  1. This year there are 70 graduate students in residence. Subtract the 17 who have not taken their prelims yet and we get 53. Assume that all students graduate in exactly 5 years, and divide 53 by 4 to get about 13 students per year post prelims. Next year there will be at least 24 in the incoming class. Yikes
  2. Decision day...I am taking the Penn State offer. I heard from a reliable source that Penn State has already had 23 (24 with me) students accept as of today (April 13). According to their website, last year they admitted 17. Going to be an interesting year :)
  3. Well, the ultimatum worked: Not exactly the way I hoped, but there you have it ;) Good luck to those still waiting!
  4. I just sent BHK an ultimatum...I told her I am making my decision tomorrow morning, so if Georgetown wants to make me an offer, it will have to be by then. Let's see if that has a salutary effect :p
  5. I emailed 4 times and haven't heard anything. How come none of you guys are posting the decisions on gradcafe?
  6. This application cycle I have really appreciated grad students with websites. These gave me an opportunity to see what kind of topics/research people at the schools I was considering were doing. I wouldn't advise keeping a regular blog, though. It is really fun, but a much larger time sink than you would imagine.
  7. Thanks gyfbless for the info. I second Ibanez. If we are all truly rejected, then why don't they simply write a one line response to our emails to that effect. Reflects poorly on Georgetown...I don't know if I could handle administration like this for five years...
  8. Thanks for the info, Julia!
  9. 3ohto4oh, I just emailed Kabalinski yesterday, and no reply today...did you get a decision from her? (Whoops I just saw your answer to this question above...doh!)
  10. Ok guys, time inconsistency. Spill the beans about the Georgetown call fest! was anyone in the office?
  11. How about: "Serious Financial Crisis will begin Fall 2007" and tell everybody you got it in 2004.
  12. Is this thread about analysis or IceColdEcon's good news:tup:? Anyway, my intro analysis last semester did 1-5 and a little bit of 6. This semester has been in session for a month and a half (weird schedule) and we are almost finished with 7. I have heard that Rudin gets pretty weak pretty fast after chapter 7. Any truth to this?
  13. I have an offer from Penn State, but I don't want to accept until I hear from all the schools I applied to (still waiting on one). In general, many schools are not announcing admission/waitlist decisions. Its like a bad equilibrium in a game--schools want to make waitlist decisions only after they have a good feeling about how many students will accept original offers, but students only want to accept original offers after they hear back about other waitlist decisions. Doh! What a crappy year to apply...:yuck:
  14. U.S. Population Living in Urban vs. Rural Areas - Census 2000 Population Statistics - Census Issues - Planning - HEP - FHWA Yeah, but 80% do live in "urban" areas (depending on how you calculate urban...about 70% live in cities of 50,000 or more). Keep in mind that there has been a whole lot of urbanization over the last century in the US. I would wager that very few Americans born in a city have migrated to rural areas, but that many born in rural areas have migrated to cities. Are the 20% of Americans living in rural areas choosing to live there? Yes, but it has more to do with choosing not to move rather than the benefits of 'Green Acres'.
  15. Agreed. I think if my Wisconsin and Penn State offers were both funded, Wisconsin would dominate. It is more highly ranked with more extensive macro (I would say the department is quite evenly divided micro/macro). Its when you consider the money situation that the decision becomes complicated... :p
  16. Thank you everyone for the advice. It really helps! Golden Rule: I took a look at the Eaton links you gave me. He looks very impressive...Penn State is looking better all the time ;) PeteKyle: I will pm you in a minute regarding your question.
  17. Alright guys, you shamed me into learning LaTeX. I just downloaded LyX...wish me luck :P
  18. Julia, let us know how the visit at Penn State goes...Thanks in advance!
  19. Good luck on the denial of service (denial of admission decision?) attack. If it wasn't in the wee hours of the morning for me I would be in too :)
  20. I heard a recent presentation on this one: Human Capital and the Productivity of Suicide Bombers Author(s): Efraim Benmelech Claude Berrebi The idea is that people with higher education levels make more deadly suicide bombers...but the dataset is tiny, and there are some serious reverse causality problems (maybe the higher educated people just get assigned to more important i.e. more likely to be deadly missions)
  21. Clearly it is a conspiracy by the Econ pentavarit: Stiglitz, Shleifer, Barro, Heckman, and Colonel Sanders--before he went tates up
  22. And she is doing measure theory in Chinese...mad props :D
  23. From the names, I would guess that Foundations of Analysis is supposed to be taken before Real Analysis. You might want to take that into consideration.
  24. It seems like World Bank research dept, for instance, is quite diverse. There are people with Ivy PHDs all the way to regional international universities: Data & Research - People & Bios It is hard to tell, however, when these people were hired. Does anyone know how important pedigree is today?
