That is, I did not talk to faculty or answer their questions, after I applied, while they reviewed applications. Rather, before I submitted my application, I had already skyped and emailed and called with several faculty, and I think that, through those conversations, they got what they needed. It worked out great because I felt confident, and in control of those conversations, when I was talking to them as an aspiring applicant rather than as a competing candidate.
