  1. hey thanks for all your compliments and advice! but somehow some people seem to think that i choose yale bcos it looks pretty? well, i did like the architecture, but what i liked more was the professors and the research they were doing, because I already do the same stuff, so I know a little bit of background already. the only reason i was hesistant was that it was 100 miles from my home (i go home often), but after i visited it seems worth it, and its only like a two hr drive anyways. so yea, i think i have finally made up my mind on Yale. and weather, well i live in New Jersey, so it cant be that different from here! and I used to live in CT for five years so...weather is not a problem for me, i'm used to it. as for the bad neighborhood, a lot of cities have that, and since I'm not the type to venture out into the city anyways, i dont think that should be a problem. I'm more of a, get up, go to lab, come back and sleep kinda person. :) thanks! Pavi
  2. hey guys! I know I haven't posted in while...so here I am. Last weekend was the visiting weekend at Yale, so just wanted to share my experience a little bit. In one word, awesome! New Haven is a beautiful city, wonderful architecture...I had meetings with six professors, most in bioinformatics, some in CS, stats. Since it wasn't an interview, I wasnt nervous at all. Mostly we talked about what I currently do, and what comp bio work they do in their lab. Other than that, they took us out to eat, bars, we each got our own room in a four star hotel...So after that, I think I would definetly consider going there (if Princeton would let me know of their decision soon...) Take care!
  3. just a question for all those who are going into phd programs. I applied to the bio dept and have gotten one admit so far (yale), still waiting for princeton. i was wondering whether anyone here was considering starting school early say aug or even july, and if so, what are the advantages. I am going into bio where they have rotations, and i dont know what the point would be to start earlier since I dont have one lab where i will be working in. i am currently an undergrad and my current advisor asked me to stay with him over the summer instead of starting grad school early. so now i'm confused as to which way to go, what are the advantages/disadvantages of either... 4. hi there I applied for PhD programs in bioinformatics too for next Fall. Well, all the progs i applied to are actually bio, since I couldn't find a univ nearby that had a full fledged bioinf dept. I am an undergrad, double major in CS and Bio, so this was my next step. I got accepted to Yale, Biological and Biomedical Sciences dept for a PhD. Still waiting to hear from Princeton. Both these univ bio progs are ranked in the top 10. Their CS progs are ranked pretty high too. Even though most univ dont have the actual CB dept, they offer classes and stuff, and ultimately what matters is who u do ur research with, and a lot of univ has bioinf researchers. So look into that too. Both Yale and Princeton have some pretty good people in this area. Pavi
  5. Hey guys I applied to princeton too for a Ph.D in molc bio (bioinformatics track). I found out I got into Yale, still waiting to hear frm princeton though...Here are my stats. BS Majors : Biology and CS GPA : 3.87 GRE : 720Q, 600V, 5.5A Currently working as a research assnt at a bioinformatics lab on campus.
  6. am still waiting to hear from princeton though, cos its my other top choice. I applied to their mol bio program, dont expect to hear before feb...
  7. Hey guys!! Wow, I didn't expect to see so many replies...Well, here's a little about me. I am an undergraduate senior at Rutgers University, NJ. I am a double major in Computer Science and Biology. GPA is 3.88. My GRE scores were 720Q, 600V, 5.5A. My subject GRE's in Biochem weren't so good, considering I didn't take biochem...56%. Right now, I'm doing research at a bioinformatics lab on campus, been here since summer 2004. A prof from Yale contacted me over phone and told me I got in. Today, I got their acceptence letter. It says I'm gonna have a $26,000 stiped, and I have to TA for two semesters. I'm going to their recruitment weekend Feb 10-13. Anyone else going?? Pavi
  8. just found out i got into Yale for a PhD in bioinformatics!! any other Yale admits?? I applied to their BBS program... Pavi

  11. hey sweta i dont know what difference the one month will make in terms of preparing. by the looks of it, nov seems to be better cos the earlier u apply the better, and the sooner ur scores reach the univ, the earlier they can decide. so dont delay taking the test. in terms of preparing, atleast for me, one month wouldnt make a difference. i realized that i end up just postponing until i have just enough time. so once u set a date, start focusing. once u register for the november one (thats when i'm taking mine), atleast u'll have a mind set that the gre is pretty soon, and hopefully u'll start preparing at full pace. in a better light, u have 3 months, which isnt that bad. -Pavi
  12. hey mani wat r the answers?? -Pavi
  13. 1. C Distraught is a extreme form of troubled. Rapacious is an extreme form of covetous (greedy). 2. To endow is to give something, income is to get something. Endorse is to give consent, approval is to get consent. -Pavi
  14. Can someone give me the answer and ur explanation for this antonym question... CATEGORICAL X A. qualified B. denial C. ironic D. refutation E. negative -Pavi
  15. This explanation is for the second one... The architects built a city, although new york did not actually have the history. So focusing on the second blank, A-deserve - there is nothing in here that tells us that NY did not deserve the buildings. Same for B and E, we dont know anything about NY desiring the buildings, or NY believing ...So that leaves us with C and D. For the first blank, we know that the city did now have the history, so there is nothing to preserve, that rules D out. This leaves us with C. Evoking a history here is kind of like trying to stimulate something that is not there... -Pavi
  16. Here's my explanation for D... techological advances have made it easy, even ___ to install water features... Since it is easy to provide water, and water is a necessary resource, first off prohibitive, and intricate dont make sense. So that elimates A and C. E doesnt make sense because installing water would not be unnecessary. That leaves us with B and D. Today water is more ___ in landscape... B does not fit this blank as "Water facilities being sporadic" is not the meaning the sentence conveys. Since sporadic means irregular, or not grouped, this is almost an antonym for what we are looking for. Choice D makes the most sense, because ubiquitous means "everywhere", therefore, water is almost everywhere in landscape architecture, since technological advances have made it easy, almost obligatory to install water features. Oh, the power of elimination!! -pavi
  17. I go with Y is a specific kind of X - Roll call is a type of Voting (Oral kind), just as cloture is a type of Termination. -pavi
  18. tractable - easily managed. the opposite would be obstinate or stubborn which is no where near meaning violent, rash, impulsive (all synonyms of impetuous). -pavi
  19. augury is a type of prediction in that it is usually associated with divination, whereas prediction is a prediction of any sort (scietific, general, etc..). So augury is more of an omen... -pavi
