  1. i also think post-secondary education isn't subsidized enough.
  2. I think this is precisely why they (plan to) do it. If they placed a high enough emphasis on money over other job characteristics, they'd go to Wall Street, either with just a bachelors or a full-on finance Phd, depending on our discount rates. Grad students not only tend to have low enough discount rates such that their decision is optimal for them (but not irrational as the humorously Simpsons suggests), but I think they tend to value doing their passion very highly. (maximizing lifetime earnings doesn't map as well to maximizing lifetime utility for grad students, but it may for people who become bankers right after college.) If they wanted security they'd become health care providers or some other job for which demand is long forecasted to exceed supply. as far as accounting PhD's...I'm not sure...it takes a special type of personality to really like accounting, and I definitely don't have it. (I've only met a couple people who majored in it.) though I'm sure you'd make a killer CFO with an accounting PhD...
  3. it depends on the individual demand curves of the new buyers, which are not identical.
  4. especially makes things more specific, for example "I like cake, especially chocolate cake." specially is the adverb form of "special," and it is not used really that much. It can be used to mean particularly, or for one purpose. For example: "I made this cake specially for you."
  5. wharton just CHURNS out them online degrees. I KNEW it.
  6. well...i wouldnt be applying if i didn't feel already that i will be able to handle it. I think that is jumping the gun a bit.
  7. I'm more wondering whether it will help me get IN to the PhD programs much more than adv. metrix. I am not particularly worried about surviving one yet since it's a big "if" wrt to getting admitted anywhere.
  8. Does anyone have an idea about this, or do you think it wouldn't make much of a difference? If that's the case, I think i'd prefer advanced metrics.
  9. i dont see how beer is relevant to this thread, ZING. :D
  10. tom, but the description here doesnt seem like it uses measure theory right? the prereq is only a year of calculus, too. do you mean if i want to take the next level of prob after this one? doesnt the description seem VERY relevant for a basic understanding of the theory in econometrics?
  11. Good old fashioned guilt forces me to not procrastinate. I don't know how or when it was instilled in me, but it hasn't let. I simply can't have the same level of fun if I have work hanging over my head. I think it might be because I am a bad, bad perfectionist and am trying to extract as much utility from my free-time as I can.
  12. this is the description: Elements of matrix algebra. Discrete and continuous random variables and their distributions. Moments and moment generating functions. Joint distributions. Functions and transformations of random variables. Law of large numbers and the central limit theorem. Point estimation: sufficiency, maximum likelihood, minimum variance. Confidence intervals. it is listed as a phd course on the webpage, but i'm guessing most people have that done, since it is not one of the "core" courses for graduating, but rather, the very next level of probability that includes measure theory IS. so i guess it will not get me as many point as i might like.
  13. i dont know if it's wise, but i am doing it. it is helpful if you decided you want to pursue grad school a bit late, which is my story. i am also adding research experience and increasing recommendation pool.
  14. these kinds of profiles make me wonder why i even consider applying to grad school. better to be a guppie in the ocean or a shark in a pool? i'm not sure the answer is obvious. good luck though! :)
  15. I just watched Too Big to Fail, and it was deeply disappointing! :(
  16. call up the LA times. they will run the story and get a guy on the inside to expose them. AWESOME!
  17. you cannot determine without the price. If the price of the jacket is really high relative to shirt it will be closer to 40% (if you get discount on each jacket), it the t shirt is much much more then the total discount is closer to 20%.
  18. Silence of the Lambs, Godfather I and II, American History X, Fight Club, Star Wars, LOTR, Memento, Apocalypse Now, Full Metal Jacket, Platoon, The Shining, American Beauty, The Exorcist, Rounders (I really like Ed Norton, too.) You know, I tend to dislike movies that are based on a true story but feel the need to stray from reality to make the story "better." For example, the story of Facebook could have been an amazing movie without Aaron Sorkin's gross exaggerations. I love how they put the random crazy girlfriend story who tries to burn the house down, and it's a key scene in the trailer solely for dramatic purposes. There was a lot of BS included just for the sake of the trailer = making money at the expense of art. But what can you expect from Sorkin, a guy who compares himself to Shakespeare. Anyway, I feel the same thing was done with A Beautiful Mind. Granted, it would have been trickier to make the movie provocative without visual hallucinations (which Nash never had). However, I think it could have been done. I think economists enjoy movies that 1) they can't predict 2) don't follow a formula, and 3) make them think. The television analog is HBO.
  19. yeah the first prob is easy, i was talking about the one from the 4th post which is impossible
  20. beg harder. by the wayyou know those books only apply to the OLD GRE right? if you are taking it in 5 months, you will be taking the new one
  21. Where you getting 15 from? The problem I quoted doesnt tell you how many people total there are. It just says "a group."
