The best suggestion I could give is to ask the accounting professor who will write you a recommendation letter. The general reputation of your recommendation provider and the strength of the recommendation decides the programs that you will get in to some extent.

Based on my personal experience, I would say it is totally okay for you to ask. I shot them an email the minute they told me I was being waiting-listed, and they replied in great details about where I stand their list.

I am guessing we have a very small pool of applicants this year.

My application status is still incomplete. I have tried to contact them several times by phone, while no one answered. Additionally, they have already sent out several interviews....So I just moved on...

Based on my experience at my university where I took my master, it is very rare for professors to hire master students as their RA. They usually turn to their PhD students.
