  1. I went to pitt's website, can't find a year by year placement. They seem to have lumped together all placements since 2000, which hardly gives any indication on recent academic placeents. I see the 55% TT jobs stat, but is that US alone?
  2. lol surely you must know I didnt imply your chance of getting into academics is 0 if you're outside T20. Just saying chances are low, and getting harder in recent years and you generally have to be the best (or top 2) in your graduating cohort if you're outside T20. Look at the T25-T35 schools: in general number of academic placements IN THE US between 2015-2017 is strictly less than, say, 2012-2014. And as others have pointed out, not sure what rankings you follow but no one considers UCSD outside T20. Its actually seen as T15.
  3. By academic job do you mean in the US? I don't want to sound more discouraging, but if you're hoping to work in US academic market you need to get into a T20 uni to stand a reasonable chance (these days more like T15-T10). US academic market is very hard to break into, unless you produce an exceptional jmp and perhaps do a post doc at a top school. Other avenues for research in US are institutions like WB/IMF but these also hire mostly from good schools (T50 mostly). So a master's is unavoidable for you if you want to work in research in US. Alternatively if you want to go to industry in US, you can probably do so from a lower ranked school. Again, if you want to go back to your home country, the ranking probably wont matter and you can try right away. Best of luck
  4. very little chance at a top 50. GRE 168 is nothing special, most asian students have 170. No math courses, and mostly finance stuff which won't help with first year econ phd courses. your undergrad GPA is not good. If you're hellbent on econ phd,, apply for masters in econ in canada and go from there. Alternatively, if you plan on returning to your home country after grad school, branch out more (top 80 perhaps).
  5. What is the rank of the canadian school? I think this is very important. If it is T5 in Canada you should aim T15-T40. You'll probably get a funded offer somewhere. If its T10, maybe do T15-T50. If its an unknown canadian school, do T30-T60.
  6. You have no shot in T50, or most likely T60. Very low GRE score, MBA will not help (might even hurt since it shows no consistent career flow towards phd econ), but most of all 10 years of private sector experience will hurt the most given your age. Your engineering undergrad might help you hit somewhere between T60-T100.
  7. While its anecdotal, I have a friend who scored 158 in Q and got into PSU (was a physics major from US LAC). This was 2 years ago.
  8. with a math major its unlikely it will get thrown out. If you have the energy and time to retake it I would aim for a 170 in math though. verbal scores won't matter until its really low (read less than 150).
  9. Hi OP. I just started at a school very similar in rank to UC davis (us news). I disagree with the above posts that you need an RA to hit T30 if you have a good math background. Your's is solid (would say really solid except for the lack of an analysis course). I've got several classmates with profile similar to yours (and a couple of people with profiles strictly weaker than yours). So I think you should apply to T20-T50 for sure, and if you have time, throw in a couple of T10-T20 as well. I also disagree that its very hard to move up in ranking from undergrad to grad programs. That may be the case if you're looking to move upto T15-T10 perhaps, but certainly not at T30s. Again, I have class mates who bumped up more than 20 places in ranking. Best of luck to you.
  10. lol dude you have way too high and mighty an attitude. very few (if anyone) in this forum thinks your credentials are as extraordinary as you have been implying. 8 years of pvt sector experience doesnt count as the kind of academic-style research adcoms like to see. that you graduated a long time ago hurts. No doubt you're very good, but you sound like you're going to go into OSU thinking you're way better than the rest, and that will hurt you.
  11. I absolutely disagree with this. How can you like this ranking? How in the world does this rating put places like boston college and USC ahead of cornell duke maryland toronto and minnesota? How is monash university's research output (or placement) better than maryland minnesota toronto stern nyu?? Utter rubbish. If you like research output go see Tilburg, sort by top 10 journals and then see.
  12. Yeah absolutely. Would like to know others views on the following 6 schools which tied 29th in the rankings. which of these are generally considered top 30: OSU, MSU, UIUC, UNC, Davis, UVA?
  13. I disagree that georgetown is between top 15-25, or even close to that for that matter. Please see page 11 in a summary of rankings over time from MIT. No georgetown in top 25. http://web.mit.edu/ir/rankings/USNews_Grad_Rankings_1994-2016.pdf
  14. A friend of mine just recently picked UNC over Emory. Although he is more into macro than applied micro. I think you should go to UNC given that its arguably a top 30 program. As many have said, better to go for overall ranks as you may not know what you might want 2 years down the line.
  15. Hi Rohanps, how do you determine these comparisons? Oxford between 30-40? That would suggest schools like let's say UIUC, UNC, Ohio State, UVA which are ranked around top 30 in usnews are perhaps a bit higher ranked than Oxford?
