  1. Hi Stuvok54, thanks for the heads up! I also have talked to a third-year student and have couple email exchanges with other students, as well. Flexibility is indeed a plus of Cornell AEM program. In addition, I found two of them actually presented their papers at NEUDC 2013, which is great! Another job market candidate also presented there. I am actually pretty impressed by JMP of AEM's candidates. I also heard many good things about collegiate atmosphere in AEM. Together with your information, they assured me to come to Cornell. I already accepted their offer. So, I will see you there if you decide to attend AEM! :)
  2. Thanks, Icculus. I will try contacting Phaneuf.
  3. Thanks guys for your suggestion. It seems almost everybody prefers Wisconsin to Cornell. Unfortunately, I cannot come to both places. I am not in the USA now. So I think my decision would come mostly from contemplation. :)
  4. Hi All, this thread seems quite for a while. :playful: So please allow me to ask some advice. I have a sort of dilemma here. I got acceptances to Cornell AEM and Wisconsin AAE. That's it. I only applied to two schools. My main interest is in development econ. I am leaning towards Cornell more heavily for its more diverse professors with interests in econ development. Moreover, more professors in econ department at Cornell who are interested in development than in Wisconsin. I plan to take devt courses in econ dept, in addition to those offered in AEM. On the other hand, I am very much attracted to excellence in applied econometrics training at Wisc. One more question, which do you think has more collegiate atmosphere among students and professors? Thank you, guys. Happy Sunday! :eager:
  5. Hi, yes, I emailed the grad secretary just because she promised last week to send decisions early this week so I think sending an email to her on Wednesday is valid. I could not wait because, like you, I could not focus on my work. She said she was busy organizing opening house day at the end of March and will send the letter soon. So, I think you should expect decisions to come this weekend or next week at the latest.
  6. Institution: Cornell AEM Program: PhD Decision: Accepted Funding: government fellowship. Notification date: 1/29/2014 Notified through: e-mail Posted on GC: no Comments: I sent an email to grad secretary asking about my result and she replied with great news. Letter will follow soon. :D
  7. Just got an email from grad program secretary at Cornell that they will probably be sending decisions early next week! FIngers crossed. :encouragement:
  8. Wow, really??!! I hope you are right. :eager:
  9. Hi guys, I want to ask something. I already secured a government fellowship for doctoral studies and wrote about it in my SoP. Yesterday I got an email from the grad program secretary at Cornell AEM asking about the nature and length of my government fellowship because they said they are considering my application. After replying the email, she shot me another email saying I should be hearing the decision shortly. Is this a good sign?? Thanks in advance for your insight. :)
  10. Thanks for more information, Icculus. It is helpful.
  11. Thanks, Icculus! Nice information. My main interest is in applied development economics. My plan is to get a good grasp of micro theory and master applied econometrics.
  12. Thanks, ms484! Of course, I don't force my main interest, at least in my SOP, to be exactly the same with Laura. In fact, it is a bit different.
  13. Hi ms484, I read that you are in Wisconsin AAE. I want to ask some questions. I am applying there for the Ph.D program. My main research interest is development economics, and I have written that I want to work with Schechter and Coxhead. Solely based on my interest, do I have a good chance to get admission? I know this is stupid question. I am just a bit concerned since I read in the forum that admission to an ARE program is heavily based on an applicant's fit to the program. What is the current focus of the AAE program? Thanks.
  14. Nope. No email. I just randomly checked the website after some rejections trickled on GC and this forum.
  15. I got admitted last week with no funding. Will decline it.
  16. That's great bioecon! I did not apply to Davis. By far I got acceptance from Rutgers econ but no funding, either.
  17. Thanks for your encouragement, AREStudentHopeful!! It's relieving. I hope I can get a full-time RA stint to fund my study. I shot them an email and Gary (assistant to (DGS) said that Prof. Davis will talk about funding opportunities in the campus visit day. So, I look forward to it.
  18. In that case, I think your situation is better, tatedps. I would not worry if I were you :)
  19. Hi Shirley1314, no they did not talk about funding. The email only said that many unfunded students usually get jobs as RA/TA when they come or even in the summer before starting their first year.
  20. Thanks for your feedback, Walras. That's right. One advantage if I manage to get a job as an RA is closer relationship with one person in the dept. Indeed, this potential advantage is what motivated me to gamble enrolling there despite unfunded offer. I actually also plan to send emails to some grad students there to confirm this information. Actually, they give the deadline for decision until mid-May. I will keep hoping for some people turning down their funded offers. :p
  21. Thanks for the responses, Wolf. I skimmed RA/TA regulations in Minnesota; the university will give tuition waiver accordingly depending on my workload as an RA/TA. But it's not really clear whether working full time as an RA will require me to work 40 hours a week, which could be a total disaster for me in terms of allocation of study time. I have sent an email to Minnesota Population Center to ask for an employment opportunity. Anyway, do you happen to know why Ag/Applied Econ in Minnesota is short in funding? I thought such department receives a lot of grant from federal government.
  22. Oh yeah, sorry I got admitted to Ph.D program. It's too bad they only offer to very limited number of students. :(
  23. Hi guys, I got admitted at Minnesota Applied Economics but do not get funding. The email said that many unfunded students usually get some RA/TA jobs once they materialize at campus. I am still waiting for other schools but I really want to go there. Should I gamble to enroll and get a job to fund my study? My concern is that I have to work in my first year and I believe it's gonna be tough. Thanks for your response.
  24. Hi all, I am an international student studying masters program at top 40 economics department in US. I have one concern about my GRE scores. I took GRE two years ago and got 780Q/400V/4AWA, I was pretty pleased with the scores but then I realized that my verbal score is too low for Ph.D application. So I retook it again today and my quant dropped to 158 but my verbal increased to 154. :dejected: However, I don't plan to retake it again. My dream schools are Berkeley ARE and Duke. Other than that I plan to apply to top 50 schools and Stockholm School of Economics and Bonn. I know it's not good enough but, aside from my GPA and other things, do you think my GRE score alone looks bad in the eyes of Adcom? Which one do you think should I send? I am thinking of sending both scores. But I am still not sure. Looking forward to your response. :encouragement:
