Hollywood restaurant

At present, the Hollywood restaurant has only standard height tables. However, many customers come to watch celebrities who frequent Hollywood & they prefer tall tables in stools because such seating would afford better view of the celebrities. However, dinners seated on stools typically do not stay as long as diners seated on standard height tables. Therefore, if the Hollywood restaurant replaced some of its seating with higher tables and stools, its profits would increase.

The statement is vulnerable to criticism in that it gives reason to believe that it is likely that:

(a) Some celebrities come to Hollywood restaurant to be seen and so might choose to sit at tall tables if they are available

(b) The price of meals ordered by celebrities dining at Hollywood restaurant compensates for longer time, if any, that they spend lingering over their meals

© A customer of the Hollywood restaurant who would choose to sit at a tall table would be an exception to the generatlisation about lingering

(d) A restaurant's customer who spends less time at their meal typically orders less expensive meals than those who remain at their meals longer

(e) With enough tall tables to accommodate all Hollywood restaurant's customers interested in such seating, there would be no view except of other tall tables

OA is C. This is a GMATPrep question.

LSR, can you provide your explanations plz?

Premise 1: Customers who come to Hollywood restaurant would prefer tall tables and stools, because it affords a better view of celebrities.

Premise 2: There is a higher customer turn-over with customers seated on stools.

General assumption: Higher customer turn-over leads to higher profit.

This is a general assumption that does not relate to Hollywood restaurant in particular, but to all restaurants.

Conclusion: Hollywood restaurant will increase its profit by including some tall tables and stools.

Since customers at Hollywood restaurant prefer tall tables and stools for a different reason than do cutomers at other restaurants, there is a strong basis to believe that they would not follow the pattern observed in other restaurants.

  • 1 year later...

some confusion b/w c and D ... I try to explain why D is incorrect response ..

This question asks to find assumption ... premise + assumption = conclusion

conclusion : Therefore, if the Hollywood restaurant replaced some of its seating with higher tables and stools, its profits would increase

premise ;dinners seated on stools typically do not stay as long as diners seated on standard height tables (watch for 'however' ..signals contrast)

© A customer of the Hollywood restaurant who would choose to sit at a tall table would be an exception to the generatlisation about lingering ..correct response ...customer who sits on stools spends less time so if a specific customer takes more time then it is exception ...thus author protects the conclusion/argument

(d) A restaurant's customer who spends less time at their meal typically orders less expensive meals than those who remain at their meals longer ... if this option is true then conclusion can't be inferred correctly... if the customer who spends less time order less expensive food then even though there could be more customers over all, the revenue /profit may not necessarily increase .. .

I am not very sure that i understood the question , but does it say -

that the person who comes to the Hollywood res. woule be an excaption to the generaization about lingering or in other words the people who come to the hollywood restrant would also come to eat else than only sit on the tall tables for some time (as in the case with other resturants). Ans if this is the case then the peope would not spend a good amount of money(because the passage says dinners do not stay for long when seated on tall tables)and hence the profits would go down.

Pls do let me know if i am wrong - thank you.
