  1. Do you think that people who came straight from undergrad struggled more than those with masters?
  2. At my program (not ARE) 1st year students who are funded will be TAs. The funding is guaranteed for first four years. 5th year students are in lower priority of securing TA jobs but I don't know about RA as there's no info posted in the website. I'm a bit worried too about what chateauheart says on longer expected time to finish.
  3. How good is Wisconsin masters program? Any info is appreciated
  4. More info about me 1. I'm doing independent study this semester so I'll have at least one letter from my professor saying about my research 2. From placement records since 2010, so far I find that this place draws recent phd graduates from U Chicago, Princeton, U Penn, Berkeley, Duke, Phio State U, Boston U, UIUC, Penn State, Purdue, and CUNY
  5. To me, I think both prove that I can do empirical research, which I suppose that's the desirable thing adcoms want to know about candicates. I kinda have a further question what people think about a letter from phd econ boss who went to top 10 program?
  6. What do you guys think about doing research at a well-known firm rather than being RA for professor? My duty will be doing research using econometrics heavily to analyze and forecast trend of economy at a national and regional scale. In general, if people work at econ consulting firms and develop econometric skills tremendously, would adcoms put weight to it when applying to econ phd?
  7. Yes. I'm very disappointed. They're supposed to offer intermediate linear algebra but many faculties are away next semester.
  8. i've already taken stats and analysis and i'm planning to take cs. other possible math classes are rings and fields and optimal control
  9. The class is going to be about Euclidean and non-Euclidean geometry. Do you think the class is helpful at all for econ phd?
  10. Hi, Rings and fields and geometry happen to be the only two upper level math classes offered next semester and I have not taken them yet. Which one would you guys recommend to strengthen my profile for econ phd? Rings and fields doesn't require prior class of group theory (which I have never taken it) and I have no idea how much those two are related. I have taken the second semester of analysis and advanced stats already. Or shouldn't I take those but take python instead since I don't have any computer science background and it can be useful when dealing with huge data? preparephd
  11. Hi everyone, Does anyone have recommendation about how international students (who are studying in the US) should prepare their well-rounded experiences (I'm not talking about doing research at their institutions) before applying for econ grad school? It's really hard to get an internship in the US as many internships require citizenship. I have been interning with government of my country (all major macroeconomic-oriented govt agencies) for two summers including this upcoming one and I really appreciate any thoughts/comments for my next summer in 2015.
  12. If that's the case, between group theory and ring and field, which one is more important? At my college, group theory is not a prerequisite for ring and field. Do you recommend skipping group theory (and taking adv prob and stat next semester) and taking ring and field next year? Or should I do both group theory and ring and field in sequence. At least I have classical prob and stat in my hands but I do not have any algebra. For the sake of balancing workload, will that be ok to take both real analysis and abs algebra at the same time?
  13. I have heard from many people that taking abstract algebra can be a strong signal. For grade,I get A on both proof class and stat class but I'm not sure how much harder adv stat and abstract algebra will be. I expect both classes to be small (about 10 people) and profs here curves the grade. So far I think I'm interested in macroecon, specifically international finance and public finance, but my interests might change as I still have two more years to explore.
