  1. Congs Man !!!! Gr8888888888888888888888 score!
  2. Doodes, kindly evaluate my argument ...! rgds Sai ================================================================================================ The cities of East Sacunda and West Sacunda are in an earthquake-prone area. Since 1985 both cities have had stringent building codes requiring all new buildings to have specific features designed to prevent damage in an earthquake. Buildings built before 1985 are exempt from the codes, but many building owners have modified their buildings to make them conform to the 1985 codes. Last year a major earthquake hit the area, and many people lost their homes. The number of people who were left homeless was much higher in East Sacunda than in West Sacunda, however, so we can conclude that building owners in East Sacunda were less likely to modify their buildings so as to bring them up to the 1985 code standards. I disagree with the conclusion that building owners in East Sacunda were less likely to modify their buildings so as to bring them upto the 1985 code standards. Let me illustrate my reasoning point by point. The very first assumption made here is that the 1985 code of standards really are efficacious. Say, for example, that these codes are not well- proven to prevent an earth quake. Then, the argument falls apart because even if one conformed to code of standards, it would not have helped him save one's home. The second assumption is that there are equal number of homes in East and West Sacunda. If this assumption is not true, and say that East Sacunda has more homes than West Sacunda, then assuming the same intensity of quake, the loss would have been obviously more in East Sacunda. Then, assumption number three. The author assumes that the intensity of quake was equal in both the Sacundas. Provided this is not valid, and say that the intensiy of the quake was more in East Sacunda, clearly more damage would have been seen by East Sacunda. Then comes the fourth assumption. There might be less number of old houses in East Sacunda compared to West, or for that matter none. So, there exists no possibility that East Sacunda people conform to th 1985 standards. The sum total of my critique, then is that the conclusion reached by the author would have been more convincing, had the above mentioned assumptions were true. In the case that they were not true, the conclusion reached is not sound, and hence not cogent too. sorry dooded the formatting was removed ... below the good one. ================ I disagree with the conclusion that building owners in East Sacunda were less likely to modify their buildings so as to bring them upto the 1985 code standards. 3. Doodes, Kindly rate my essay ... !! Pls pointout the flaws, may be in grammar, words, logic, or what ever .... Thx, Rgds Sai ======================================================= "In order to improve the quality of instruction at the college and university level, all faculty should be required to spend time working outside the academic world in professions relevant to the courses they teach." I strongly feel that the involvement of faculty in the related professional world will improve the quality of instruction. The participation of faculty in the professional front can be more than instrumental in building the gap between the two worlds - the university and the industry, resulting in mutual betterment. Well, why should professors be involved in the industry? The answer is simple - industry is the consumer of knowledge, whereas university produces knowledge. Just the way the proof of pudding is in the eating, the proof of university research is in the application of it to industry. And, this very thing substantiates the idea that the faculty, who are primarily "knowledge-troves", will only be able to deliver better by keeping themselves involved in the industry. Let me take an example - Internet. This concept was a brainchild of one of the university faculty, and slowly found a place in the industry. Then on, industry started utilizing the concepts and commericialized it. But what made it the most utilitarian is the involvement of the same faculty in the industry as well, by continuously understanding the needs of the industry, and improving upon the technology accordingly and developing it further ! The second obvious factor in support of my opinion is concerned with money. The monetary factor is the most improtant in doing a sustainable research. Faculty may have very good ideas, but until unless they go into the industry and convince it about their ideas, they may not pursue with their research because of lack of funds. Ofcourse, universities may themselves have funds, but industry is definitely richer and provident with respect to applied research. Such a participation of faculty in the industry also helps improve logistics by creating a relationship between the university and the industry. The industry may come forward to fund some more projects, provide some more facilities and all this contributes to more effective instruction at the university. From the perspective of the student, this will simply make the transition between the college to industry very smooth, a very good thing indeed. Some people may argue that faculty may simply waste their time by spending their efforts in the industry, but from the above discussion and elucidation, it is very clear that it is a very advantageous, mutual-barter. The bridge between the industry and the university is very very important in making the time spent by faculty in research very useful and rewarding. In a nutshell, the faculty participating in industry will make both the worlds better.

  9. Congrats Red_Heat !!!! All the best for your future !! Sai
  10. Thx a lot doodes !!! It goes without saying that RC was easy ;) ... But the GRE practice of skimming the passages took me a long way in saving much a time and then gave me a room to re-look into my answer choices. Sai
  11. Imran, have a peep into your mail box for the ans. BTW, I want to just share with you people what material I used for prep. Mainly Cliff's, Kaplan, Cambridge, and tests on those PowerPrep. I strongly advocate to take PowerPrep tests very seriously and reserve them for the last period of preparation, just before the test. Rgds Sai
  12. Dooodes Finally finished with TOEFL L 27 [dance] :) S 13 - 30 :hmm: R 30  Lot many Thanks TESTMAGIC(ians)!!!! The Success wouldn't be possible without TM. Got greatly benefitted with the info, test material, and what not !! My test started in a seemingly turmoil and ended giving me a soothing feeling. I still can't help scolding for putting myself in such a tensed situation. Because of some augurous reason I was totally tensed. Did few first ones correct, meanwhile my concentration drifted away, resulting in making me selecting wrong choices. Adding fuel to it, some answers were really confusing. This greatly led me think that I'm going to make it a damp squib. Don't know how finally I made it to such a score !!! I regained composure when I entered the 'G' area. I was sure to get a cent, but don't know why  I didn't get it. Took the cool break afterwards, continued with the RC section quite coolly. I finished it much before the time. Writing was also an easy gallop doodes! Expecting atleast a 5.5 !! The topic can be addresssed by most of us effortlessly. My GRE is on this 26th ....! Hopefully I don't commit the mistakes again there ... !! I wish each and every TM guy/gal the very best in TOEFL, GRE, GMAT or whatever. A ton of thanks again to TestMagic. Rgds Sai
