  1. I know, and as an infracted poster for doing nothing in the past year, I expect at least one infraction to be set on that TM. Where is the moderator of this forum?
  2. Such serenity speaks to either the degree of power expressed by grad café predictions or the unwillingness of people to volunteer. In case, people don’t volunteer, what are the options?
  3. I am sorry for the moment you decided to post the above. How will you treat your papers required for submission during study of the PhD required courses and later on, at the stage of dissertation (assuming you get admitted once), if the unusual stance posed in your post above does effect on your thinking?
  4. Listen to the expert opinion above mainly I will tailor my feedback to the previous opinion as well as try to answer your question from my perspective 1) not all higher division mathematics is relevant for the graduate study program in economics. The linear algebra is relevant though; so is statistics. Additionally, you must know the single variable calculus and study a standard course of mathematics for the economics covering an optimization theory. You need to learn econometrics enough to understand the sort of textbooks like one authored by William H. Green. 2) focusing only on math will curtail your ability to retain vital math information employed for the intermediate micro course, which is full of the selected calculus topics. Moreover, you have to study and know the intermediate microeconomics in order to get admitted into the strong PhD program(s) in economics. 3) to understand what is the research and how to think about research, at least one economics course (preferably micro) should be taken. You are supposed to read a lot of economics articles and compare the old theories with the new ones in order to build the economics idea evolution stairs in your head. This way you will be enabled to generate plausible ideas in economics. 4) each program is different, and the faculty will recruit the future students who meet its rigorous demands. Forget about the faculty research interests for the moment of admission. Focus more on your strengths. Your knowledge of programs will require spending more time and paying more attention than you will benefit from that eventually. Know the bare minimum about every program to which you are applying. 5) standardized English test score is required for the submission by international applicants. If not for only the score, this will help you avoid obvious mistakes allowed by chateauheart in one’s reply to your queries. 6) if you are interested in the research this is one thing, and your research interest is the other thing. The topic of your PhD research work is totally unrelated to your admission fate, unless you announce the very irrelevant area of interest in your SoP. But the economics is so broad, that I am sure even then you could overcome any concerns by AdComs. Briefly state some research idea that is consistent with your background.
  5. have your grammar set properly before posting in the public forum and avoid making entries under fake names, please
  6. You can argue, agree or disagree with the ideas presented in a post, but you cannot attack a character of the poster. Above you are attacking my character by misinterpreting the post content and making statement about my habit. This is not in line with the rules of urch forum, and you must not be allowed to do that. I am asking the moderators of this forum to restrain such action by chateauheart in the future. You have also minused my earlier posts, after receiving the feedback on your last entry.
  7. HA-HA-HA, I am enough educated to know which terminology to use and which to avoid. In your case, studying the past data of Admissions vs. Profile evaluations is the exact preservance of a scientific method. The described by you is an emprical approach. In the case of Insti, an inclusion of the opposite premise for inference makes sense for Bayesian system. Our inclusion of below 35 & educated into the sample would prove hypothesis. Finally, your thinking of the past and trying to relate this to the profile evaluations contradicts to choice selection principle raised to LAW by economists. To put this simpler, you are ignorant of the opportunity cost. Otherwise, you were forced to conduct forecasting "our advice would be accurate for a more general pool of applicants", and you had opposed forecasting too
  8. Be carefull please, as you dare to call on the TMs to fight with each other. Some of us may think the frequentist way, while others act in accordance with Bayesian system
  9. Thank you. You managed to trickily avoid the trap I have almost fallen in. The statement made by anonecon is normative in its virtue. Hence, we are put to prove or disprove the statement (alike a hypothesis) based on the values of forum members evaluating the grad.applicant profiles. Let's go and agree or disagree about Admission vs. Profile evaluation at urch forum then :encouragement:
  10. Why not to ascribe everything to astrology then, which serves the same purpose. I propose to complete the profiles with zodiac details
  11. No This post and the related ones above mainly propose conducting experiments which show the relationship between exemplified variables such as grad. applicant profiles on the urch. forum and evaluation by the forum members. But what is our hypothesis? Is this how plausible is the evaluators’ reasoning? Or, may be, this is about the prediction abilities of urch. forum members coming as the diverse group of men armed with no specific evaluation criteria? I am not very well versed in research conducted within a framework called the scientific method - I only hold an undergraduate econ. degree. But from what I know as the undergrad., to make valid assessment and prove the hypothesis is not false (by default, the urch evaluation must be set false), we should find out what is the population of total applicants for the specific grad. Programs, and afterwards we will select the reliable sample(s). We may want to establish criteria for the evaluation(s) too, as forcing those statistical experiments to find out the relationship between the exemplified variables cursorily will create hazard for our econ. thinking, still nurtured, as we seek admission into the grad. programs (MA/PhD).
  12. Admission committee will review each and every one's application based on the requirements of PhD program in Economics, which has minimum prerequsites including passing econometrics course. Putting t-stats in the front line might show some relaxed background re stats for the economics graduate education. Instead, I'd say a word about dummy variables and the latter's application as regressor in simple regression models.
