  2. I think I am not quite sure about what the question is asking about. I chose the answer (D), because I thought the 'trip wires' should be above the sheet-web, based on the discription 'above the sheet-web are numerous nearly invisible, single-strand ‘trip wires.’ But the answer is (B). Please help me out. Thanks. “ Sheet-web weavers construct horizontal webs that have the consistency of fine gauze, soft and smooth to the touch. Sheet-webs are generally found lower to the ground among grasses or twigs. The sheet-web itself resembles a small trampoline. Above the sheet-web are numerous nearly invisible, single-strand ‘trip wires.’ A low-flying insect will get knocked out of its flight by one of the trip wires and tumble onto the platform below. Though the sheet-web is not sticky enough to hold the prey, the spider scurries out of hiding and seizes its prize while the dazed bug is scrambling to its feet.” [Question] It can be inferred from the passage that the trip wire used by sheet-web weavers is A) at ground level B) below the sheet-web C) even with the sheet-web D) above the sheet-web

  7. I think it is a good essay. But if you have add more in the conclusion like summing up your reasons, it would nice. Following below is my suggestion. Do marks encourage students to study? Although many people negate the role of marks in a student's study process, I believe that marks are among the most important motives that encourage students to study. Firstly, marks are the crucial standard to show a student's capability. In almost cases, the chance to get admission from a university of a student who has high GPA is bigger than the others. Therefore if a student wants to study in a high quality university in order to warrant for his future life, he will have to study diligently to , (strive)striving for good marks. This means marks help students study harder. Secondly, marks create competitive environment in class. Often students study harder if they have a target such as their friends (to compete for grades). Without marks, there will be nothing to evaluate students, (also) or to show who is better than whom. and also students cannot set a target to try.( confused. Is it easier for students to evaluate themselves?) Consequently, marks are needed to stimulate students to study. Lastly, marks help students' parents know how well their children are doing at school. If a student does not study hard, it often reflects in low marks. Through these marks, his parents will find a solution to the problem such as preventing him from many distracting things like TV or games in time and (make) making him concentrate on his study more. Accordingly, marks encourage students to study indirectly. Basing on these reasons, I think there is no doubt that marks encourage students to study.
  8. Topic 66. Do you agree or disagree with the following statement? Classmates are a more important influence than parents on a child’s success in school. Use specific reasons and examples to support your answer. A child’s success in school may depend on several factors, such as good teacher, more extra-curricular activities, or better school educational program. In my opinion, I disagree that classmates are a more important influence than parents on a child’s success in school. Good parents, I believe, is the main reason for a child’s success in school, due to the long period of a child staying at home with their parents, parents’ attention on their child’s homework, and the desire of a child be praised by their parents. First, I believe good parents influence the most in good performance of a child at school, because a child usually spends most of his time at home than at school. Usually, a kid has a shorter time at school, and longer time at home. As a result, a child is more likely to have chances to talk with his parents than his classmates. Besides, a kid loves to imitate, so learning his father’s speech or mimic mother’s tone is likely to happen, as well as reading books. Second, I believe that a child’s successful schoolwork may affect by their parents the most. Many parents may be more nervous then the child himself in the first day of school. Before school, parents are likely to teach their kid ABC or numbers. Besides, unlike classmates, most parents feel respond for their kid’s performance at school, and hope to see higher grades at his academic work. They may ask about his schoolwork, and sometimes even force him to study harder by accompanying reading with him. Classmates, on the other hand, are good company, but not good teacher, for children usually lack self-control most of the time. Most importantly, it is parents, not classmates, that play an important role in a child’s heart. A child may always want to receive his parents’ affection by praising them all the time. Hence, when a child receives praises from his parents about his well-done schoolwork, he is more likely to do it better the next time. In conclusion, I disagree that a child’s classmates influence more than his parents on his good performance at school. I believe that good parenting is more influential for a child’s success in school, for a child usually spend most of his time with his parents, he is likely to receive attention of his schoolwork by his parents, and most importantly a child desires to be praised by his father or mother.

  14. Dear all, I felt rerely embarrassed last time for my post. I have a hard time writing an essay in just 30 min. I sincerely wish someone may give me suggestion. #65 Should a city try to preserve its old, historic buildings or destroy them and replace them with modern buildings? Use specific reasons and examples to support your opinion. Old, historic buildings may reflect our past whether honorable or sympathetic. Some old buildings are remained as to commemorate the country's early heroes. In my opinion, historic buildings should be preserve rather than destroy, because it functions as vivid historical book, helps us to cherish our present life more, and more significantly it enable the country to grain more incomes. First of all, an old, historic building is a piece of history. People may learn more through the architectural heritage by observing its inner structure and decoration, as well as its exterior construction. From the building itself, for example, it tells us about the way people in the early time used to fight with enemies. Likely, the Great Wall gives an example of the way old Chin dynasty used to prevent intruders. In addition, the elaborated old Imperial Palace in China also reveals the luxurious live of old Chinese emperors. Therefore, as long as visitors walking into this relic, tourists are expectably to feel like going back to the early time as by time machine and hear the conversation of people in the history. Secondly, the more people know about their history through these historic building, the more they learn to cherish their present life. Life in the early time is not always as comfortable as today. Many heroes had fought for freedom and life. For instance, people today have a more equal right to live than in the past. Therefore, through the cells in a small island near Taiwan, people learn that many intellectuals had sacrifice to our nowadays human rights. Last, old, historic buildings are not always useless. These buildings are in fact more attractive than modern buildings. Hence, while more tourists come to visit these building, a country may flow in more revenue. In conclusion, modern buildings should not replace historic building in a city, even though these old building seem too old to use. In my viewpoint, they are more precious, for they are part of history, they teach us to cherish our life, and also they help a country to earn more.
  15. I am glad to receive recommendation, because I am going to have the TOEFL exam. Thank you very much.:) #65 Should a city try to preserve its old, historic buildings or destroy them and replace them with modern buildings? Use specific reasons and examples to support your opinion. Most old, historic buildings in a city nowadays have been destroyed. But for some country there are still many of these architectural heritages. In my opinion, I believe that old, historic buildings should not be replaced with modern buildings, because of education purpose, gaining country more incomes, and most importantly they represent our city. First of all, historic buildings in a city may show us different architects in certain ages. It is a useful education material to teach us about our past. Likely, we then know how we used to dwell in the old society. In addition, we may assume what old society is alike. Moreover, historic buildings may also reveal the trend of art in the past. We may learn when people started to build houses mimicking those buildings of Europe and what kind of decoration is being used in the building. Second, people can also well use those historic buildings to gain more incomes, if they are preserved as tourist sites. Because of fewer and fewer old, historic buildings in the world, people today are more please to visit these rare antic buildings. Thus, more and more incomes may flow into our country as well. Most importantly, despite they are precious to visitors, these antic buildings are symbols of a city. They represent our past and our identification. For example, the old train station in Taichung, Taiwan, of which was built by Japanese in the past, gives us a view our diversity culture. In conclusion, architectural heritages should be preserved rather than destroy, for they are good educational materials, valuable tourist sites, and important landmarks of a city.

  17. Dear LouisLin, I am sorry that I did not read carefully last time, because it is my first time to use it. Thank you very much for your suggestion. :)
  18. Dear Santana, This is my suggestion, and I may not be 100% perfect. So, just take it as an advice. Anyways, I highly recomend you to be more careful to the plural and singular nouns. Upon to the question that which is better , living in places that have the same weather or living in areas where the weather changes several times , people have different opinions about it. In my country, we live have four seasons. I like four seasons in a year, so I prefer to live in a changing climate. There are many reasons to support my viewpoint. To begin with, the main reason for my choosing is that I find pleasure in every season . In winter, I enjoy playing with guelder rose, meeting in front of the fireplace or looking at snow. Moreover, in summer, I like swimming or sunbathing. If I lived in places where I could not swim or there is no sunshine, I would have a very dull life and would not be as pleasure as now. Next, another reason why I would usually prefer to live in a changing climate is that same climate may cause depression over people. For instance, when climate is winter all year and people not see sun all year,(confused, need to change) it may cause stress and depression above people. Besides, people have to use very much energy to warm up and to light up their house. Thus, this will be a burden to the economy of a country. To sum up, people make different activities which are enjoyable in different seasons or they change themselves every season to avoid stress . All in all, in my opinion every seasons has its advantages and I like to have a changing climate all year long.
  19. Dear LouisLin, Thank you very much. I am very glad to hear from your reply. :) But, if you are available, I still hope to receive any recommendation from you. Anyways, thanks so much for your reply.
  20. Dear all, It is my first time to post an essay, and I am very pleased to meet everyone here. I hope anyone who read this essay may help me improve my writing. I will be very grateful to receive your any replay. Thank you very much.:) # 088 Do you agree or disagree with the following statement? Telephones and email have made communication between people less personal. Use specific reasons and examples to support your opinion. Thanks to the technology, people nowadays may have several different ways to communicate with others, such as Internet, and cellular phone. However, in spite of these quick and easy ways to reach a person, I agree that modern techniques like telephones and email have made contact between people impersonal. First of all, because of the convenient of telephones and email, the communication among modern people today is almost superficial. While hurrying to work, or busying on money making, people nowadays usually do not spend their extra time to hold a face-to-face talk with their friends or parents, for example. In order to save time, people often tend to send an email or make a phone call to people whom they concerned. Secondly, I believe telephones and email are less emotional, for people sometimes get the wrong expression easily. People cannot express their facial expressions, or body language to show how they feel. Instead, their feelings are showed through computer language, which often lead to a misunderstanding. Likely, without face-to-face talk, friends sometimes confuse friendship with love. Also, through the telephone, it may be hard to tell whether your friends are sad or delightful by their tones. Sometimes, when people are extremely angry they may express their feeling sarcastically, but you may think they are just joking. Last but not least, telephones and email have made people isolated. Although more and more people are holding a cellular phone on hand, seldom of them have no trouble to communicate face-to-face. People are getting used to telephones and email, and thus many of them may have problems to express their feelings without these devices. In addition, they may find it hard to hold an informal conversation with others. They may afraid of talking to a person, but not a telephone or a computer. To sum up, I strongly agree that telephones and email have made communication between people less personal. While telephones and email do make people to communicate much easier, communication today are much superficial and often confused. Also modern people nowadays are much more isolated than before. Therefore, I believe nothing can replace our nature way of communication, face-to-face talk.
