastic calculus/diff-Es. I honestly really enjoy analysis so far, and think complex would be cool if I ever want to do quantum game theory. I will be working 20 hours a week for my RAship and writing a thesis over the next year, so keep that in mind. I was thinking: Analysis I Matrix Theory ODE II Analysis II PDE Complex Analysis but I hate to ditch math stat. Will Matrix Theory be better for getting a leg up at metrics? I should probably mention that I'll be applying to non-top 50's but want to be able to self teach myself to do research and be prepared for whatever is thrown at me, i.e. I'm less worried about admissions, and more worried about being a hoss at mathematics such that I'm not constrained.
  17. I cold hit for an RA job and am currently happily employed. Nothing to lose, I guess.
  18. Seacucumber, are there more posts on this? Seems like you went pretty far with a minimum of information. OP: Take the math, see how you do, if you love it, you're good. I started math very late myself and fell in love.
  19. EJR doesn't seem much different from 4chan or somethingawful
  20. They're changing the exam completely.
