Answer should be D (I think you mistyped S) Here the younger and the older people refer are specific. Younger and older is more general and represents workers. Others are not parallel.

C/D/E Are straight out. Agree with Philospher Also in A 'It is hoped' is non restrictive and the sentence makes sense without it.

C is correct here. It follows the construction If..... Were. Regardless of the subject(singular/plural)

Bayou, Reindeer and Caribou are mass nouns and hence should be singular. Do you say they are plural because "and" makes them plural or you have another reason to say so.
