  1. Hi Erin, I am not aware of the "right" way to request for a sticky, so I am posting the request here. Can you please make the post "TOEFL Essay Writing Tips" http://TestMagic.com/forums/showthread.php?t=12765 OR an earlier post (containing the same contents) "help me to classify toefl essay's topics" http://TestMagic.com/forums/showthread.php?t=731 as a sticky for the "TOEFL Essays - TWE forum" http://TestMagic.com/forums/forumdisplay.php?f=37 I have seen many people (including myself) benefitting from the excellent post. I have also seen an equal number of people missing out on this post, once newer posts appear on that forum. It will also help the reviewers in giving more specific and better reviews - if the person posting his/ her essay has already gone through these points. Majority of times, a reviewer ends up re-stating these very points in a review. thanks, Anuj.
  2. I no expert - still here are my views :) Tans, you must be having a decent writing speed - typing an essay of 664 words in 35 minutes. Your essay is on the longer side, as asad pointed out, but I guess that should not be problem as long as you - finish it on time - have enough spare time to review it - do not lose control over organisation of the essay. (fyi - more details of typical essay lengths can be found in "Figure 1. Essay length and human reader score for Prompt C."in the document "Beyond Essay Length: Evaluating e-rater®’sPerformance"at ftp.ets.org/pub/toefl/990112.pdf>. [/color]Themax length of the sample essay in the Figure was around 600) Comments about your essay PROS ----- - lots and lots of points, many of them relevant, described in good detail. CONS ------ - In the intro para, you can summarise the reasons of taking the stand you are taking. - The conclusion is weak - u need to restate the reasons for taking the stand. - Couple of grammatical errors in the essay. - About the structure -- Somehow your essay is organized around examples rather than points. Some of the points are getting overlapped across paras, example - para 3 and 4. -- Somehow I would have prefered an organization something like this - Para 1 - Intro (including summary of points for the stand) Para 2 - No space to improve roads - only way to go under using subway trains - Also not all places connected via roads - so train the only way to go (Basically, pointing to limitation of roads and highways) ... Para 3 - Reduced pollution by better means of transportation rather then trying to improve infrastructure (pointing to one benefit - this one in comparison to improving roads) ... Para 4 - Reduced Traffic accidents and congestion by subways and trains - Also improving existing transportation leads to better transit times - thus again reducing congestion (second benefit ) ... . . . Para Last - Conclusion (summarising the points again) A concluding note - since you are able to come up with decent number of ideas, do not try to push all of them into the essay. Pick only the best among them, try to delineate paras for each properly, along with supporting examples. Use intro and conclusion para to summarise and strengthen them. I have no doubt with a little bit of brushup, you can easily score a 6.0. Anuj.

  4. Hey zorrillo, Congrats for the prefect score. It doesn't get any better than that. :) I guess, TOEFL essays are scored more leniently than the GRE ones, so no need to bother over the 5.0 in GRE AWA. If you have written a decent essay, following the standard guidelines, than you stand a strong chance of getting the 6.0. best of luck, Anuj.

    Rate this essay plz

At least 300+, preferably touching 400. Check out portions of this thread http://TestMagic.com/forums/showthread.php?t=12735 For an essay, "Bada Hai To Behtar Hai" (Size does matter) :) . But again do not loose control over the organization of the essay, in attempt to increase its content. Anuj.

    Music and Culture

    - Please mention the essay topic clearly, it helps the person reviewing the essay (he doesn't have to dig out the toefl essay list and locate the relevant topic first) Topic: Music tells us something about a culture. What does the music of your country reveal about the culture of your country? Use reasons and specific examples to support your answer. - The essay is short (preferrable length 300+). Go through earlier posts on the board in this regard. - Tone up the intro and conclusion para. State the relevant points about the "aspects of culture" revealed by the "music of your country" clearly. - The first point - varied demography - is stated clearly in the intro para and supported decently in the second para. - For the second point you could have organized the para stating that - the third para - better. - Some of the other threads which you should check out -- A great thread by Riz on general aspects of essay writing http://TestMagic.com/forums/showthread.php?t=12765 -- Another essay on same topic http://TestMagic.com/forums/showthread.php?t=11421 - In case you are still in the initial stages of essay practice, pick up "easier" topics (Q - what are these ?? A - go through the toefl essay list and you will realize which are the easier ones). They well help you in getting the basics correct faster. After that you can start tackling the other "tougher" topics. Anuj.
  7. Hey Raoni, Congrats dude !!! Getting a 6 in essay is a good feeling. I also scored a 6 :) http://TestMagic.com/forums/showthread.php?t=13570. Same here :) . Anuj.
  8. My final scores - L 30, S 30, R 29. Got a 6 in the essay :), thanks to Testmagic. Anuj. p.s Rest of the details are in a previous thread 240-297 ... 2 Sept 2004 http://TestMagic.com/forums/showthread.php?t=12832
  9. - grammatical mistakes. - at times usage of quotes is fine, but in my opinion overusage is equivalent to bad punctuation. Ex. - When you use a phrase, make sure you get it correct. After the trivialities, a note about the organization/ structure. - Your essay lacks contents. Try to come up with more points in favor of "Will-power". You have listed only One point. In case you are not able to think of more than one point in favor of "Will-power", choose some other attribute (even if you strongly believe in "Will-power", do not write it if you cannot think of points in its favor). Also see riz's post on "TOEFL Essay Writing Tips" for general tips on essay structure Anuj
  10. Fundamentally no issues with the essay. Just one comment, try not to overuse "For instance" (or any other phrase/word) - be ready with synonymous phrases/ words. Anuj
  11. Hi Isa, This was a decent essay. I don't have any specific comments about it. This essay should secure you 5+. No.

essay - plz rate it guys

This thread might help (In case you have not checked out already) TOEFL Essay Writing Tips I personally prefer the Keep It Simple S.... :) principle for TOEFL essay. I don't think the level expected in TOEFL essay is anywhere near what is expected in GRE ones. In TOEFL, even if you don't have a great grammer or vocab you can still get a good score if you stick to the basics. Deviate from the basics, only if you have gained enough confidence about your writing style. (REM - TOEFL is just another test where you need to get a good score and exit; it might not be the best reflection of your writing abilities or best platform to develop one). best of luck. Anuj. :)
  13. - Ditto ... in addition, For the day before ... - go for a good night sleep. - do not touch anything new - you might land up in a mess ... - clear up the loose ends i.e clear up the earlier mess. In case you are not too confident of about some section - say structure - just go through couple of practice exercises - to get yourself into flow. In case you feel that you need to glance through the essay list - just glance through that quickly. & finally chill out and relax ... For THE DAY ... - When starting off with the exam - in case you are feeling the butterflies - allow yourself (& your breathing) to settle down. Spend time with the untimed/ unmarked practice instructions/ questions before starting off with the main test. Start with the main sections (timed and marked) only after you feel that you have settled down reasonably well with the test surroundings, the temperature, your chair, your headphones, the inclination of your monitor, the lighting and more importantly with your breathing. The moment you feel that you have regained the level of focus/ concentration required, stop fooling around with the initial dummy section(s) and move onto the main section (for this you need to be comfortable with the instructions upfront - use Powerprep for that) - The intial questions are the most important for adaptive sections (they determine your marks to maximum extent + they make/ break your confidence/ flow for the future questions). Allow yourself to linger on them a wee bit longer - the extra time spent might help. - You can try closing your eyes in the initial few questions of the listening section (which is the first section) - this might help in focussing/ getting into the flow better. - At times when you make mess of some questions in a section, you might go into a downward spiral in the section - try to avoid that (can't offer any practical tips for that). More importantly don't allow the spiral to extend to other sections. In case you feel that 1-5 minutes break between the sections is less, make use of the leftover section time (in case you finish the section early) - do not immediately click the button(s) for completing the section. Try to regain your composure (& your breathing) and go with a fresh mind for next section. best of luck for the exam. Anuj.

essay - plz rate it guys

Okay, I will be a bit strict (& perhaps harsh - I apologize for that) with this essay since I strongly believe that you could have written a much better essay, had you stuck to the basics and not tried to overreach. - unnatural (& at times incorrect - wrt the context in which they are appearing) usage of "heavy" vocabulary. Keep the vocabulary simple and along the lines used in normal essays/ writing. Essay is no place to show your mastery over Barron's word list. - Second para off-topic. You are asked about You are not asked to discuss about why some people spend leisure time indoors/ outdoors. - First para off-topic to an extent. --It is okay to give some "background" in intro para, but then you allowed it to "flow away" with the second para. -- Also you never stated your position clearly in the first para (alongwith summary of reasons for that position) - Third para is where your essay actually starts/ lies. You need to work on its organization so as to convert it from a para to a whole essay. Anuj

    admission ticket

At least in India for sure they do not send any admission ticket for online registrations. This fact I confirmed with Prometric (ETS) people in Delhi. To be on the safer side, they recommend that you bring the printout of the online/ email confirmation, on the examination date. Otherwise as Minu stated , the confirmation/ appointment number is all that you need , which is ... . Anuj.

  17. Well I just got my sex changed. :) (In India Anju is a very common name among females, while Anuj means younger brother). But no bother, this is not the first time I have faced this mixup :) Anuj.
  18. I will be addressing only this issue in my comments below. - I guess you have two points for "most interesting class" -- first brush with computers -- class which determined your course of life According to me both the points are fine, but the second point does not go too well with the other portion of the essay - "Why did u enjoy this class so much?". Still (again in my personal opinion), it is okay to go with these two points in case you are not able to come up with other point(s). - Now the second problem with the essay is that you allow the second point to overpower it too much. -- 3 & 4 para both address the same point (ignoring the difference between academic and non-academic life) -- Also, your conclusion only contains this point instead of both the points. It would have been better if you had stuck a balance between the two points - better still inclining it towards the first point. Anuj.

    essay #130

No points, only comments from me :) - essay length too short - introduce the ideas in the introduction para - summarise the discussion/ ideas in the conclusion para - coming back to the first point (in case bulking up intro and conclusion para does not help too much in overall length) - try to support any idea which you introduce (it is good for both bulking up, as well as from point of view of what is expected in an essay). Ex - even though it is pretty obvious, why shouldn't children watch the television all the day ??? Just writing a single additional sentence will help. Somehow, I feel that you might be making the same mistake as I used to do in the my earlier essays (Due to which I ended up with essays of ~250 words). At least I assumed that stating a point suffices. You needn't go into details trying to elaborate on the most obvious points. They can be deduced by the reader. In case you are under the same assumption, please get rid of it as soon as possible - it won't be good for the health of your essay score. Anuj.
  20. (In case you are confused by mention of allahbad in the earlier post in the thread) I gave my first toefl (two years ago) in Allahabad. This time it was in Delhi.
  21. Hi Ricihe, I am no expert, still will try to comment on your essay :) pro ---- - The essay's organization is good. You have delineated the points clearly. - The points mentioned are good (as you pointed out - due to your major) con -- - As you pointed out, work on the grammer. You need some work there. In the meantime try not to go for too fancy or long sentences. - Try not to introduce "I" in the essay. It is an essay which asks Its not asking why you visit the museum. All the points will still remain valid but try to put it from the perspective of othe people. Try to remove this I" factor from intro and conclusion. hope this helps. Anuj. :)
  22. I am not sure whether my comments will be on time (exception being - unless you are staying up late preparing for ur toefl tomorrow OR you are not giving toefl in India) Obviously your word selection is strong, but here are my comments about the not so strong things. - failure to state your stand in context with essay topic You definately state the importance of sports clearly but its always better to mould the intro and conclusion para according to essay topic's exact statement. - essay organization - I personally find the third para a bit off the topic In case you were having problems with contents of essay, you could have split the second para into two paras. It contains sufficient points to permit that. Also, a general comment (I also glanced through a couple of other essays you posted) - When writing long sentences, be very careful about the punctuation marks. Best of luck with your toefl tomorrow. Anuj
  23. Hey Minu, Congrats. Thats a good score. Best wishes for your essay. I am a bit surprised that they did not allow you inside the Delhi test center waiting hall, 1 hour before the exam. In my case, I had also reached the center an hour before the exam (8am for 9am exam) & already there were plenty of toefl people sitting in the main waiting hall. Also, at least in my case the volumes were pretty decent. So, I guess no concrete conclusion can be drawn about the hearing levels at the exam (unless I was the only one lucky enough to get some good hearing equipment). Also best of luck with your GRE preparations. Anuj.

  25. Sorry for starting another thread on list of universities requiring subject test in computer science. This is a list containing admission policy of various universities wrt subject test. You might have put in some effort to cull out what you require (require test/ does not require test/ for MS/ for PhD) =============================================================================================================== The list below was generated on 08-09 Sept 2004 primarily by searching university websites using google "site:" operator. Needless to say, such type of list might get outdated very quickly (implicit unit of time being admission sessions). Some thumbrules (there are exceptions like gatech, so again these are not 100% foolproof rules) In case subject gre not required for Phd, it will not be required for masters In case subject gre recommended for Phd, you can assume that it might not be required for masters NOTE: - In case a university is not present in the list, its status has not been checked (Don't assume implicitly that it does not require subject test). Also, the universities are listed in order of their Computer Science rankings. - This list is concerned primarily with "Computer Science" Department and not "Computer Engg"/"Information Sciences"/ ... In case the university did not have an explicit computer science department, the nearest department to it was picked (Again this might be a source of error). - Please check the university urls carefully - it might be that the information was wrongly collected perhaps from a different campus of the university/ similar sounding university. - To reiterate the above points - This list does not claim to be 100% accurate. There might be errors. Having said that , I have tried to compiled the list to best of my efforts, since I will also be relying on the same list for my admission decisions. - Read all the paragraphs listed under a university heading, before drawing any conclusion about university policy for Subject Test. I have deliberately not tried to draw any conclusions. Also note the url before a paragraph. It might give some hints about which program is this paragraph referring to. - The list, in addition to previous stated errors, might suffer from error introduced due to google search -- In case there is some older admission policy page which has higher hits, then it would have picked that. -- Since I searched explicitly for "subject test", there is an inherent bias to show page which list information containing the term "subject test". A new policy webpage, which might omit the term altogether might not have turned up in the search. -- Again having said that, I tried to exercise maximum possible caution in such cases - one of the apparent ones being trying to triangulate on department policy wrt subject test, by listing data from multiple pages. Best of luck to all of you. Hope you land up in the universities of your choice, without ending up giving all the exams present in the ETS stable. :) Anuj. =============================================================================================================== Carnegie Mellon Univ.(PA) http://www.cs.cmu.edu/education/admissions/doctorate/how_apply.html The GRE subject test is optional for those applicants to the Computer Science and NBC programs. Applicants to HCI with an emphasis in Human Science or Computer Science must take a subject test from the area that best matches their background. (For example, HCI applicants with a psychology background should take the psychology subject test. HCI applicants with a computer science emphasis should take the computer science subject test, etc.) HCI applicants with a design emphasis and applicants to the Robotics program are not required to submit a GRE Subject Test. It is recommended that applicants to the Language and Information Technologies program submit a subject test. The Software Engineering program highly recommends, but does not require, a subject test. The Computational and Statistical Learning program requires only aptitude tests, although your application may become stronger if you take the subject test such as computer science, statistics, mathematics or a related field. The Computation, Organizations and Society program allows students in the management area to substitute the GMAT scores for the GRE scores. See individual program requirements for complete details. http://www.mse.cs.cmu.edu/Admission-HowToApply.html GRE - All applicants MUST take the Graduate Record Examination (GRE), both the general tests and the advanced subject test in computer science http://www.cos.cs.cmu.edu/apply.html The GRE computer science subject test is not required, although your application may become stronger by including it. http://www.cald.cs.cmu.edu/phd/questions.html Do I have to take a GRE Subject test? While it is recommended and may improve your chances of being accepted, it is not required. Stanford Univ. (CA) http://www-cs.stanford.edu/Admissions/ It is highly recommended, although not required, for Ph.D. applicants to take the Computer Science Subject Test. Scores from a Subject Test in Engineering, Mathematics or Physics also may be submitted. http://cs.stanford.edu/Admissions/faq.php The Subject GRE test is not required when applying to the Master's program. It is highly recommended, although not required, for Ph.D. applicants to take the Computer Science Subject Test. Scores from a Subject Test in Engineering, Mathematics or Physics also may be submitted Univ.of California-Berkeley http://www.eecs.berkeley.edu/Gradadm/admissions.shtml The GRE General Test is required of all applicants. In addition, Computer Science applicants are strongly encouraged to take one of the following GRE Subject tests: Computer Science (C29), Math (M67), or Physics (P77). http://www.eecs.berkeley.edu/Gradadm/faq.shtml The Computer Sciences division strongly recommends applicants take the Advanced Subject GRE in either Math (M67), Physics (P77) or Computer Science (C29). Cornell Univ (NY) http://www.cs.cornell.edu/grad/gradstudies/applicat.htm The Computer Science Department requires a GRE subject test for PhD admission, preferably the CS test. A subject test in another science area is also accepted, particularly if the applicant's undergraduate background is in a non-CS field. http://www.cs.cornell.edu/degreeprogs/grad/MEng/appinfo/ GRE test results for the general test The subject test in Computer Science is highly optional--recommended for applicants who did not major in CS (Cornell undergraduates are not required to take GRE's). Univ. of Texas-Austin http://www.cs.utexas.edu/users/UTCS/gradoffice/admission/admission.html All applicants (for either the Ph.D. or Masters degree) should submit the following: Computer Science Subject Test (AGRE), although applicants who have degrees in related fields and who have already taken the subject test in their field may substitute that score. However, the CS test is strongly preferred over any other subject. Univ. of Washington http://www.cs.washington.edu/education/grad-brochure/AdmissionRequirements.html A GRE Subject Test is recommended but not required (may be taken in computer science, mathematics, engineering, physics, etc.) http://www.cs.washington.edu/homes/rap/gradappfaq.html It says that the subject GRE is optional; should I take it anyway? That's an excellent question. And, in the best computer science spirit, the answer is: It depends. If you do really, really well, then it's clearly a plus. If your background is from a school that's either (1) not in the same country as the one you're applying to, (2) not well known or (3) doesn't have a great reputation, the subject test is going to matter more. Basically it's a way of callibrating what you know. However, unless you do really poorly, it probably won't hurt. When in doubt, take a practice test. If you do well, take it for real. If it's optional, and you do poorly on the practice test, don't take it for real. http://www.cs.washington.edu/education/grad/prospectiveFAQ.html Do I need to take the Subject GRE for Computer Science? No, you don’t need to take the subject test. We don’t require it. Princeton Univ http://www.cs.princeton.edu/gradpgm/brochure05.html Is the subject GRE also required? Yes. The subject GRE should be taken in the field of your major. We consider this score important for comparing applicants from a wide range of educational institutions. A: No, the subject test - in computer science or related disciplines -- is not required but may be submitted to strengthen your application. http://www.cs.columbia.edu/faq-phdadmissions.html I have my valid General GRE scores but have not taken the Subject test yet. Can I still apply? Will my application be considered incomplete without the Subject GRE score? Can the requirement for Subject GRE or General GRE be waived if these exams are not administered in my country in the near future? General GRE scores are required: your application will absolutely *not* be considered without them. The Subject GRE policy is more flexible. If you cannot take this exam (for example, because the exam is not administered in your country this year), please note the reasons in the text box that we have included for exactly this purpose in the online application form, in the "Test Scores" section. Listing your reasons in that text box is sufficient, so please do *not* contact us asking for an explicit "waiver" or special consideration. Finally, if you are unable to take the Computer Science exam, but have taken a Subject GRE exam in a related area (e.g., Math, Physics, or Engineering), please report these scores in your application. Duke Univ.(NC) http://www.gradschool.duke.edu/scripts/cfml.exe?template=/duke/Programs/detail.cfm&ProgramID=8 Test required - GRE General. GRE Subject in CS recommended for Ph.D. applicants. Purdue Univ.-WestLafayette(IN) http://www.cs.purdue.edu/graduate_program/gradinfo/2003/ad.html Graduate Record Examination. We do not require any GRE test. http://www.cs.purdue.edu/graduate_program/admission/steps.htm GRE scores are not required. Univ. of California-San Diego http://www.cs.ucsd.edu/gradedu/admissions/graduateadmissions.html It is also recommended, but not required, that applicants take the Computer Science GRE Subject Test. http://www.cs.ucsd.edu/gradedu/gradprogramfaq.html The evaluation process for applications is extremely complex, taking into account all the materials submitted with the application. Grade point average (GPA), GRE scores, GRE subject test (optional, but recommended), TOEFL (for international students), letters of recommendation, and statement of purpose all play a role. First, the UCSD Graduate Admissions Office evaluates each application to determine whether or not their minimum standards for admission have been met. Then the CSE Department does a more thorough evaluation in a committee consisting of several faculty. Sometimes the committee must draw on the experience of the faculty at-large to make and informed decision. http://www.cs.ucsd.edu/gradedu/admissions/gradappchecklist.html The computer science Subject Test is recommended, but not required (other relevant subject tests may also be taken, such as in math or one of the physical or natural sciences). Univ. of Massachusetts,Amherst http://www.cs.umass.edu/csinfo/gradinfo/FAQ.html Q. Is the GRE subject test required? A. The GRE subject test is strongly encouraged. Univ.of Southern California http://www.cs.usc.edu/admissions/graduate/phdadm.htm In addition to these (required) items you may submit: - Reprints of papers you have written. - Score report for the subject GRE in any of the following - Computer Science, Engineering, Mathematics, Physics, Chemistry, and Biology - Reports of substantial research projects you have undertaken. For example if you did some research at a prior institution and wrote a technical report or a project report. Reports on class projects are generally not useful and should not be submitted - A pointer to a web site that highlights your research. Univ. of Virginia http://www.cs.virginia.edu/admissions/prospgrad.html The admissions committee strongly urges the CS subject test. If your major is not Computer Science, you might want to also take the subject test in your major area as a supplement to your application. You are strongly advised to take the GRE exams as far in advance of your application as possible. We will not make a decision on an application until the scores arrive. If you wait to take the exam as late as January and are applying for Fall admission, you will be handicapped because admission and financial aid offers will be made starting in January.
