  1. Hi All! I'd like to ask for your guidance and advice as I'm planning to apply for PhD by the end of this year (for Fall 2021 intake). I'll graduate from my master in economics this May from T30 US university. So, I delivered subpar performance for some of the core courses needed to apply for PhD, which I knew it'd definitely hurt my chances for getting accepted. Here's the following info: Grad-level Microecon: B- Grad-level Stats: B Applied Linear Algebra: B Grad-level Macroecon: A Grad-level Econometrics: A- Grad-level Applied Econometrics: A I've talked to two of my letter recommenders and they said doing research would help for my chances for admission. And now, I've been working on finding research assistantship opportunities both in the US and in my home country. My question is, do you have any suggestions on how could I remedy my subpar grades in those core courses? Would be doing research help for admission much? Also, I'm planning to apply not only to PhD Economics, but also to PhD in Agricultural and Applied Economics. What do you think are my chances? Thank you all! Please stay safe and healthy!
  2. Hello all, I just graduated from an undergrad double majoring in Econ and Math from a Top 25 school, and am planning to do a 1 (or 2 year) RA at a Top 10 Econ school that I was accepted to starting this summer. I took a non econ/math gen ed this semester, and turns out I got an F (talking to other students, the professor was very unfair, and plan on talking to the professor and try to raise it up at least to a C, but no guarantee since some professors are very persistent). My overall GPA is around 3.6 (with three Ws in non econ-related courses), and my major GPA (Econ, Math) is around 3.7. I've struggled initially with math (including a C+ on Real Analysis #1), but improved in advanced courses - re-took Real Analysis #1 got an A, got A's in Real Analysis #2, General Topology (grad-level), Intro to Measure Theory (grad-level), Abstract Algebra, proof-based Linear Algebra, Real Analysis (grad-level), Stochastic Processes (grad-level, stats course). Econ courses - mix of As and Bs. I was told that I have an extensive research experience, and plan on taking PhD Micro and PhD Econometrics during my predoctoral RA. My advisor thinks that it is highly possible for me to get As in them, which I will try my best in. And if I do, my advisor thought I would have a shot at a Top 10 school. But this was before this F came out, and now it's worrying me. How much of an impact could it have on my application, based on my background so far? Your thoughts will be appreciated, thanks!
  3. Hi everyone, I'd like to know what sort of program could I get into given my profile? Can I have a shot at top 30 US or should I look to do a Masters first, also have your say on whether that'll even add value to my app? Type of Undergrad: Asian, one of the top Unis in my country - around 400 QS worldwide tho :/ Undergrad GPA: 3.81 GRE: 164V/164Q/4.5 Math Courses: Calculus 1 (which is like the American Calc 1 & 2 both) - B+, Calculus 2 (which is Calc 3) - A, Probability - A, Intro to Formal Math (proof-writing course) - currently enrolled, Operations Research - A, Statistics - A, Linear Algebra with diff eqn - A, Math for Economists - A, Analysis-1 - taking next semester. Econ courses: Grad-level Macro - A, Grad-level Poverty course - currently enrolled, Econometrics - A-, Game Theory - A+, Grad-level Micro - plan on taking next semester. 9 other Econ courses with average Econ GPA 3.88 Language Tests: Scheduled for Jan '19. Research Experience: RA at my Uni since March, Research Intern for 3 months at a project headed by an NYU Steinhardt professor, Research Intern for 3 months at World Bank, preparing my senior thesis right now, doing another paper as part of the Poverty course (publishable - according to the professor), 4 other papers as part of coursework Teaching Experience: TA'd Econ courses for 3 semesters. Letters of Rec: 2 solid ones, may stress if more are needed Personal Statement + Research Proposal: in the process of writing both Research Interests:Behavioural and Experimental Economics. I'd appreciate any advice, long or short, I receive from you lovely folk. If you'd like me to add something, let me know. Thanks
