  1. Dear Anand Iyer, May be I am not seeing your age anywhere due to my old age. I am not a tech savvy guy so I am looking at non monetary issues. But would n't your age influence the decision. Because with age as said in the earlier reply emotional issues crop up as also family reponsibilities etc. Do you want to study further? Maybe MS would strengthen your interest in continuing in academics for doctoral studies. Correct me if I am wrong as I am in the same boat I have admission to MBA programs and if I do them and get good grades my road to PhD would be strewed with admits and full tuition fee waivers. Right now my GPA is 3.09. It appears to reduce my chances of assisted PhDs. Best of luck!!! gsm_73
  2. Dear mine has been messed up I am in middle of changing jobs See my profile http://www.www.urch.com/forums/showpost.php?p=114987&postcount=16 MBA I am still open to all three have not finalised which of the three I will attend. Looking at possibility of transfer Maybe best wishes gsm_73
  3. Dear MBA Aug 05  I felt that I could add a wee bit more to what i have said in the previous post: Asking for more never harms. Universities Ad mission committees and directors keep receiving such requests. Though the support might be incremental it is worth it. Do not expect a big increase. Some Universities have the reputation of increasing funding after receiving such requests though I do not know that is it at the undergraduate or graduate level. Another vital statistic is how do you stand in the admitted students pool? Collect information about other admittees even past years would help. International student strength, Asian admitees, The question is "Does the Uni need you?" The following bit is lifted verbatim from another posting "By the way, the terminology to use is "will you reconsider" not "I am calling to negotiate...."" I am aware of the implications of plagiarism in academic world being an academic myself. The reason for repeating the post is that on my second try to business school I have had some success (financial aid front) but that is not enough. I want you get through. regards, gsm_73
  4. Congrats!!! Since I am in the Financial Aid mode (Posting, Reading, and Replying to FinanciaL Aid questions) Have you been blessed with some aid. I am a non CS applicant But any admit gives me equal joy. regards and best wishes gsm_73
  5. I am very much an international student, from India and I have been awarded a graduate assistantship worth US $ 2800 for 8 months which brings with it a tuition fee reduction in the form of remission of difference between instate and out of state tuition fees. Total fee reduction = approx 6140 US $. This is about Oklahoma State Uni and for MBA program. I was going through ASU Carey website yesterday. They have two types of scholarships/asistantships: One which results in tuition fee remission like I explained above second results in complete tuition fee waiver Both are open to International Students. Every thing being equal In addition to low fees and expenses state universities also offer complete tuition fee waiver. A member of this forum posted this: Tippie (U of Iowa) - Grad Asst with salary of 8K per annum and In-state tuition (10K per year) Baylor U (Texas) - Full Fellowship (waiver of entire tuition fees for both years) + Salary of 4 K per annum Baylor Website says:"Chartered in 1845 by the Republic of Texas" so it is a State University. State Universities Score. Regards gsm_73
  6. But remember if you are offered scholarship in Public Schools (State Universities) you are eligible for In state tuition. I do not know if complete tuition fee is given to part scholarship awardees I for one got a small scholarship: graduate assistantship for 8 months lumpsum 2800 US$ resulting in in state tuition. In Private universities find out if complete tuition fee waiver results because of graduate assistantship.
  7. This article is from business week latest issue. But its content different from the thread topic. 8. I do not know whether this would be off any help. State Bank of India offers education loans For loans upto Rs. 4.00 lakh you do not need any collateral or margin, For loans above 4 upto 7. lakh you need a guarantor. Max loan for higher edu outside India is Rs. 20 laks but with complete (100% collateral) I was advised that first or single year's expenses need to be shown for I20. But if it is more it won't do any harm. (I understand that saying it here is like putting salt in ur wounds but those were the exact words.) I remember reading in one article that taking loan can cut both ways, one if it is a large amount to repay you need to take up employment in US assuming that u are studying there and if it is a small amount you might come back. Improving chances of visa being granted. For a loan of Rs. 4.00 lakhs if to be repaid in 48 months instalment would be 14000+. So with large amounts of loans employment in India cannot support the repayment. So I donot how that would be viewed by the Visa officer. AWhig (with respect) Are those siblings likely to contribute to the kitty. regards gsm_73
  9. I do not know about in state tuition but you can definitely ask for some (more) aid. Colleagues from Two different universities have advised the same thing. Also writing that you would want to attend join their program but are held back because of the small aid package. Write polite email to director and the admission committee. Maybe an email that with out additional aid your dream of attending college may not come true could also work. See who the profs in the college and write about possible research and or teaching support you can offer. Check out profs of the same nationality. Politely putting your side is not going to harm. Everyone understands that for international students (I am presuming that you are one) it is difficult with out aid (more aid). Do tell me what happens. Regards and best wishes gsm_73

  12. To The Stanford Phd I have read each and every post on this thread. I have applied to MBA programs twice:999-2000 and 2004-05 and PhD once: 2004-05. Though I do not know what I would be doing going or staying back; the posts and replies would prove useful in answering the inquiries I keep receiving from my students. Thanks. P.S. Standfordian You are replying to queries at odd hours seeing that it is 11:00 am in India. That is really great.

  20. Dear Dhruv and others, I was in a Phd program here in India before they changed the rules about aid when it came to me. the decison was and is still taken by an autocratic guy of a director. Had to leave with few pennies in my pocket. Had spent the rupees staying back supporting self till a decision was taken. Applied to few colleges. All rejects so far. Feeling that what have I gotten myself into with huge bills for application and score reporting and what happens if all reject me. It is no back to square one for me. Had tried in 1999-2000 did not succeed then leave alone Boston University. But with out schol cannot imagine leaving and living outside India. What will I do. It will be Mumbai Meri Jaan for me. I will go and eat now. gsm_73
