  1. Are you Canadian or PR? If you are then you have a decent shot at UofT if you do well in the last term since a lot of you key courses come from that term. If you are not, then I think it will be difficult for UofT but you probably have a chance at the other schools.
  2. Hello, my background is also canadian undergrad at a similarly ranked school. I think your chances at the LSE are quite high. I would say that most student have less math than you and also worse grades. Overall, I disagree a little with the above post. The intake rate for Msc Econ at LSE was something like 13% 2 years ago, note there may be more student who were admitted but chose not to come. It does not seem to me like an extremely competitive program, and I think your profile is strong enough to get in. I would also apply to the EME program.
  3. Hello Pafnuti, as a current student of Msc Phil and Econ, let me give you some information I believe you'll find relevant. I will also gladly meet with you on campus to discuss if you need. Currently there are ~15 of us in the program, compared to 150ish if you count Msc Econ + EME. So one thing I really enjoy about the program is how close our group is and how much social activity we do together. Pretty much we get together at least once a week as group at the George and we of course always hang out at the library and after class as well. This is not something I've seen in the Msc Econ because it is such a large program and I have a few Econ friends who have indeed complained to me about how cutthroat everyone seems. Classes. As you know we take half econ and half phil classes. I personally am taking Advanced Micro, Metrics, Philosophy of Econ, and Rationality & Choice so I can only speak for those. The philosophy courses are amazing, the professors really engage with you during seminars and are really open with students. For instance, we go drinking after class together or after talks etc... This is NOT something that the econ department even comes close to. My impression is that the professors won't even really speak to you unless you speak with them and the seminars are just problem set solution handout. But alas that is the nature of having many students and a more quantitative subjects. My impression of the econ classes is that they are just the undergrad version with more math and given that I did a math major I do find it quite trivial. Now I want to talk about PhD prospects a little. I would like to contradict Chateaheart's claim above. It is actually not the case that many students want to go on for a PhD among the Phil & Econ program so the 5.3% is not something I would worry about. For instance, in my cohort, only 3 of us considered PhD's and only I am applying. My impression is that if your math skills are already very strong, then there is no need to do a regular Econ Masters because you cannot demonstrate your quantitative skills strongly through those courses. A master's course in microeconomic simply is not as mathematical as a 4th year undergrad math course that is rigorously taught.
  4. I think you need a reality check. Students with far better profile than yours get rejected at schools which you do NOT want to go. Furthermore, I am not sure that going to a MA in Russia would help with your profile much. Even if you did exceptionally well at a program like the EME or CEMFI, I doubt you would have good shot at schools like Berkeley. If this is not your final year, I would say that applying to MA programs and doing well in a prestigious MA program that is well known by the American Universities is your best shot. With your profile as it is, I think you will be very disappointed by your results.
  5. Institution: University of Toronto Program: MA Decision: Accepted Funding: 8K funding + 6K TA Notification date: 03/03/17 Notified via phone, snail mail, or email: Email Comments: Seems like they are eliminating the General/Doctoral Stream starting this cycle.
  6. Hard to tell without knowing the specifics of your current undergrad institution. I would say that if you get As in your Adv Macro/Micro/Econometrics classes and a good score in Real Analysis, then you can definitely get into some PhD program. Again, hard to tell since you are only starting your undergrad education.
  7. Hello, I am applying to Grad programs this fall. Currently, I am a student of Econ, Math and Philosophy. My main interest are Applied Logic and Decision Theory. While I know which schools I stand a chance for among the Logic departments, I am less informed for Econ. My current university, while being highly ranked, is weak on the theoretical side. So, judging by my profile please give me any advice or recommendation you have. Thank you for your time. PROFILE: Undergrad: Top 3 Canada, Specialist in Mathematics & Econ, Specialist in Philosophy (A specialist is the equivalent of 1.5 Major at my university) Undergrad GPA: 3.63 Cumulative, 3.8 in most recent year Grad: None GRE: None yet Math courses: Calc IA (B), Calc IB (A-), Linear Algebra I (A), Linear Algebra II (A-), Real Analysis(A+), Group Theory (A+), Advanced Calc (A+), Math Logic(A). Currently taking Topology and Ordinary Differential Equations. Econ courses: Intro to Econ(B), Intermediate Micro(B+), Intermediate Macro(A-), Quantitative Methods(A), Classical Econ(A-), Advanced Macro(A+), Econometrics(A+), Advanced Micro(B), Neo-Classical Econ(A+). Other relevant courses are a few formal logic courses in Philosophy (A+) and an MA seminar in decision theory (A+). Letters of Recommendation: I have 2 associate professors who are willing write me solid letters. I do not think they are well known however. Research Experience: I have no supervised research experience. However, my independent research papers have been published in undergraduate journals and I have presented at an undergraduate conference. Teaching Experience: I TAed for the math department for a year. Thank you so much for reading, and any suggestion is greatly appreciated. Also any suggestions on how to improve my profiles would be great!
