  1. well nothing really surprising about university rigidity.i am from mumbai university(india) which actually gives us the entire syllabus for 4 years when we enroll..i encountered exactly the same problem.my undergrad degree is in computer sc. and engg. and my weak math background really hurt me when i applied to math depts.(my interests lie in discrete mathematics ,algorithms & theoretical computer science). the situation was EXACTLY the same as in Mishal's case..except that i wouldnt kill to go to MU(i wud def. have killed to get out of it if i had to)
  2. i think thats not a problem..as long as the visa is there....but there's no harm contacting them
  3. i would like to ask a related ,but more general query regarding the math AGRE.What are the best books for each of the topics covered in the test(calculus, analysis, algebra, probability etc.).i mean actual textbooks, not test preparation guides.
  4. I am not sure if one can generalize, but i observed at my university that all those who gave their GRE in aug-sept-october got an unidentified experimental(which has to be given equally seriously, since u dont know which is which).I had given my gre in october 2003 and i had got a similar experimental section. My friends, who gave their gres in late feb, march, early april got an identified research section which was completely different from the normal sections.
  5. Thanks a lot..Really relieved to hear that!!
  6. Hey maan I dont really know much about the university apart from the fact that its a great school  CONGRATULATIONS!!!!!!!!!!
  7. S Q you can contact the department to which u have applied by phone..they will reveal the decision to you. Good luck!
  8. I had my passport made in 1996.It expires in July 2006. I plan to go to the US in fall 2005.Will the fact that my passport expires in 2006,when actually I will be in the US for atleast 2 years, present a problem when i have my Visa interview? I tried to renew my passport but it cant be renewed before July 2005(ie at max one year before it expires) Kindly reply if you have ne idea regarding this. thanks
  9. hey vipin, CONGRATULATIONS on your admits!!! and i believe you have made the right choice. i dont know if u can reject an offer after u send the acceptance reply( i guess not)....However,i guess SUNY is a better choice than even TAMU,from whom you havent heard yet.(unless TAMU is particularly good for your area of interest) Hope that helps.
  10. Degree: Bachelor of Engineering(Computer Engineering) Undergrad GPA: 65% Undergrad University: Vivekanand Education Society's Institute of Technology,Mumbai University Test Scores:GRE Q800/V760/AWA 5.5,TOEFL 290(essay:6.0),AGRE in Computer Science:740 Research Experience: ZILCH;however, working on a final year project which is related to my area of interest(theoretical computer science) Desired field of graduate study: MA/MS in Mathematics. I am interested in discrete mathematics/combinatorics/graph theory, algorithms and theoretical computer science SOP: Cant comment Recos: just about average, from unknown lecturers :( Admits/Rejects: - Arizona State University(admit) - Louisiana State University(admit) - University of Delaware(admit) - Carnegie Mellon (reject) - U. Multiple I-20s

Hello everyone, I have got my I-20s from Arizona State UNiversity and University of Delaware along with the admission letter. I plan to accept ASU's offer of admission. I would like to know if I have to return UD's I-20 with the response form ?They havent mentioned anything about it(on the other hand,ASU does mention that if i dont plan to accept their offer,i should return the I-20) Cheers.
  12. Thanks gforce I hope so too...fingers and toes crossed!!! I m from VESIT..what about you? My academic interests are in discrete mathematics/combinatorics/graph theory ,generally the mathematics applicable in the analysis of algorithms and theoretical computer science.
  13. Yeah, its virtually over for me.The mathematics dept. at UIUC rejected my application for MS in applied mathematics(algorithms & optimization).:( The reason they gave was "record in mathematics not good enough".Now that CMU,UIC ,U-wisconsin madison and UIUC have rejected ,I am surely going to ASU for MA in mathematics.the reason i said "virtually over" is because UFL and Pittsburgh are yet to reply, but they are below ASU in my priority queue. Actually, like quite a few people have said in this forum,i guess, for a non-math major, directly getting into top group I school, even if it is just for Masters,is not the easiest thing in the world. And it doesnt help when you have majored in computer engineering from Mumbai University, where mathematical rigour in ANY course is conspicuous by its absence. Anyways,I just hope i do as well as i possibly can at ASU and get into a group I department for my Phd.
